I’ve Spent over $1000 on fishing gear of this year when I got back into it. My son who uses a $50 rod and reel combo catches more than all of us.

I went out south of Tampa a few days ago with my cheap "kids" combo rod and I caught more fish then my buddy and his expensive designer gear. same bait, same style. if you're new to salt water just get what you can and have fun.

One comment on your discussions regarding mono/braid...I find the real difference is in the quality of the materials as a "leader material" vs. a "main line material". Obviously there are qualities of the mono/braid we want for rig making that we don't want for our main line. After having made/used hundreds of rigs over the years, I'm back to using the Ande mono leader material spools. Convenience, toughness, line memory, price......all in Ande's favor. Thanks again; keep up your great work.

Same here, Christopher. After spending the last 40 plus years bass fishing, Salt Strong definitely shortened my learning curve. The bonus is keeping tackle simple and affordable. 2-3 plano tackle trays and a few bags of soft plastics is all I own.

A few thoughts on what line to use: Salt strong have videos on this - the thinking has changed drastically due to their own testing. All lines sink - mono just sinks slower than flouro and not much slower - so not a big difference really. I am an old timer, long time fishing - they have changed my mind - I have lots of lines in various diameters (pound test is not a good indicator of strength as the manufacturer pays for or does the testing themselves). I now buy only mono in bulk (500 yards plus). I think that you should buy mono from a decent manufacturer with time tested decent quality line (not expensive frankly). So I buy maxima mono now only - in 500yd or more spools - I buy by diameter (line size) only. I have bought it all in the past, but no longer. I fish everything - fly (fresh and salt), bass (baitcaster and spin), salt (trolling, jigging, surfcasting, casting), trotter centerpin - the point is for every reel I use braid to mono leader (or using up my old fluro). So my leader line is very low cost as I buy maxima in bulk. I will spend more for braid I like - like power pro slick 8 or power pro quatro - I use the braid for about a half season (heavy use) and then swap it around (reverse the line on my reel) to get better use out of it. No more hassles with rats nests etc. Braid to mono leader - same with fly line leader (tippet) even on the end of sinking leaders or sinking (2 or 3 sinking) fly line. Rod then line then reel - could not agree more. The one example I can think of for a good quality drag is using spinning tackle for steelhead with very light leader (what a fish to catch!) - your drag has to be very good (The new shimano stradic is amazing for under $200). All this advice they give is gold and it is backed up by their testing too - they show it all and let you decide - great stuff - your never too old to learn! Also on fly line: I find that the line is very expensive these days - If you are not hung up on “loops” for your line, I think there are well priced line for fly (floating, intermediate, sinking etc) that are old school, where you will tie a “nail knot” or such to join various lines together and thus save major bucks - the quality of lines such as Cortland are very good and do compete with top dollar lines - just not all the frills etc. - There are some top guides for fly who will insist that when going for bigger game fish that their clients have line joined by nail knot as it is more trustworthy than a heat joined loop on the joining end of a fly line - frankly it just makes sense.

Couple things to look for is simply observing the area for birds. Where there's birds 🐦 feeding on bait fish the fish you're looking for will be there. Also permitting your near structure transitions an bluffs with transitions meaning rock an brush near the rock on the bluff. Eddie's slightly swirling motions in the water that are created from more aggressive current in the water. Finding grass or rock piles by scanning near the bottom for grass, also the very bottom very slowly. It's important to have a quality rod to feel the contour of ocean bed for rock or grass or pockets. Scan areas thoroughly before doing actual fishing. If you get bites while fishing lure very slowly at the bottom or near the bottom for big grass structure or rock awesome. Vary your retrieve as you scan structure an pauses. Fast 2 seconds then moderate 1 second to keep in strike zone longer, switch up retrieve all different ways. The same with pauses. If it's colder start slower retrieve an longer pauses. Sometimes you will get bites as you scan area with fishing lure very slowly to observe the area by feel. I do this because I don't want to spend a ton of money on maps an such. Yes I do use navionics but I will probably cancel because I use basics what I learned to catch fish. The time of day an areas such as points pockets on bed of water I'm fishing pockets an points sticking out from shore or pointed pockets going inward. Pockets in grass as well. The water level weather it's high or low

Interesting information on the lines. We have been told for years that mono was inferior. So flouro is better at backlashing, breaking, and costs more.

I fish now in Owen sound. I fish for salmon and trout. Everything you say applies to everything I have done for years. Great tips thou. I love it. I catch fish constantly. As a scuba diver, I can say that for every 33 feet of depth, the light necessary to see color is lost in the order of the rainbow. So, below 33’, the color red is not visible, for example. Please, factor this in with your testing.

As a MSDT with over 4k dives, I can say loss of color has nothing to do with pressure, especially measured in ATMs (33' depth). The loss of color is related to light penetration.

At 10 feet red is clearly visible, even if the water is somewhat murky. But the depth of water layer plays a role in how quickly the first part of the light spectrum starts to disappear, regardless of how turbid the water is. So your answer is only partially correct, even if you are an Albert Einstein of scuba diving.

So much certainty… But eyes vary between species. Redfish see light differently than Rainbows. What you see is not particularly relevant to what a fish sees. Also, water varies. A stream with clay sediment will lose the spectrum in a different order than a quarry of gin-clear water. Some places the sea is blue, some places it is green, etc. That’s not a surface phenomenon. What I’m saying is simply this: there are no absolutes. Which color works best will vary from day to day, from place to place, and from fish to fish.

One thing I didn’t hear you mention in the “flouro v mono” topic is that flouro sinks and mono doesn’t. I don’t know how important that is in the saltwater arena, but I know in the bass fishing that I do it can be a very important aspect when choosing a line to get the proper action out of a specific bait. I’ll use a mono leader if I’m trying to get a topwater bait to float properly or a jerkbait to suspend properly and I’ll use flouro if I’m trying to get to the bottom faster with crank baits or jigs or whatever.

I tend to buy and use stuff only I've used before that I've caught fish with, whether its hooks, fishing line, weight and sinker set up, I don't think brand name matters some times, but you want good equipment that's warranty, like Shimano, Daiwa, Okuma, etc., I think the biggest waste of money is lures. People on trips use them all the time, and they never seem to catch as much as anglers who use live bait especially on saltwater, whether inshore or offshore. Anyways like the video guys, keep it up!

great video with awsome information! I will say that I agree that the knot strengh of mono is way better then flouro. I am mostly a bass fisherman but I am starting to get into inshore salt water fishing now. Just about every break off I have had bass fishing has been on flouro line. I am also not a fan of braided line I do understand the benefits of it but I hate having to tie litter's on all the time and I feel that it just creat's another breaking point in your line. But that is just me So I just use straight mono and some flouro on my light spinning gear.

Yo guys. Very new to watching your videos and really like them. I’m planning on becoming a member soon. Question on this video tho. When you talked about the rods y’all didn’t mention anything on which lengths to use. I need some new rods and not sure what length I should get.

I've used Maxima Floro fishing line in 200 yard spools as leader material for the last 10 years in the ocean with not one problem. I fish for 2 months every year in Northern California for rockfish to albacore tuna with the line as leader and haven't seen any problems that would make me switch yet. Use what works for you.

My 13 Fishing Inception reel is 3.5 years old and was less than $100.00. Other than a bearing upgrade, I rinse it after each use, break it down and run it through the ultrasonic cleaner a couple times a year, it runs like a champ. It’s on a 7’ Shimano GLF medium rod. It’s my ‘go to’ right out of the gate every morning. That being said, I love my 13 Fishing Concept C’s and Shimano Calcutta’s, but that little Inception is a workhorse at less than half the price of the others.

I don’t know man I’ve caught a ton of fish on my Penn battle iii combo. Also from Texas to Va 😌 don’t stop at the Carolinas lol.

First, thank y’all for all the great info y’all bring man. Solid stuff. Regarding flouro vs mono. I’ve been considering using flouro for lighter lures where feel and sensitivity come into play. From what I’ve heard, flouro seems to sink better than mono and reducing the bow in your line. Will it a make big enough difference in staying in contact with your lure and help to not miss the bite? Or am I just over thinking it? Or is there another way to combat this problem? Thanks again guys

I agree to the line. Went fishing with a friend, and he was catching fish with the same lurer. The fish could see my braid. So I tied mono to the braid and started catching fish.

On the mono/fluoro argument has wet strength and abrasion resistance been compared? I use mono mainline in different sizes for leaders because of pricing but, to be fair, fluoro doesn't absorb water as much which might make some difference.

With the wide variation in size, weight, drag, and even line capacity, it's very difficult to recommend a particular size in my opinion. For instance, a Penn Slammer III 3500 versus a 3000 Stradic.

I bought a spool of 35# mono 250 yds for $3.97 and its my leader line for my 50# braid.

Looking forward to the line visibility test.

I took my two girls fishing at Vilano Beach Pier, their 10 and 12, with a zebco 202 with 12 lb line, and a medium rod I put together from some reels and rods I collected years ago from yard sales for $5. My 10 yr old caught a 14.5 inch flounder and a Sheepshead, and my 12 yr old caught kingfish all day. We were at the shallow end of the pier. So all these guys lined on the pier using $100 combos and my girls out-fished them. They were not pulling in the big fish, but that didn't matter. They had a good time. So it's possible to catch fish with a small setup if you know how to set it all up. My rod and reel were yard sale items for $10 and I still use them today. By the way, I never wetted my line at all and we ate fish for dinner.

Thank you so much, thank you so very much! I can't believe there are people out there not wanting to earn more money buy selling a brand. But you guys look legit. I went and tested what you said about mono and fluoro: it's true! I come from the Caribbean where they fish only with mono because it's cheap. Well, the locals outfish me every time with my 1000 dollar fishing gear/outfit and them with their handline with mono using the same hooks and bait in the same boat.

My 7ft original penn battle 5000 was a combo with a matching graphite battle rod. it is by far my most well balanced and comfortable set up. Pulled several big stripers this year

I picked a Penn battle III 3000 combo with the Penn battle rod.....so far it’s been great, in fact I gave this setup to the wife and I got the Penn battle III 8000 HS and paired it with a Shimano rod (way overkill ) ......but the piece de resistance is the Moana rod and reel combo with the rubber fish attached, from Disney/Walmart.🤣😂🤣😂

The muffled sound of your mic made listening harder. Great information, guys, especially about the line, which has been my experience so far, too. A few good Mono lines and you are set; that and some good braid. Fluoro doesn't impress me for anything. I also agree that the rod, line and reel are in that order of importance when it comes strictly to hooking up fish.

I would like to see some smaller mono lines tested for visually as well like 10lb mono. You can catch big fish on it as well

I use Yozuri Hybrid line for my leader sometimes (left over from filling my conventional reels). It's a mix of nylon/flourocarbon. 20# for $11/600yds. The Ande leader line # for # is way thicker so it'll have better abrasion resistance but you can go 30# Yorzuri for about the same diameter. Also, for GT fishing, I use straight 80# mono for leader, not leader line but main line - Maxima. I landed a bunch of large GTs on it - no issue. My point is, you can use most any mono if you have to. However for light game 4# to 10#, I still use flouro leader - it's cheap enough. You're not gonna get rich saving money on leader line.

Berkley Vanish 100% Fluoro 20lb - just purchased 250yards $11 If you're going to be rubbing up on very dangerous things maybe go to 30. Put out 10 lines or more (I have) all identical except Fluoro and Mono as leader) you will get hit on the Fluoro more than 80 percent more consistently.

@@r.k862 I've been using the current model BG for I whould guess about 4 or 5 years. The Fuego LT only 1 year. I've had zero trouble with either but I'm the guy who religiously washes my reels after each use in salt water and knows what each reel is designed to be used for. If I'm going off shore jigging or grabbing a 7' MH rod for site casting dolphin I'm not putting the Fuego on it spooled with 40lb braid. I'm 53 yrs old, been fishing my entire life and am a bit of a reel, rod, lure addict. I've fished farm ponds, inland lakes, Great Lakes salmon, backwater reds, trout, snook and Florida Keys Tarpon many times. I've used many, many reels. Having said that, I've never found the need to spend more than say around $140 for any reel. After all this time and reels used some of my favorites are Daiwa, Penn Battle II, certain Okuma and the work horse, Fin-Nor Lethal.

If you'd ask me about a 4 piece travel rod for inshore salt water or any fresh water, I'd say Fenwick HMG, St.Croix or Okuma. In that order. I've traveled with both from IL to Florida for the past 12 years and the HMG is just a fantastic rod. Hence....the reason I would love to hear Salt Strong guys opinion on it.

Thanks again (from the Netherlands) for another great video. I think fluorocarbon line was a solution to an industry problem - expensive braid pushed nylon mono out and 'invisible leaders' was a way of replacing mono end tackle rigs. Awesome channel. I need better rods to match my fancy reels!

Okuma reels fill the bill for me. Fine performance for the money. Epixor's are definitely the best budget reel. The new ITX models have a spec-sheet, and price tag, that's a game changer.

With the leader talk I love that you test the abrasion of both. I like flourocarbon due to it's stiff nature. Do you believe the performance in that area makes a case to stay with flouro?

Monofilament is stronger in nearly every test we've conducted

Mono has worked for me, 40 years, always catch fish. And I use my fresh water lures in saltwater and vice versa. For live bait, design the rig to fit the conditions, learn your knots and save a ton of money.

I have a spinfisher 5500 I looking for a new rod to pair with it I've been looking at the St Croix Mojo inshore I fish in New England for mostly striper, tautog, Seabass & Blue fish what is your opinion on this setup?

Probably too late to help but I kayak fish southern NE salt inshore. Have the previous generation mojo medium 7 and pair it with a fuego 3k or spinfisher vi 2500 depending on wave height and splash effect. The mojo is 4.7 ounces and found heavier bigger reels to unbalance it. With the fuego it’s 13.5 oz for the whole combo. Heck I only use max 4K spinfisher on my 9’ shore rod. Also there is a lot of durability reviews /concerns about the newest mojo, triumph inshore May be safer. Good luck

I think shimano and st croix make great rods, I’d stay away from ugly stick and g loomis is overrated and over priced imo

When I see the podcast/videos in canals - looks like the daiwa certate is what is being used a $500 reel? Maybe the $200 bg mq? I have been way to busy to watch all these super long videos without much concise information maybe I missed what exact reel is in those.

Combo kits- yeah, even Bass Pro shops will do that to you!
