    Yeah or obstructing it. Honestly, even a lazy person can dive down and jam a couple towels in there or something. A sign, an "X" of 2x metal bars that are drilled to cover that hole, anything.. hell, a rope that goes up the right exit.. literally just drop a rope with a weight attached down the entrance if you are lazy and don't want to guide it yourself.

    It's not that dangerous if you are properly trained and follow all the rules. Which these guys absolutely did not do (It may have been an old enough story there weren't all those rules yet, I'm not sure. Regardless, nowadays it's not that dangerous). It's not as safe as reading at home, sure, but not particularly more dangerous than private aviation or hunting, or hiking difficult routes or so on.

But a mysterious disappearance?! That surprised me! Thanks for finding and posting this one! Side note: If anyone dreams of a Hawaii vacation, just be aware that the government there has a really bad habit of coverups… They can’t afford to scare away tourists, so too many murders, disappearances, and other crimes are hushed up. The stairway to heaven is one of my favorite trails and being a native Hawaiian we go hunting over there all the time. My dad was a guard over-there and he had countless stories of people who actually live there, they are bush people and are like animals, literally “mutating humans.” My dad had encountered them many times and said that the language they spoke was not Hawaiian, it was like inaudible groans and noises. Very aggressive people and are most likely people who grew up in the wilderness of those valleys and live off the land like my ancestors. Would not recommend this trail but if you are an adrenaline junkie and love a thrill, your are welcome to do so at your own risk.

    The stairway hike is dangerous, but only if it’s rainy or really windy. David was out on a clear day with decent wind conditions. I’ve done that hike a few times with my Marine buddies while I was stationed on O’ahu, and it’s very unlikely he would have fallen or slipped on a day like that. Not to mention the fact they never found a body, and he was hiking alone. Also, there’s no reason for anyone to be in those trees, no other trails are NEAR that close to the stairway trail, and he does look like he’s crouching. I’ve heard many stories of single’s and couple’s “disappearing” during night hikes on O’ahu. I’ve also heard there is a group of very resentful locals who kidnap and murder tourists because they don’t like tourists or outsiders. Some locals have very strong opinions about this stuff, but don’t let this scare you away, most of the locals are amazing kind warm-hearted people, these are just some rumors I had heard during my service.

    @gavinjenkins899

    You can absolutely see things. That comment only pertained to a single room of a specific cave. Not all cave diving in general. It's probably not even true anyway, I believe that happened quite awhile ago and techniques have improved since then for kicking in ways that don't pull up silt. Some places it's still unavoidable, but like 95% of the time you can see just fine if you have good technique. There is also no reason to seal off false exits, because you ALWAYS follow a rope line, and the line has the direction to the true exit on arrows tied into it regularly. It is not possible to end up in a false exit unknowingly if you follow the required certification training and rules. Meanwhile, people sometimes WANT to go into false exists to see them, and sealing them off would prevent that. But when you go in, you again have a rope line, with the arrows pointing BACK out to the real exit, so you cannot get confused if you follow the rules.

    After watching a ton of your videos, I'm left with a question that I couldn't possibly be the first person to ask: why on earth isn't there some sort of marker, sign, anything that someone would put up in these caves where they have false exits? It looks like someone would mark these places so other divers would know this is not the exit. The shear number of stories I've heard where divers "got confused" and went the wrong way trying to get out is astonishing.

    that last story is so sad. they shouldn’t have risked going to a sealed off area at all, but it makes me wonder so badly what richard saw that made him peel out of there so quickly without his equipment. if he just let go of the tank you think he would’ve tried his hardest to get it instead of just letting it go. it makes me wonder if there were bodies/bones in the way of the tight space. or if it was something worse... sadly we’ll never know. huge shout out to his friend for immediately sharing his air and trying to save him. if only they wouldn’t have went up the wrong way, then they both could’ve lived. but it’s an easy mistake ESPECIALLY in super stressful situations.. that’s what people don’t understand. they like to talk shit from the comfort of their couch saying they’d do this and they’d do that, but the truth is, there is NO guarantee on what you would do in these situations and you’ll never know unless it happens to you. the body and mind does some really fucked up things in times of stress and danger. not to mention all of the added weirdness that being deep underwater already does to you.

    I'm thinking there was probably at least one body right near the exit but not in it, since you have to wriggle out of it, he'd have to have gotten through and turned around. I'm thinking he saw something and was surprised or startled, dropped the tank, and maybe it's one of those dark bottomless pits, so he panicked and now he's panicking even more trying to squeeze through this hole, that far down, without any air, knowing that if his friend wasn't there or didn't take action fast enough to share air he'd be dead.

    I've done the stairway 4 times, every time there were many others on the path. I think it unlikely someone would have abducted him, though it is possible he fell. There are 2 places where ropes are used instead on a ladder to get to the next ladder segment. Also, the ladders are thin, so whenever there is a person going the opposite direction, one of you have to hang off one of the sides to allow passage. It's completely possible he needed to relieve himself, excited the ladder on a less inclined area, then slipped off in an area not adjacent to the path.

    I'm a very experienced diver (advanced open water & rescue diver certified). You couldn't pay me enough to go cave diving. Way too much that could go wrong. And I'm not a timid person either, I've taken plenty of stupid risks doing stupid things, and used to be a firefighter. But I will not go into an underwater cave. I'm generally pretty wary of terrestrial caves too.

As I specifically remember the part about the girlfriend and how her fella left to pop and do something. I Couldn't for the life of me remember where id heard it. Now I'm watching this I also recall the first tale here, and realise as a noob, it was infact you I watched years ago. Your tale made me look more into the event. I'm glad to be back and am watching back2back. My daughter has been relegated to the tablet atm for her videos. Glad to see you're still going strong.
