Lord. No matter how big a ship is, when it's scaled to the ocean, it's just a little toy floating on the water, at the mercy of the elements.

This is one of the reasons cruises have never appealed to me. The others are small rooms and the proximity of so many people. I went to Bermuda and watched a cruise ship unload. Oh my goodness there were so many people. I preferred sitting on the patio of this beautiful bread and breakfast on the bay and watching the cruise ship pass me by. I had my own beautiful gorgeous room with the pool right outside my door. It was wonderful. No thank you to cruises.

Edit: measures

The most amazing thing is that most of these ships are completely resistant to storms of this magnitude. In fact, the only recent cruise sinking indirectly caused by a storm was that of the MTS Oceanos, a small and rickety ship that was inherently insafe already.

We were caught in Hurricane Wilma while on a Carnival ship. It was super windy and they of course shut down all the decks, but I honestly didn’t find much choppier than I have at times experienced on cruise ships without a storm at sea. What was crazy though was when we got back to port in Miami, devastation was everywhere and many people’s cars had been damaged. Ours was fine however we had to drive over an hour before we could find an open station to get gas to get home.

So let me get this straight, some passengers couldn't handle the rough ride, but are going to be strapping themselves to the end of a rope that's dangling from a helicopter down to the ship in rough seas, and will dangle from the end of that rope in the rough seas, as they are pulled up several stories to a shaky helicopter, and that seems like a better idea than staying on the ship?!

The largest cruise ship at the moment is the Symphony of the Seas It can hold 6680 passengers plus 2200 crew - Total 8880 But it only has18 lifeboats [capacity 370 each - 18 x 370 = 6660] Safety trials have been carried out in the calm waters of a Mediterranean harbour not in a gale at sea, like in these videos. If a cruise ship is listing, the lifeboats on one side are in the water but on the other side they cannot be launched -so halving the number of available lifeboats. This is a disaster just waiting to happen. Why didn't they just name it TITANIC II

I’m going on it next year and I call tell you, the size it is there is NO WAY it could sink unless we go in the middle of a hurricane with 300+kph winds. I’ve been in 90+kph winds on the Freedom and all it did was sway like 17 degrees. And besides, the symphony is so large that rescue teams would show up before it was all the way under.

"NO WAY IT COULD SINK" ??????? Didn't they say that about another ship in 1912 ?? I admire your optimism "It's so large rescue teams would turn up before it was all the way under" You do realise that "rescue teams" would need the capacity for nearly 9000 people, so it would need to be another ship travelling at 20mph. Still, I suppose you can tread water for a few hours, in freezing cold water.

Your logic is flawed here. There are only hundreds of cruise ships in the world. There are millions of cars. There have been 79 fires and power outages on cruise ships. 16 ships have sunk out of those hundreds. So statistically speaking you're more likely to experience various malfunctions, accidents on a cruise ship then inside a motor vehicle.

Sailing is one of the most beautiful and freeing things in this world. The ocean is the only place that's the same as it was in the 1600s exc. Nature is beautiful and must be respected, with a good captain you have nothing to worry about. Just enjoy the ride. Ps alot of old people retire and live on a sailboat and sail the world with no issues. Even at 80 years old lol

When a ship goes down like that, you have to swim away from it before it goes down. The bubbles and froth in the water will not support swimmers and they go down too. Swim away and roll over on your back with just your mouth out of the water. slowly peddle your feet as like riding a bicycle. Tread water like that in a relaxed mode. Use your clothing to capture air and help you float.

Ships nowadays are also equipped with modern radar technology, making avoiding smaller storms pretty darn easy. In all honesty, you're not going to be likely sailing across the world anymore, most of these trips will be near coasts, making a port stop quite easy. Imagine what people had to go through back in the day when they sailed on wooden ships with leaks.

Everybody is saying how they “won’t go on a cruise after watching this video”. These things don’t happen often. More often then not, the ship will be in rough waves and stay unaffected by them. The one thing in common with these clips is that the waves where unusually large. Most of the time the wave won’t be over 8” or so. Don’t let these thing discourage you from cruising.

Modern ship design has a lot to do with the rough ride in stormy seas. A passenger ship like the Normande, or Queen Mary or QE2 would by virtue of their hull design ride rough seas much better. The cruse ships should not even think of the North Atlantic.
