I got my ball python, Ash, when I was 12-ish, and had to leave him at home when I went to college. They had just enacted a no-reptile rule in the dorms after a student's king snake got out and bit the housing director. Figures, right? I'm pleased to say that I now have an apartment, and my noodle-pup is living with me again

Yeah ball pythons are definitely the best choice because you can do something with them holding on to you, most other shakes I’ve held aren’t really that easy, for instance a corn snake will just try to get away from you , very quickly and boas are able to hold on and chill with you as well but there just not as easy to take care of really once at full size ball pythons are kinda a perfect beginner animal and thanks to all the morphs they will always stay relevant in the reptile enthusiast community if you’re willing to spends more money on a high end morph.

Matt Reid, They did, by allowing their child to have a reptile. So if that reptile doesn't do well, the parents are indirectly responsible for it. It also depends on the age of the child, and how responsible the child is. With children under a certain age, you just can't expect them to understand how an animal should be kept correctly without help from their parents.

I do tons of research before getting any pet and so far i'd say i'm doing a good job to keep my pets happy and thriving. I give them the proper diet with a variety of dusted insects, give proper UVB and heating lighting as well as keep the temps and humidity on point. I also give all my pets a bigger enclosure that is recommended as the minimum. I even handle a lot of them daily and work with them. I just subscribed today. But it’s the second or third video I’ve watched of yours. Very good advice. I have read that chameleons are very hard to get their ecosystem just right. And some of the photos of a person’s finger with the tiniest baby standing on just one section, is so intimidating to me. And i would hate if any died because I had them in my house under bad conditions. So many other options! My kids had a Baird’s Rat Snake when they were young. She was a great pet!! We had her 15 years. Very calm, very friendly, ate well, loved hanging around my daughters neck while she played on her computer. They are really great. I am personally getting a baby albino Hudson’s milk snake. He will be here Thursday. He’s on MorphMarket if you want to take a look. Super tiny and so pretty. Or handsome. So I’ve decided to get another one before I’m too old to care for one! Take care. Great channel. I look forward to learning a lot from you.

I have a kingsnake (California king, about 2 years old) and I can definitely confirm that she is super food oriented. She’s bit me once, and it was a feeding response to the finger. They are excellent pets and eat well, but I agree that that would traumatize a kid. I work with reptiles and had worked with kingsnakes prior. I’ve noticed they go through a particularly voracious phase and chill out when they mature. They might be a good second snake for someone-a step up from corn snakes for sure.

I work at a pet store. I see tons of parents getting pets for their kids thinking the care is easy and the kid can take care of it. They don’t want to listen when I or a coworker give them much needed advise. Most people severely underestimate the needs of reptiles. I had to sell a chameleon to a lady and her daughter. They knew the chameleon would need high humidity and ventilation, they already had a reptibreeze cage. I tried to convince them to get a crested gecko because they’re the closest we had. They said they would spray it during the day and it would be fine. Couple months later it died.

I love turtles, used to have a softshell that was my favorite thing ever behind an adult green iguana. You're absolutely right about them being a lot of work and that most kids (and adults) would zone out pretty fast, I was the exception in the house. Nobody else wanted him, but I'd watch him for hours, so he got his food and water changes. I think it's good to get a pet that matches the kid's activity level, personality, and responsibility level; turtles are rarely that pet.

I truly love my bearded dragon, he's a very chill guy and I can trust him with my kid. My leopard gecko is great too, but he is not happy with being handled, very bitey if you try, so no kids get to touch him. He's fun to watch eat, though. He's lightning fast and it cracks my son up. I'd love to add a snake to my collection, but I'm undecided on a king or a corn for the reasons you stated. King's captured my heart when I was a kid but I think getting a corn is the better option, at least until I get more confident with snake care.

Thank You for this! I am a kid but I do a lot of research so I knew NOT to get any types of moniters for my first reptile. I convinced my parents to get me a bearded dragon and he is amazing! he doesn't really like handling too too much but I am handling him everyday to get him used to handling. My parents say I can get a 2nd reptile in a year so what do you think is a good choice? I am thinking of a snake or a skink. Thanks, Henry

Research thoroughly, consider their side and provide counterpoints to their argument. Lastly, accept that reptiles aren't cheap and not everyone wants a dead rodent next to their steaks in the freezer, so you might just have to be patient and wait until you have your own place.

Leopard geckos and other hardy, easy to keep, handleable reptiles are WAY better than something like a Chamaeleon or big snake for kids. in my opinion 11 is the YOUNGEST a kid should be to get a reptile, Well at less without significant help from a parent or older sibling. (Depending on the kid, sorry forgot the write this part.)

I completely disagree. I got my first reptile at 10 and I had no help and she is perfectly fine. I'd say it depends on the kid.

I’m getting a baby pie balld chameleon soon💪🏼 naming it kecleon or charmeleon. For Christmas soon lol. Also there’s a savanah monitor at my LFS right now and it’s like 50$ definitely a good one on the list.

In a couple of your videos, like this one or the rear fanged venomous snake video, you talk about when a snake bites you and won't let go, or chews on you, to quickly remove them from your hand...would be great to see a video on how ro to that without hurting your animal or doing worse damage to yourself. Also other first aid for the animals or how to get a snake or animal off you safely and without hurting them.

I grew up with corn, kings, or milk snakes, some wild caught and some purchased from breeders and they were great kid snakes in my opinion. They were SO awesome. Still love them. Still want them. Planning on getting one. I have held wild corns and never got bit 🤷🏼‍♂️

I was a little surprised when you recommended a corn over a king. I have a corn snake it was my first snake and my first snake bite. she’s an okay snake but not one I’m that interested in any more meanwhile I’ve never had a king snake strike at me and I’ve handled wild ones that are just absolutely sweet and docile. Though I can’t say the same about them musking on me.

I think most snakes are better for handling they just slither across your hand really chill and you just gotta watch where they go it’s also interesting to watch a snake slither it’s so cool although one thing I hate that snakes do (mine do this) it’s when even when the tip of their tail can latch on to almost any object and they don’t like to let go.
