Salmon fishing from a kayak is one of the most exciting fisheries in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes region. In this video I discuss my choices for my three favorite kayak salmon trolling rods. These are great for trolling flashers or dodgers with bait or lures or even crankbaits. Suited for large salmon such as King, Coho, or Chum Salmon these rods will not let you down.

Thanks for the recommendations! Got a couple TRD’s for my dad and waiting for one of the Lamiglass ones to get back in stock. Love that they are just up the road from my folks house. Going to try to find a medium light Tevala for and all around rod someday
A few years ago I ran 7-7 1/2 ft rods out the back of my jet shed for springers... we boats 10 springers that year on them... people sometimes get carried away with the idea that the longer the better...

Awesome info. Definitely going to pick up that shimano
Good input. Thanks
Nice vid bro, very helpful
Think I'll get a couple of those 8‘6” TDR rods in ML for the upcoming sockeye season.
Love our 9' battle glass rods! Have performed great so far this season for Sockeye and Pinks, looking forward to targeting kings with them

Really happy to hear this I’m going back and forth between the 9’ battle glass and a Okuna guide choice 9’3 any suggestions

Looking forward to meeting you later this month for the OT trip. Would love to brainstorm some content ideas that we could shoot while out there. Maybe a podcast like video where we speak on differences in PNW/Great Lakes tactics for Salmon. Spitballing ideas anyway.

Sweet! I didn't know for sure that you were going to be able to make it. Let's touch base soon and start brainstorming

@@spiltmilt Will do! I’ll reach out via Instagram DM this week.
I know this is an old post , but what about salmon REELS?
Awesome videos Tyler, thank you! Are there any issues running dropper rigs with the shimano trevala rod given it’s so light?

I run up to 16 oz on these with no issue.
I take it that king you released had an adipose fin (which was hard to see from where I'm sitting).

Til: don't high stick and just bring the whole rod up. Are we going to get some recommended reels next? Thanks!

I could do a reel video but honestly think reels are less important. As long the drag is halfway decent you can land a King.
What do you recommend reel wise for trolling? Please feel fee to hold back if thats gunna be some future content!

I think reels are of lesser importance. I love my Shimano Tekota 300 LC and low profile Okuma Coldwaters but I also use the Okuma Convectors as a more economical choice on my wife's setups and they work fine.
Do you just swap your same reels from rod to rod when trolling? If so what kind of line do you run on those reels?

I have dedicated trolling reels spooled with 50 lb braid
I have a Goture- warrior 4pcs, 8,6inch Medium/high spinner Rod. Should/can I troll like he is in this video with that?
The Shimano Trevala isn't available on your link. Is this the TVC70L model?

I have checked the main local fishing tackle stores including the NW Sportsman show and can't find a light action shimano trevala castinf/jigging rod. Called shimano the recommended ordering online through Tackle Direct. They were out of stock. I have seen some trevala rods and I do like the quality and the way they feel bu can't find the right one. Any suggestions? Thank you
I just received the latest version of the lemon glass from Amazon today. Now if you could just match me to a nice real..
I am interested in the angle of your rods while trolling. I troll for bull reds about the same size as the fish you first caught in this video and haven't really developed a preference. It looks like you have something dialed in here and I'm curious about your thoughts.

I actually prefer my rods to be out a little more so as to provide more flex and greater spread but I tend to angle them in for the camera. It does make them easier to remove from the rod holder.
The TDR rods are offered in a 8’6” medium light (8-17lb) Do you think that would be adequate for a Kokanee rod for dropper rigs? I’m fairly new to Kokanee fishing and still building up my gear on a budget.
@spiltmilt

They do but there are better options on a budget for Kokanee. What size droppers r u going to run?

@@spiltmilt I haven’t tried any more than 4oz as of yet, but I’m new to Kokanee fishing
Do you have budget reels that you recommend? That would be a good video.

any chance you can comment on your salmon trolling set up? i.e. what weight and rig are you using to drop the line down? How deep can this line get at what speed?

does that extra length make it noticeably more difficult to net fish compared to the 7 foot trevala?
@spiltmilt
2 жыл бұрын
For me it does which is why I prefer the shorter rods.
Tyler have you ever lost a rod on a kayak . And why don’t you use lanyards.
@spiltmilt
3 жыл бұрын
No I don't use lanyard and there is a reason for this. Here is my story www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=12939.msg142854#msg142854
