I mean, unprepared, alone, and taking unnecessary risks... yeah.. all of those. Otherwise they’re all relatively safe.

It must be frustrating to warn people that they need to train and can’t go diving somewhere and they don’t listen, die, and then you have to go down and get their bodies.

@@balanc-joy9187 If you're talking about Everest a group of Sherpas actually did go and move most of the bodies out of sight a few years ago, including "green boots" who was the main one used as a landmark.

I served with Gary on the USS Ponce back in 2001-2004. He was a great sailor! It was very nice of you to share his story on this tragic night. He is a true hero! RIP Chief Rehm

finding that air pocket was like a miracle... but then realizing you won't be found must have been devastating. granted, he did it to himself - he was warned many times about the dangers - but I do feel sorry for his family.

The fact that 27 survivors, would've been ONLY 8, if it wasn't for that man's selflessness, is absolutely astonishing. I hope he's at peace and knows just how many lives he saved, and I hope his family are doing well 🥺💙

When I heard Gary saved 19 of his "kids" I started crying. Stellar papa, right there. I can't say I blame him. I can't imagine being willing to leave them behind even if there seemed like there was no hope. 🖤🧿🖤

Right? A part of you just wants to climb that ladder and get to safety as soon as possible to save yourself. But the other part of you realizes you won't be able to live with yourself if you don't at least try your best to save your shipmates. Very sad.

The fact that Yuri Lipski was recording his entire demise is horrifying. Apparently, the person who recovered Yuri's body and equipment didn't know the camera that Yuri used was still functional and didn't bother checking it for footage. He gave it to Yuri's mother... and the mother was one of the first people to watch her son die. I can't imagine how gut-wrenching that would be. Edit: I don't know the story verbatim and by heart, so forgive me if this is not 100% correct.

They actually watched it together - they told his mother what they found and she wanted to see it, and they had no idea what was on it so they put it on. He regrets it immensely.

@@dgage1776 It wasn’t about that, he took the most selfless action because he cared about his men, his brothers, he gave them a chance to live and a chance to have a family of their own, he denied all survival instincts and left a legacy for his own family and crew that he didn’t die in vain but out of complete selflessness and sacrifice for those he cared for, so they could have the chance to start a family of their own in the future if they so choose. Of course his family will bear the pain of loosing him, but at least his family can revere him for paying the ultimate sacrifice, a price that most will never be tested for. You never know a mans true colors until his life is on the line.

If you have love and care for other people like this man did then the answer is simple. Wouldn’t you try to do the same for your family?

You’re allowed to let go of the guideline in cave diving, you’re just always supposed to be in eye sight of it and if it’s a silty area then you want to be right beside it within arms reach. If you want to go explore away from the main line, then you tie off with a reel and begin laying your own line wherever you go so you can then always find your way back to the main line.

@@AnxiousAlien... Because if something happens to said line during their search, they would be another body in the water. Not to mention that there is a difference between a rescue team and a body retrieval team, and with all evidence pointing to the man being dead and the police intending to cut the cave off from diving, there was no point in sending a body retrieval team to risk getting lost and meeting a similar fate.

The USS Fitzgerald was my last sea going command. I left a year before this accident happened and four of those sailors were my friends, including Chief Rehm. So many failures on the bridge and CIC that morning, it's really a god damn shame. Rest in peace to all seven sailors that drowned on that ship. Fair winds and following seas.

Gary Rehm was my cousin's husband. He was 2 months from retirement when this happened. It was devastating. Silver lining: his wife is doing much better and we still see her at family events. Edit: he did receive a post-humous promotion but that's all

@@RedboRF there was a petition to name a ship after him. But it never went anywhere. I can only speculate but I believe it has to do with the Navy trying to cover up the incident because it was their own screw-up and didn't want to admit it. This is all speculation but there still isn't many details on what exactly happened or why.

Gary seems like he was a very selfless, brave man for putting his life on the line to save his fellow sailors. We should all aspire to be that caring for our fellow human beings.

I have no idea what the guy went through inside the cave on the little island inside the air-pocket alone waiting to hopefully be rescued, which turned into waiting to die, as I'm sure he realized that at some point as evidenced by him leaving a note in the sand to his wife & Mother... I'm glad he was able to leave a note in the sand & glad by pure luck that he was discovered so that his wife & Mother can know he was thinking of them before he died.

The last guy took a risk but it was for a noble cause, this dude just let go of the line for curiosity's sake. After being saved TWICE, which tells me he didn't even care about the guys who saved him.

What's up with those dry cavers that found the 2nd dude, who know they are near an underground lake but are busting through into new passages sounds super sketchy- imagine busting into the water and not being 'dry' cavers anymore, yikes!

I've heard so many of these stories by now that I rarely get emotional. There's too many tragic ways to die, you know? But Gary's sacrifice for his "kids" absolutely made me cry bitter tears. What man.

My daughter is an OS1 in the Navy and recently finished sea duty on the USS Fitzgerald. She was part of the replacement crew that came in immediately after this tragedy happened. Several of her shipmates who survived the accident would go on to take their own lives roughly a year after this happened. The ship was rebuilt and has since been back to sea for another deployment but it still hasn’t 100% recovered from the events of this crash. As a Marine and as the mother of a Sailor it’s always heartbreaking to see young servicemembers die, especially like this. Fair wind and flowing seas shipmates.

As an Egyptian this is the first time I've heard about the dangers of diving in the blue hole! So sad for those who lost their lives, hope people realize the danger and be careful

Gary died while serving his country. For saving 19 sailors lives, and sacrificing his own, I think he deserves the Medal of Honor!! Does anyone agree? RIP Gary Ream, you are more than a hero in my books! But, as always, that's just my opinion! :)))

@Spone FN All of the sailors helped each other out, which is probably because of Gary's example. Gary, a truly honorable hero, traded his life for NINETEEN other lives. Instead of TWENTY THREE people dying in that tragic situation, leaving their families forever, ONLY SEVEN DID. Do the math. Because of Gary's selfless sacrifice, there was less than 1/3 the loss that could have happened, and he did it knowing full well what his end would be. Some people can't handle guilt. Leaving for so many people he cared about to die would have eaten him alive in his retirement.

My friend’s husband was on that ship. The survivors guilt the group had was very difficult for them as well as the choice to close the hatch. My friend’s husband, an incredible man, died 5 years ago from a heart attack. He is greatly missed!

Seriously though, cave diving has to be one of the scariest things you can do in the modern era. Things go from comfortable to "we are going to die" in moments.

Going into any cave is scary. That movie about the guy who went into the cave and got stuck and died because they couldn’t get him out. I can’t remember the name of the movie but it’s a true story and I cried so hard. That is one of my biggest fears. Seriously being stuck somewhere like that’s .

Gary must have been an amazing person. RIP to all those sailors who lost their lives so tragically. My condolences to their family and friends.

I learned to dive off the Sinai peninsula while in the military. Our pinnacle dive was going to Dahab to dive the blue hole. It was very intense training and we were very serious about it. I have a picture of all the memorial plaques that are on the cliff side near the blue hole, and Yurihas a plaque there. It was very sobering. Fortunately, our whole crew made it down and back up with no trouble. Exceptional memories, and I recommend diving in Egypt for anyone who can.

The second story pissed me off. The guy was endangering his fellow two divers with his dumb actions. He could've been diving today if all he did was adhere to BASIC safety instructions. You don't respect safety and you can die, and while tragic... I think it's completely his fault and he's actually lucky he didn't KILL his fellow divers. What an idiot.

@@hunterzolomon1303 That is not what happened. He went in with a group. The guidelines were set out before *they* went into the water. Even after he 'wanders off at his own risk' the others brought him back to the line. And he wanders off again. Even mid dive, while in the caves and being 'brought back to the line' he acknowledged that he needed to stay on the line. And he ignored it again. The divers that went in with him could have been killed each time that he wandered off. Even after they were forced to go back up. Rescue teams and divers risked their own lives to try and save him. Even after the rescue teams said no more, his friends wanted to go back and risk their lives again. I understand the idea that it was _just_ his life. But it wasn't. Those two friends. They will forever feel that weight. Doing his own research means crap in this situation. Saying that he probably did his own research and that it is his life to risk ONLY applies if he charters his own boat, and gets into the water alone. With no group. With no person waiting on the surface for him to follow his own research and make it out. That's not what happened.

I was onboard the USS Dewey when the fitz got hit and we were the first responding ship to the incident. Gary’s story gave me chills and broke my heart 😢 Such a selfless act to sacrifice himself in an attempt to save as many of his “kids” as possible. May he rest in peace.

The last story about the true hero Gary, brought tears to my eyes. To think he sacrificed himself and was able to help save the lives of 19 of his “ kids” is amazing. He really does deserve recognition ❣️

He did. I know a Sailor that was there when that crash happened and yes, he was given proper recognition for his courage and sacrifice. He truly was considered the Father figure of the entire ship.

Sad stories 😔. The first 2 stories can be saved but they didn't listen. I feel bad that the second guy got out of water and thought could be saved, but bec they stopped the rescue way too early. Gary ❤❤❤ a true hero. People like him need to get recognized. Thank you for telling his story 👏👏

I hope Gary got medals for his bravery and his family even his loss know what a hero he his. I pray for them. They lost a great man, but as long as his story continues to be told he’ll never be forgotten.

We need more Gary’s in this world and hearing a true to life hero’s story told in a manner of the utmost dignity and respect touched my heart. I did not expect that last story. What an astoundingly brave and dedicated man to do what he did...knowing that he may not make it but all those other men would. I have a feeling i will remember this story and you, Gary, for a long time, and I hope thanks to this video that many more will remember you too 🙂

The second story about Peter wandering away from the guideline makes me think that divers need to invent some kind of leash thing so they are connected to any guideline they are to stay on. This leash would allow them to wander away from the guideline, yet still be able to find the guideline again. I don't know how long such a leash would need to be or what materials it should be made out of, but it would probably save any wanders from death. It's just so sad to hear diver death stories. Even sadder when the death could have been avoided if they had gone with another diver or just obeyed the rules of the dive!

I’m just leaving this comment to express my appreciate for people like Gary. The world would be a better place with more people like him. Thank you for your service soldier.

Gary did what most would never do and that is put the lives of others over his own and that is why he is a real hero.

Just want to say a few words for Gary the sailor who put his fellow sailors lives ahead of his own. What a remarkable and brave human being may he rest in peace

There is something particularly unsettling about a former Navy Seal telling scuba diving horror stories. If a particular underwater cave scares you, I’m not going within 100 miles of that shit.

If scuba diving saturation mixes are so hazardous and can make people lose their sh!t so quickly, shouldn't we be looking for other ways to do it? Like, most of these underwater cave diving disasters has something to do with (mostly) experienced divers getting nitrogen intoxicated, panicking at the worst moment and doing stupid sh!t. Sperm whales are able to free dive to a almost 3000m depths with seemingly no serious dangers to them - other than their hazardous food source (giant squid) down there. Shouldn't we try to reverse engineer the physiological mechanisms that allow these extraordinary feats in sperm whales? 10s of millions of years of evolution seems a good start.

Not a lot of things make me cry but I'm bawling after hearing Gary's story. People like him are rare. Not a religious person but it made me think of this passage. "Greater love hath no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends."

My heart loves Gary so much and I am genuinely proud of him and as awesome as he is I am still sad that he had to die. This world needs so many more men like him! I hope you are resting in paradise, hero!

At one point in my life, i wanted to travel the world! Thanks to your show i have heard and seen a lot of places ive wanted to go or never heard of....now i am almost certain that i will keep a "mental note" of these stories, and absolutely never go to most of these places 🤣

The first two stories had me thinking "These guys have no consideration for their own lives." That last story was the same thought, but in a very different tone. To risk one's life saving others, or trying to save others is the most heroic way to go.

I would’ve never imagined hearing about my first Navy ship (USS Fitzgerald DDG 62), honestly thank you for that! There was one sailor that day I didn’t know (I was long transferred from the command by then) but I remember Gary from deployments and spending time in berthings. My two best friends Shingo and Carlos passed away that day and it was truly heartbreaking, but the entire Fitzgerald family has been able to recover, we’re staying strong and some still have reunions even after 4 years

I am so sorry for your loss!! Thank you for your service!! I'm a Devil Dog MoM and my Marine is married to a Navy frog. When she was stationed at Okinawa, they did maneuvers on the Sacagawea, which she constantly tells her hubby that it shouldn't even be called a boat, she had smoother rides on a white water raft going over class V rapids. It never dawned on me that someone could die on a ship, when we are fighting land wars.

Thank you for your service. This story really had me crying. Coming from a family with mixed military service (including one grandfather that served in the Coast Guard during the one time they were definitely away from the U.S. coast, WW2), hearing stories like this one really upset me.

I've been wanting to say this to Mr. Ballen for a while now, but I'm afraid of how it'll come out. So, hopefully it comes out sounding alright. I want to thank you for two things. One, for becoming famous on youtube and keeping real to yourself. I've heard so many horror stories of when someone becomes famous here or on similar settings, then becomes uber creepy or worse. So, it's wonderful to know and see that it's possible to make fame and not become some creepo or whatever. Two, for your insane patience especially while talking about people that do stupid things. You don't even hint that you feel or think they're morons, and I respect that and want to become like that, so I look up to you for that as well. Due to being beaten, r*ped, starved, and left to fend for myself growing up, I became angry. Later in years, I found out that many family members, friends of mine, and friends of my mother's knew I was being abused, and the main culprit that was egging all these people on to do this and that to me was my own mother. She sold me out to different guys in hopes that one of them would get me pregnant so she could take my baby as her own. And so, I've become very jaded, even though I know I shouldn't be angry at the world for what some dozens of people did to me, I did become angry, and thus turned inward so as to not hurt others. And watching and seeing you have such patience; it gives me someone to look at for that quality and to keep trying to emulate it until I get there. So, thank you, Mr. Ballen.

Not many stories make me cry. Gary's did. That is an example of the best of humanity. "Hero" doesn't even cover it.
