I will admit that I do use Mod Podge. I donโt use it as an adhesive for art work. I use it to cover cardboard boxes. I had an art practice that I had built up for 25 years or more. I lost everything when I was evicted. I grabbed what I could. I took my journals. Iโm still remembering things I no longer have. Iโve learned to be less precious or attached to anything. For about three years, I lived in my car. I started rebuilding my art practice immediately. One glue stick at a time, lol. I walked in and out of stores everyday. I noticed cardboard boxes and thought they would be useful as shelving. I learned that Mod Podge is very good for covering cardboard inside and out. It will make the cardboard rigid and it becomes more sturdy. It takes two coats, of Mod Podge, to create a sturdy cardboard container for storing items. I have not found it to be sticky. I agree, that dried, it might make pages stick together. I use a coating of Dorlands Wax Medium to seal work on paper. Sometimes I donโt. Any product that you put on paper will give certain qualities and results. Finding Golden Medium Medium was a game changer. Sometimes I use the Liquitex brand because it is a thinner consistency. The only way to learn about adhesives is to work with them. Yes, I live in an apartment now. Iโm recreating an art practice once more. I, remember, in my last living space, that the first thing I began organizing, were my adhesives. They are an essential tool for art making. Thank you for this video, Robyn. It felt good to recognize most of the products. The Italian items are items that I have not acquired yet. And I have used PVA, for the first time, recently. I was very impressed with its properties.
First of all thank you for the very thorough and easy to follow advice and instructions. I hear the passion in your voice and I appreciate you so much. Iโve been working on a very large scale multi media collage and had a 5ft poster printed , I used Golden soft gel to glue it down section by section. It was pretty challenging, I used a rubber scraper and a print roller and then learned I could use an iron with no water and put a sheet of paper between. Final results there were big bubbles in the paper , the paper is a medium to heavy weight poster. Anyway Iโm going to use my creativity to make it all work. I also noticed even with smaller pieces of medium weight paper using the soft gel medium there was bubbling. I used all the same techniques to adhere it and some of the pigment pulled up and the paper I used as a protective while ironing stuck on the image I glued down. I still have hope in fixing this and using my creative skills. Iโm sorry this is so long but Iโm extremely passionate about this piece Iโm working and would appreciate any advice you may have.โค๏ธ๐๐ฝ
Great list! I love a lot of your faves, too. In addition, I use Tim Holtz Collage Medium and Glossy Accents for a lot of things, as well as Beacon 3 in 1. The Collage Medium is great as a glue to hold just about anything to anything, but it also works as a decoupage style glue that doesn't stay/get sticky because it has resins in it that cure. Plus, it shrinks as it dries so if you accidentally use too much, it usually doesn't show. The Glossy Accents is my favorite for gluing glitter, plastics (sequins, acrylic pieces, etc...) and metals to things because it holds well and dries glossy, adding to the finish if you end up seeing any of it, plus it's great for adding gloss as an accent. Beacon 3 in 1 also holds pretty aggressively and dries super fast without buckling paper, though it is not good for anything plastic as it contains acetone. Thank you for sharing and have a great day! ๐
Instructions on creating the accordion book would be great- do you have a video?
So timely that you explained glues! We just got back from our vacation in Italy where I was hoping to buy some Giotto glue sticks. No luck at all! I checked in several stores that sold glue but all they had was Pritt. I even stopped in a small art supply store and the clerk knew about Giotto paint but not their glue sticks. The closest I got to Giotto was in a a dollar store (Italian style) that carried everything under the sun. They had a huge selection of Giotto art supplies but no glue sticks. But there I did pick up a bottle of Giotto Collage that you showed today. Robyn, I think your enthusiasm for these glue sticks encouraged your Italian followers to buy them up! LOL! But thanks for all your info today - such a help to all of us.
My glues are the most important supply in my studio. I use mostly Uhu and Art Glitter glue and a cheap tacky glue sometimes. I haven't yet got the pH neutral PVA although I intend to start using it. Plus I use gel medium for really chunky stuff like metal or plastic and on jewellery because I can't use solvent based glues like E6000. I'm with you on Mod Podge - I tried it and gave it away - horrible stuff! Thanks for sharing. ๐
How about double sided tape when creating a cover for a journal? I found it helps in avoiding all of the drama with bubbles and so on.
I use wallpaper paste in my journals. It's very inexpensive and gets the job done. Buckeling of pages can be an issue, but the pages return mostly back into a flat state. In my art books I use PVA, watered down. It's quite surprising how much it can be watered down and still stick perfectly. I love glue sticks too, had a disappointing experience with Giotto, from Amazone DE, but I use Uhu and some local ones. Thanks Robyn, interesting as always
finally found where to get the giotto glue after doing my own research.
I use most of these adhesives too and have learned a lot from you Robyn. I also like Dylusions glue sticks. They are about the size of a chapstick and are good for small things like washi tape and small collage paper bits. It seems to hold really well too.
Using the right glue for the right job is an art, too!

Indeed!
Like you I love the UHU and matte medium.. I love the matte medium because all these lovely transparent papers we make with you become more transparent than with other glues
Loved your explanation of WHY you use certain glues for certain projects or types of media. Another great learning experience for me!

I'm glad this was helpful! thank you!
Probably my favorite wet glue is Sobo. It holds well, is very version...you can thin it down and it still works well. Doesn't get cloudy if used as a finish.
i use UHU glue, Coccoina, and matte medium. Im going to order some PVA after listening to you talk about how good it is! Thanks for the tips, Robyn:)
I use Uhu sticks, Elmer's Extra Strength glue sticks, Golden matte medium, and I just discovered Tacky Glue through my grocery store. I recently purchased PVA for Bookbinding. When I first started out with altered books I slathered glossy general use Mod Podge all over everywhere and I used unsealed inkjet prints--that did not go well. Thank you for all the great information!
Hey Robyn, thanks so much. Been loving these workshop this videos.
Congratulations ๐๐๐๐พ on your new book ๐
Such good info. Thank you Robyn.
Great info. Thank you!
Thank you Robyn,helps a lot
Lately, I have been using Liquitex Matte Medium the most simply due to the type of collaging I am doing. I also have some Dick Blick and Elmer glue sticks but I don't really recommend either. They're okay and they work, but I don't always trust that what I'm gluing down will stay down.
Very interesting girl, thanks for sharing with us!

Awesome content! Everybody cares about glue, and what to use when - thank you! If you ever run across a Kokuyo Gloo glue stick, thatโs my personal favorite! (Extra strength). Amazon and Japanese stationery sites sell it, just fyi

I love it because it is SUPER smooth, wrinkle free, grips paper well but gives a few seconds of repositionability, dries invisible, stays stuck, smells good, and the case! It feels great in the hand, doesnโt roll, and you can stick the stick into the cap and it will stand up waiting for you on your desk.

Golden Matte Medium
My absolute favorite adhesive is Liquitex fluid acrylic medium, but I use UHU glue sticks a lot too.
@RobynMcClendon
2 ะถัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Awesome!
I prefer the Liquitex matte medium over the Golden just for the price. Both are excellent quality. I also use the Uhu and Art Glitter Glue. I will need to find a good PVA glue once my stash of USArtQuest runs out.
Thank you. I use all of these but I also use the liquitex matte medium a lot. I like the liquitex because it comes with the squirt top. But I also cover just about everything with matte medium. Liquitex and Goldens. I like how it feels to brush it on and then love how my pages feel in my journals. I would love to learn how to make that accordion journal.

Are you applying some matte medium all over your glued and pasted papers like a varnish? thanks!
I love Art Glitter Glue and Uhu!

Me too!
I love these "Workshop This" videos. By the way, Avery has an acid-free permanent glue stick.

Thank you!
I love the matte medium from Daler*Rowney! It is a wonderful consistency. Smooth, great hold, easy apply, dries nice and clear. But I think they have stopped making it as I use to be able to get it at walmart and now I can not find it anywhere. *sad face* I loved that stuff.
My favorite paste is methyl cellulose. It is vegetable based and can be wet so the paper will contort. It is mixed at home, comes in a powder, with cold water so you can make it thicker. It doesn't need to be cooked, acid-free, archival and reversible. Many bookbinders use PVA and methyl cellulose mixed half and half. It bonds paper unless using clay-coated papers, then I use PVA. Never use rubber cement glue or YES paste. They are NOT acid free and will age to a brown color. Yes, YES paste is bad, even though the packaging says archival.
TY for your video----which do you use for shiny pages?????????????
Great video! As a newbie to the collage world it was so helpful to hear this explanation on the whys of different glues! I will eagerly follow your comments to see what other artists say. Question, you used PVA on the book you showed but there were no wrinkles...how do you deal with that? Could that be a subject for another workshop this?
Giotto has become my favorite glue stick!!

Giotto for paper collages?
I was using mod podge but I didn't like the brush cleaning part of it. I tried to apply it with a credit card but cannot get a nice thin layer of glue and the paper often buckles up so I abandoned. I prefer uhu glue stick now and glitter glue with the needle top. However I am concerned by the fact that the plastic stick is not recycled in my area. I saw someone use wallpaper glue for her collage and I intend to give it a try and see if it would have a lesser ecological footprint. Thanks Robyn.
This was so helpful and refreshing to know that you don't have to use matt medium for everything. I'm a beginner and I use PVA and glue stick. If I need to glue down a chunky monkey I use E6000.

QUESTION- would the pva in a fine tip bottle leave a bump or ridge if I used it under copy paper or cardstock? I use a lot of art glitter glue, tacky glue, matte mecium (liquitex), and gloss gel. I bought bearly art glue because it was winter. Bearly art is not my favorite. Art glitter glue is a favorite because I am a cardmaker. It holds quickly and doesn't usually add "bumps". I don't sell my art. It is a personal choice. I make A LOT of cards for church (about 300 to 500 a year), and for my own personal use. I have completed my first completely hand made journal and LOVE that process.
I use the matt medium and hi tack glue . With the stick glue I never found it sticks well pritt stick is its name. Thank you for this video helps alot. โค๏ธ

I love your workshop thisโฃ๏ธGlues are always a favorite subject, I hope you enjoy checking out the following: Rublev Colours-Mounting Adhesive for canvas, paper, wood and metal. Glaze & Glue from craft fantastic, itโs so nice and clear for small visual vignettes and gluing other objects on top. When it comes to glue sticks I enjoyed your recommendation of jot and because it was easily rewettable I added in watercolor to great effect. All best!๐
My fav is Golden Matte Medium- but it is too liquidy and hard to control for me. So- I use Golden Matte GEL medium. Itโs terrific for fabrics as well and much easier to control. Also I get maximum stickage withTim Holtz collage medium, and Dina wake,y ultra thick gel medium. Also- I have had no luck with UHU. I like Elmerโs glue sticks that go on purple and dry clear.

@@xinjoy6236 no- I only use it as a glue. I donโt like putting medium on my work as a top coat.
I don`t see the link for site to purchase the glue stick giotto.๐ฅ๐ฅ
Can you paint over these glues?
I just recently discovered Tombow glue in a double ended tube. It has been a substitute for both Art Glitter glue and Fabritac because it adheres cloth and wax seals as well as paper, even the glossy paper. Have you used it? I just ordered a big refill for the tube. It seems to be a combination of water based and solvent based glues but I really donโt know. As for the glues you use, I also like the same ones, except the Golden but thatโs only because Iโm a hobbyist in journal making and not making archival art. Great to know your take on glues, thanks! ๐ฆ๐โค๏ธ๐
I notice you left FabriTac off the list. Can you tell me why?
@shelleynobleart
2 ะถัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thought to chime in, unasked I realize. But this point is very important to me and think the info may help some. I understand acetone based adhesives, like Fabritac, ideally would require use of respirator to protect respiratory from fumes and gloves to protect from sensitizing skin from prolonged skin contact. I avoid use of anything other than non-toxic materials as much as possible.
