TOP 5 BUDGET IEM's of 2019 (universal fit in ear monitors)

I have a NEW updated list for 2020 here!!! • Best Budget IEM's 2020...
I've tried out countless in ear monitors since my first video last fall, and I've come up with this list of the top 5 IEM's available right now. These are chosen from the perspective of the working musician and audio engineer, not from a music listening enjoyment perspective. Here we are looking for true reference earphones that have a good flat frequency response so that we get the truest representation of the sound source as possible. If you are just looking for good headphones to enjoy listening to music, look elsewhere. These are truly reference monitors for musicians and sound technicians.
These are the IEM's I reviewed in this video as well as the coupon codes to save a little extra dough:

Lots of skeptics are saying that these are not true neutral reference monitors, but my ears tell me otherwise, so I did some research. I posted on my Facebook and Instagram a picture of the frequency response graphs of the KZ ZSN PRO vs the Shure se215. My ears told me the ZSN pro was more neutral, and the graphs confirm it. Plus, you know, they cost 1/4 the price...check it out and see for yourself: instagram.com/p/Bx6SYKHFps8/?igshid=l92fl40mufjx

Guns and Guitars Can you give the specific product of the cable you use? I have in ears with no mic, but when pushing the cable all the way in, sound only comes out of 1 ear. I’m guessing it’s a TRS cable and not stereo like I want.

I've been using Shure 215s for a couple of years and have been very happy with them, but recently had a problem with the cable so ordered a new one. Having just seen this review, on a whim, I also ordered a pair of the ZSN Pros which I got for £17, just as a backup. Have to say I had no great expectations but for the price I thought why not. They came today and they look really blocky so my expectations went even further down. But when I tried them, WOW, they're not the same standard as my Shure's, they're better!! Slightly louder but just as pure, none of the highs and lows have been lost and they have great separation. I love them. Slight downside is they felt less comfy in the ear than the Shure's but after a few minutes I didn't notice the discomfort and after wearing them for a couple of hours I feel Shure (sorry) that I'll be able to use them on a regular basis. If these are number 5 on the list the number one's must be fantastic. So a big thank you for the heads up,

For live in-ear monitoring, I've personally found that the KZ AS10s are by far the best; very loud, very clear, and enough bottom end without feeling overly bass-boosted. And yes, foam tips or correctly fitting silicone tips are THAT IMPORTANT.

For music listening I have also found them to be the best. Epically when it comes to instrument separation. Like you can pick every little detail out in the mix that you would usually miss. Got a pair of KZ ZS10 Pros thinking they may be better, after listening for a while noticed the level of detail was lost. I will say I use these for purely listening to lossless audio on my phone.

Thanks for this mate. I'm also a bass player and lead vocalist and I've owned 3 sets of CCA C16's over the last few years. I'm yet to find anything else that comes close and I'm devastated that they no longer make them and I can no longer buy them. My only issue with them is the cable comes loose from the ear bud quite frequently. I've just purchased the KZ ZAX and the KZ-ZS10 PRO X but I'm yet to try them yet. I'll give them a go at our show tomorrow night. Thanks for taking the time to review these. I have recommended them to so many people who all went and bought them. Years ago I went through 2 sets of Shure 846's, lost the 1st set after 1 show and then replaced them and then yes them until I discovered the CCA's. They costs around 10 times as much as the CCA C16 and I think the CCA's sound way better.

i just got a ZSN Pro, really love the sound. but, i just found many people in my country having problem about this IEM and some of it's brother with similar design. It seems KZ use low quality glue for attaching the metal nozzle to the plastic body, many people had their metal nozzle broke off the plastic body, and rip the BA driver from the cable (the BA driver stick to the metal nozzle).

More BA drivers in reality do not always mean more sound. F.i. though the cca16 and as16 use two balanced armature drivers for the bass frequencies. However the bass frequency extension and impact on the KZ as10 with one Bass B.armature wich I have ordered too and guns & guitars likes too is considered to be a lot better. By most iem users . Besides that the KZ as16 more expensive model is considered to have better functionality than the cheaper sister company replica as hardware goes nearly identical model CCA c16.

I previously bought a pair of ZS3's about nine months ago to use as IEM's after reading reviews on Head-Fi. And I must say I was amazed. I had previously used two different sets of Shure IEM's for over ten years and was absolutely shocked at the difference the (at that time) $15 ZS3's made. Separation and clarity of the various instruments was amazing. I could hear subtleties in the mix which I had never heard before. Folks. Stop listening to internet couch jockeys who have never even heard these. Get a pair and make the comparison yourself. It made such a difference onstage that I actually hated to take them out. I cannot wait to hear what Linsoul's reference pair can do.

The Tin T3 pretty much out perform everything I've owned for a quarter of the cost. I carry my IEM's around a lot so in the end they end up breaking connectors or cables. But flat they are not.. FAR from it.. all KZs (almost all) have V shaped signature, some more than others. That is their trade mark. That being said the ZSN Pro a killer for the price and also great to check your mix for mess in the high range. But dont trust the midrange. It is not flat .. not even close.

I have the MX3 and MX4. I love the fit, I like the fact that they're interchangeable and offer so many extras and options. The memory foams are a requirement as far as I'm cncerned. The 3s do the job they're stated to, they definitely have boosted mids. That being said, I'm a singing electric guitarist, and I absolutely prefer the 4s. While the 3s do punch in the mids, I was missing too much treble. The 4s have what I was looking for. I think the 3s would work great for a lead vocalist. I will admit, I have lost some hearing over the years. I'm your stereotypical "deaf" guitarist. As always, YMMV. But I would recommend spending the extra $50 and getting the MX4.

If your hearing is damaged I would look into IEM's with balanced armatures specifically. Their tech was derived from hearing aids and they produce sound differently than a regular driver. They also isolate better so you don't have to listen as loud. Additionally, many have a more subtle bass response, which means that turning them up won't blow out the low end of your hearing. A lot of the recommendations floating around here have poor mids and strong bass and highs, so if you turn them up to get more mids (essential for most monitoring use) you may be damaging your low and high sensitivity as they will be much louder in comparison. Depending on what range of your hearing is struggling I'd suggest the Shure 425 (mid focus), Sennheiser IE40 (high focus - not great isolation though) or the Shure 215 SPE (special edition - Bass focus) - The 425 and 215 are dynamic driver so they can move a lot of air - the 215 SPE specifically could probably damage one's low-end sensitivity quickly, caution recommended.

@@antiduckable Have you tried them before? They come with several tip sizes in the foam. The Etymotic ER3XR are a good option too so long as modest bass response is OK. The foam tips of both of these can be rolled very small to get into the ear, but having a small canal may mean more pressure on the canal as the foam expands. The Etymotic sits deeper though so that can be a problem. I'd try the 215 or see if you can find some Shure foam tips somewhere so you can see how they compress and expand first hand.

@@ReddenDoom Sorry, I got the terms wrong. I incorrectly used 'ear canal' to describe the part of the ear that IEM's sit in; mine is really small, but I did have the SE215 and I had to force them and it would literally take about 10 minutes before it got quite painful because it felt like my ear was being stretched by the actual driver unit. Definitely going to give that ER3XR a go though! They look perfect and will hopefully sound perfect. Thank you.
