Top 5 Fantasy Webnovel Series I Want To Read!

Ойын-сауық

Hi everyone! In today's video, I will let you know the top 5 fantasy web novel series I want to read. Eventually anyway. So yes, unlike usual, all the series listed today will be web novels. If you have been following my channel this year, you might know my high enjoyment and positive impression with Mother of Learning by nobody103. Reading that series finalized my decision to read more web novels. I am NOT well-versed in web novels. But the five series I will talk about today have certainly caught my interest, and sooner or later, I will read them. But if you have read any of these series, let me know your thoughts! And feel free to give me more suggestions on amazing web novels to read.
One important thing, you can read all of the series I mention today officially for FREE on the series' respective websites. I'm going to link them below!

1:53 Zenith of Sorcery by nobody103
4:27 Worm by John McCrae or Wildbow
6:54 Lord of the Mysteries by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving

    Lord of the Mysteries is, at least among webnovels, one of the greatest examples of setup-payoff. Things you might consider trivial and small when reading, often end up cooking in the background for a while, leading to huge events. The thing I immediately think of when remembering LOTM is the feeling of "things clicking into place". The truth is basically laid out before you, yet you're never able to connect the dots before the grand reveal. Even things you might think would be lost in translation, like hidden meanings, analogies, proverbs, jokes etc. somehow still make sense and fit in. I'm almost certain that the translator may be an award-winning author himself.

    So wonderful to hear that! I always love reading something with this kind of meticulous setup and foreshadowing. It makes rereading a great series more satisfying, too, and I'm glad Lord of the Mysteries tick the boxes. :)

    I always thought that the first 100 chapters of LoTM were super solid and some of the best in the whole saga. The reveal about the greater powers at plays, the character arcs, etc. were super impactful. The first 20 ish chapters do a lot of world building though. But I think one of LoTM's greatest strengths is that a lot of the details that it constructs end up being part of major plot points.

    Practical Guide to Evil is really good, but that premise is so vague! It's also in a weird state right now because it is being rewritten/rereleased on a mobile only platform with microtransactions. Hopefully in a few years it will be on a more friendly platform in a final version.

    @@PetrikLeo The original version is still available for free (for now at least), but the company behind Webtoons made a commercial web serial service called Yonder and Practical Guide to Evil is being re-released on there in a heavily revised form. Accessing chapters involves microtransactions, though I think you get a free chapter every week or something. I wasn't interested in using the platform so I don't know the full economics.

    I've read the first volume of The Wandering Inn and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I listened to it on audio and the narrator is incredibly talented (and the plot is easy to follow on audio). I think it took me three weeks to finish lol. I picked it up during Audible's huge sale last fall. I'm hoping they have it again this year because it seemed like everything was one sale. Lord of the Mysteries has an official translation, though It's not really a good translation. It's far from the level of top translated work like 3 body problems, but it's more than just readable. I have read the series completely, and it's fully worth it. It's like many ideas jumbled together to make a coherent story, which can be like an urban fantasy at times, steampunk, pirate adventure, or an epic scale war. Fair warning: there's too much info dumping through conversation, though some of them are done brilliantly...

  • @PetrikLeo

    @PetrikLeo

    11 ай бұрын

    Oh I see! Thank you for your input! I don't mind info dump as long that they're done nicely. But yeah, the quality of translation is what I'm afraid of here. Nothing wrong with fan translation, but just need to hear from someone who has read it that they're good! I mean, professional translation doesn't guarantee it's good, too. I read the first two books in Witcher, for example, and many Polish readers agree the English translation doesn't do justice to the original prose.

A Practical Guide to Evil is the highest up my personal TBR from this video as I'm also scared of Wandering Inn's word count... Hi Petrik! I have read both Worm and Wandering Inn (well only half of it). Worm was my first web serial, it has a really interesting structure bc, as what happens with TWI, the first arc is much weaker than the rest and you can really see the author finding their style throughout the series. The ending arcs are also much weaker but it peaks super hard around the middle part. TWI however is now my 2nd favorite fantasy series behind malazan. It's both addictive and funny while also being terrifying and dramatic. Characters get so much development and the worldbuilfing is unmatched. I really hope you give it a try! But Beware that Volume 1 starts off quite weak even if by the end I came to love it.

    I dont have words for how just so expertly well done Worm is, the intricate world building, powerful themes, and of course epic battles makes for one of the most engaging stories I have ever come across. If I can offer a tip although EXTREMELY debatable please do not be afraid to look up characters abilites, and read Wildbows statements on whats going on in the background I found it makes for a much more intriguing story when I knew how deep it truly went and how large this universe really is, others will tell you just read it and take it at face value, but I truly believe having looked into the wiki and studying shards a little bit before reading that it made for more of a sci fi fantasy series instead of just another comic book but in word form. Hope you enjoy it and I can not wait to see what you think of it! I hope it inspires other booktubers to pick it up, once it becomes mainstream I believe it has the potential to be a heavy hitter in the entertainment industry. Comics, movies, books, spin offs ect.

    I'd also recommend Worth the Candle! It's getting published on kindle/audible currently. It's completed, and the author has a few other web serials. The premise is that a Dungeon Master who is struggling with depression after a close friend died is pulled into a world based on all his own campaigns. I won't spoil anything, but like Worm it's staggering how many unique ideas and trope reversals that the author comes up with. It was my gateway into Dnd related things so I'd say it's friendly to newcomers.

    Web novels have an interesting landscape. I really want to read The Wandering Inn and Forge of Destiny the most. I highly recommend All the Skills and one called Super Supportive. One of deck building based, like yugioh or hearthstone, and the other is a superhero story. There’s also a Xianxia one called Reverend Insanity. Alas, if only I could read fast enough to get through them all!

    Patrik , I suggest that if you want to read wandering inn, you need to abondon the mentality of catching up with the series , it is not meant to be consumed in that way, I and most of the community around wandering inn treat it as a weekly read that you take out time once or twice a week to enjoy the work that the author pirate aba have created. Infact most of the community is in catchup mode with the series given pirate on average write 50k words a week(excluding their break weeks). Moreover most of the chapters are nice stopping points. Sure there are character arc that spans multiple volume and there is traditional book structure to the volumes like in traditional publishing, but if you try to read wandering inn in that way you may spoil your enjoyment as it spoiled mine enjoyment in my first read through, because in the hurry of catching up I overlooked so many moment that surfaced back around way later in the series. Try to give it a commitment of 10-20 k a week , and post read through of inpression of the bunch of chs you read weekly or when you think a character arc is complete or whatever suits you, there is not hard and fast rule of reviewing only yill bookend in the webnovel reviewing space, just give your audience warning that yiur discussion is limited to these particular group of chs and they will respect it. Wandering inn community believes in the motto of journey before destination. Hope you embark on the journey and enjoy it. P.S. Website version is the best way to experience the series(through it is also available on kindle), you can use audio book fm book two onwards dor superior experience. Try to read upto ch 1.20 before deciding wether to DNF the series as the start is intentionally slow and small.

    For TWI, do yourself a favor and just focus on the official published work on kindle/audiobook. The fact is, online you won’t be able to catch up. The author writes faster than most people can read and unless you are focused ONLY on that you won’t be able to do it. So my advice for going into that series is to not even think about whatever is online just focus on what has been published (pretend the online stuff doesn’t exist basically lol) . It won’t seem so overwhelming. And this goes for anyone that wants to get into the series. Trust me, mentally it’s the better path. Also I think the official work count is above 14 million words now? Or at least close to it.

  • @PetrikLeo

    @PetrikLeo

    I think this is pretty good advice. The thing about the word count of Wandering Inn is that it really feels like this is the kind of series I have to dedicate all my time to. Or at the very least, I think if I read this, I have to read it with the mindset I won't be able to finish it. The author write insanely fast, and as far as I know, the series is only about a third finished. That means the entire series will be 30 million words long if that's the case.

    I'll add to the voices for Wandering INN. BUT... you have to hear it on audible, as the narrator is probably the best I've come across. Amazing at accents, and tries to give every character their own unique voice, extremely versatile. The story itself is fairly surprising at times too. It's often cited as slice of life, so a lot of the darker and more violent aspects actually shocked me, and they happen fairly early on.

The web version utilizes very standard web features that would be too expensive or impossible to do on print/Kindle/audio in order to add... a little something extra. It's never _required_, but these features do add some flavor that you'd miss out on in other formats!

    I've read The Wandering Inn Book 1 on their website and now I'm reading it again since Pirateaba decided to give it a huge make-over (both versions to be found on the website!). If this book is generally considered to be the weakest of the series I'm surely in for an experience of a lifetime regarding the rest of the series. Because, dear Petrik, the style of writing is like a breeze of fresh air. My advise to you is to start your reading adventure with this series. Don't look in awe at that mountain of 11,000,000+ words but know that book 1 has the lowest word count (343,097 words). On top of that it's not just the number of words but foremost the style of writing that is important. It's not that you have to focus on texts of the likes of Tolkien or Robert Jordan. Pirateaba in my opinion might be the most underrated storyteller of our generation. You will not read his books, you will devour them. Below I read a criticism that some of his main characters are annoying. Well, kudos to the author then because these characters were MEANT to be annoying. To make a long story short: I'm pretty much convinced that you could read Book 1 in no more than 2 weeks. After that you could simply build in a pause but I'm already curious if you would want to do that. Kind regards from the Dutch Mountains.

    So, I've read a number of web novels but not typically the kind you've mentioned here (I like some shoujo isekai stories where she's a villain who reforms the character and the story). But I did read Mother of Learning and loved it. I also read part of some version of The Wandering Inn (there are several floating around) and thought it was horribly written, so much so that I did not finish it. Now, maybe it gets better. Maybe there's an edited version out there? The one I read was extremely repetitious and had awful writing, like where the author skipped many important events, or just told about them casually afterwards when you would have wanted to see them. I do not recommend it unless there's an edited version. Oh, and it's unrelated to this video but I'm re-reading The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers which I wanted to recommend to you because it is one of the rare time travel fantasies out there, and it's considered a fantasy masterwork. Hi Petrik, I have followed you for some time and am very excited to see this video bringing awareness to webnovels. I have read all the webnovels on this list, most of the other popular webnovels, and pretty much every popular traditional fantasy series out there and I can definitively say the wandering inn is the greatest novel I've ever read in more ways than one. It is "great" as in it is consistently high quality with ridiculous amounts of output from the author, and "great" in the sense the scope of the setting is huge, and you come to know a whole universe intimately, with a wide range of different species cultures, characters, and continents, and there is nothing else quite like it. The wandering inn is a series full of big moments and quiet moments, and the author does an excellent job of balancing slice of life elements while moving character and plot progression forward. The really epic moments imo can surpass some of the epic moments from stormlight archive, and it is especially cool when plot lines and characters converge. There are also many mysteries built into the worldbuilding and it is very satisfying for the characters to slowly uncover them. As others have mentioned, many of the chapters complete their own mini arcs, although some mini arcs can last for 3 chapters, so it is not necessary to read whole volumes at a time. However I found myself so interested I read nothing but TWI for 2 months straight to catch up. A practical guide to evil is also one of my favorites and I think does somethings better than any fantasy I've read, and has extremely strong characterizatios and a fascinating magic system. I think it can be very dense and has some filler-esque elements that bog it down at times which can make it hard to binge through however. The ending is incredible though and wraps the story up beautifully. Worm is also great and is a webnovel classic, fun read with constant escalation and an explosive finish. Lord of the mysteries I think is better than most asian webnovels out there, but I found myself bored at some point and do not think it holds up to the other popular webnovels.

It's not incorrect but it's clear that translator had to figure it all out yet at that point. After that is great tho. No complaints. Many people consider first arc too slow and exposition heavy but that doesn't mean it's bloated. I highly recommend Shadow Slave web novel it's amazing. The prose and dialogue of Shadow Slave is pretty terrible but the story and characters and progression are all amazing. It has about 1000 chapters currently but the chapters aren't very long it took me about a week to read. I see a lot of people recommending Lord of the Mysteries and I tried to read LoTM and got to chapter 150 but don't really see the hype maybe I need to read farther but 150 is already pretty far. Maybe it was also because the site I have been reading on has terrible translation I haven't read Zenith of Sorcery but I thought it had barely any content yet, I think you should wait until there are more chapters before reading that one. I have been meaning to read Worm for a while heard great things about it.

I would even say that LOM is worst from those 3 because of the translation. Dialogs at the begining might feel a little weird because at the start before MC make some friends,MC is distrastfull introvert. But you read like 15% of released chapters so I would like to encourage you to continue reading, around chapters 250 MC have some friends who he starts trusting a little and there is also some funny friendly banter, but our MC stays the same socialy akward doofus

    The series on your list are great but here is a series I really liked and think that it is on par with lotm and ri(all the people I have talked to who have read it think the same) It is a true hidden gem and a masterpiece. It's name is KINGDOM'S BLOODLINE. If LOTM is progression fantasy and mystery, RI is progression fantasy with political factors then KINGDOM'S BLOODLINE is more heavily on politics but the very unique power system, world building and plot make it no less than the above mentioned novels. Mc is realistically smart, villain is realistically smart, hell every single person in the story is so smart that it has some of the best schemes and mysteries that it may leave some schemes from LOTM and RI to dust. One Webnovel I would recommend is the perfect run which is the second highest rated web novel after mother of learning on royal road and is about 60% the length. It is also a time travel story but set in post apocalypse Europe with the main focus on Italy and similar to worm is also a superhero story. It’s also quite funny with a lot of pop culture references to stuff like jojos(manga) for example. The synopsis is : Ryan "Quicksave" Romano is an eccentric adventurer with a strange power: he can create a save-point in time and redo his life whenever he dies. Arriving in New Rome, the glitzy capital of sin of a rebuilding Europe, he finds the city torn between mega-corporations, sponsored heroes, superpowered criminals, and true monsters. It's a time of chaos, where potions can grant the power to rule the world and dangers lurk everywhere. Ryan only sees different routes; and from Hero to Villain, he has to try them all. Only then will he achieve his perfect ending... no matter how many loops it takes. There is 3 main arcs and I do think the first is the weakest but I find it really hard to choose between the last 2 as I think the 2nd is the most consistent while the 3rd has the best moments and is a great ending and send off to the characters.

    I just started reading LOTM last night. So far, Mother of Learning, Shadow Slave, The Wandering Inn and The Legendary Mechanic have been my favorites. The Legendary Mechanic has a bit of a nationalist viewpoint and it sometimes gets to the point where it's annoying how they view all non-chinese players as hostile. But it is the only isekai webnovel where the reason for getting isekai'd makes perfect sense (in the context of the story), and the plot and world building are really good.

TBH, I thought I was done with all those generic copy/paste isekai stories too, until I discovered the wandering inn, the legendary mechanic and mushoku tensei. TWI focuses more on the characters, TLM focuses more on the plot and mushoku tensei, both. They all have excellent world building. For the power system, TWI and mushoku tensei are better. Just because you know magic, doesn't make you op. One stray arrow and you still die.

    It's usually a process of publication. Webnovels = Each chapter is posted (most of the time for free) in a timely fashion on their chosen website. This means more rapid publishing, and quite likely less editing. The novel is as you know, the whole book is written and edited first before being published. :)

    Instead of reading Wandering Inn you should read Shadow Slave(even if it isnt finished yet). I did read wandering inn for a long time stoped somewhere in book 6, and i think it isnt good fit for you , because its more quantity then quality. Dont take me wrong is still really good but there are like 20 charakters who recive a lot of screen time ,advantage is everyone will find his favourite character for sure (for me its Pisces), because they are incredibly diverse and well writen , but on other hand you will have to chew throu a lot of chapters about charakters you dont care about to get back to your favourite one (doesnt help that most main character is kind of clules gulible girl , you have to just switch off your brain . especialy book 1). But if you have a LOT of free time it is worth it in the end On other hand Shadow Slave is more action packed , more fights, I would even say something like shounen novel . Also if you read first chapter you will not be able to stop
