Top 5 Arbalesters | Age of Empire 2

The arbalester is one of the most common unit in PvP games, either as a standard archer in feudal age or a fully upgraded arbalester in imperial age. The later is the one we are going to test today. let's find out which civ has the best arbalesters. First we must find the civs that have bonuses that affect them. The civs are the Britons, the Ethiopians, the Italians, the Koreans, the Mayans, the Vietnamese and the Vikings.
Some bonuses before we jump into the video:
Aztecs: Arbalesters are created 11% faster.
Britons: Arbalesters have +1/2 range in Castle/Imperial Age.
Ethiopians: Arbalesters fire 18% faster.
Koreans: Infantry, Archers and Cavalry Archers cost -50% wood; Warships cost -20% wood.
Koreans: Blacksmith armor upgrades are free.
Mayans: Arbalesters cost -10/20/30% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age.
Portuguese: Arbalesters cost 20% less gold.
Sicilians: Arbalesters receive 33% less bonus damage.
Vietnamese: Arbalesters have +20% hit points.

Koreans deserve at leas an honorable mention. -50% wood and saving on armor upgrades makes them on par with Portuguese, imho.

To be honest, I was thinking of adding them, changed my mind the last minute.
Vietnamese bonus is better than Italian one: 1. Is free and dont require Castle. 2. Works also against siege, what is big issue considering fact Mangos are the main counter to Archers.

Totally agree, but here I am testing the post imperial version of the arbalesters that's why the different ranking.

@@DemonAgeOfEmpires2-wf8lv So you should also test them against Counters - Skirms and Mangos. In most cases in Aoe2 more HP is better than more Armor.

Never forget, Prior to modern balance changes, we all remember Mayans and Obsidian Arrows, a CASTLE AGE research tech. And yes obsidian arrows was still in DE. Fully upgraded arbs and just a bunch of trebs, halbs, and eagles were such a pain to deal against. Even without Obsidian arrows, yeag hard to disagree about Mayans being the clear winner. Fully upgraded AND with discounts.. just good stuff

My favorite archers are ethiopians bcz u can micro them easiest when the opponent have a few knights and u have more archers for exemple

my dear nub frend.... 18% faster firing means barely anything for kiting/microing archers what really matters for that situation is frame delay git gud pls
Vietnamese are my top Civ UwU Saracens are probably still my favorite Arbs. They are super novel. Stomping buildings and towers with Arbs is very satisfy.

I use Saracen archers in multiplayer games even to take down walls and gates
Vikings are a top5 arb civ. They beat 4&5 easily

I did tried them of screen and they couldn't reach fifth place. I didn't post them to keep the video shorter.
Italian and Vietnamese archers should win against vikings ones in a head to head fight but the viking ones are better at fighting high pierce armour opponents like paladins, skirms etc. I think vikings are more well rounded and would be 3rd place in my view. Saracen bonus is more situational, by imperial age I dont think you needs arbs to be sieging since you can just use trebs etc for that.

I've never cared for Mayans even if their archers are so affordable. Eagles are novel and useful and even quite affordable but they are not knights. Perhaps Elite Eagles are better than Cavalier even (especially when cost comparing), but they lack the punch of the unupgraded Castle Age knight usually upto and until they are FU. Playing without any kind of LightCav/Hussar feels very odd. Also Mayans having HeavyScorp but no SiegeEngineers upsets me greatly. Such a spit in the eye moment. I should try Mesos more though; Incas are absolutely tweaked right now.

Even if mayans archers are affordable, players ditch them after they reach castle age and go for plumed.

I disagree with some rankings on this list. Italian arbs are equal too the vietnamse and the they get their upgrade for free?? They should be higher on the list! Furthermore the Saracens bonus is barely any useful in postimp compared to the other ones, so they also should be removed from the list. My list would look something like, Viking/Portugese, Vietnamese, Ethiopians, Mayans, Britons

I use saracens archers in multiplayer games and they are able to melt walls and gates in seconds. They are underestimated imo. I tested vietnamese and Italians and it was back and forth between them..

In my heart, the Britons will always be my favourite archer civ. I never realized how good the Mayans are. I should give them a try.
