My number 1 choice is the Ruger Old Army revolver. I purchased my first one in 1974. It was in blue finish and then in 1978 I upgraded to a stainless steel model and I have never regretted getting either of them. It is big, heavy and accurate. If you are so inclined you can fill it to the brim with powder and it makes a powerful hunting arm too. I love it. My #2 would be the 1851 Navy London model. It is elegant to look at and a lot of fun to shoot. Lastly, my #3 would be the 1860 Army. It is a beautiful gun and although it is more expensive to shoot than the 1851, it is also a lot of fun. The Remington guns did not make my list because they do not feel as nice in my hands as the Colt guns do.

My 3 favorite black powder revolvers are, 1- Remington 1858 Army, 2- 1858 Remington Navy and 3- Colt 1860 Army. I picked the Remingtons because they are so easy to swap cylinders. I have conversions cylinders for both and they both hit pretty close to point of aim. A close runner up to the 1860 Army is my J.H.Dance and Brothers revolver.

I picked up an 1860 Army last summer and love it. I wanted to go for a Walker, but Dustin’s videos talked me out of getting a Walker as my first cap and ball. I’m very glad I went with the 1860, but plan on getting the Walker sometime soon.

I love the 1851 Navy. Dustin you were instrumental in leading i to this hobby. I now have nine revolvers and two flintlocks. I make my own paper cartridges with your kit, cast my own projectiles, make my own wads work on them myself. Thank you for your videos. I started with a London precisely as you advised. Personally, my favorite is a Remington 1858 by Uberti.

I like my Uberti 1851 enough that I am currently working on getting a german silver front sight blade installed, just like the one that duelist1954 has. The original sight fell off at the range and I figured that I would do what Mike did by installing a better sight that was actually an original add-on option offered by colt back in the day.

Dustin, we must be related somehow! Your top three are exactly my top three in the same order! The 1851 Navy is by far my favorite, though. I own four of them and I try to shoot them whenever I get a chance! A close fourth is the 1858 Remington NMA (it got pushed toi that slot by the carbine). I have to admit that I love all the replicas I own (and I have 27 of them in total of all types). I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the great work!

Ok.. finally did some benchrest 30 yard groups with 1860...1851 (both Colt clones) and 1858 Remington ... only the 1851 was 36 caliber.. The thing they all had in common was that all of the cylinders were bored/honed out to about bore size and used oversize balls. The 44's used .457 balls in .453 cylinders and the .36 used .380 balls in .376 cylinders. Originally all of these guns had way undersize cylinders. The Remington performed the best with its undersize chambers/cylinders with groups of about 6" at 30 yards The Colt clones did worse with maybe 8" groups This time with the bored out cylinders and larger balls we were getting groups in the 3-4" range even tho it was a tad windy. often we would get 3 rounds touching. Normally I like to test one thing at a time but in this case I was also testing paper cartridges.. both made from his GOTW kit and my own style. All the paper ones went off. The 44's were hand rolled and even had a wad between powder and ball but required that I use Pyrodex pellets. They were still easy to load. All in all it made all of those guns 'my favorites'

This was deleted so I will try to do over on this over. Several years ago I was short of cash. I had a old army ruger. It was in satin steel. I sold it for some much needed cash. This I regretted. Then I & they were going to stopped making them. I went down to a gun store in Derry NH. I asked the owner if he could get one for me. He chuckled & sad it was out of production. I put $400.00 bucks on his counter & asked if he could get one. He found out the machines were still there but not running. Then a week or two called me & he I might get one. When it came it had a satin finish. This looked grate. I had to come up with some more cash but i was grateful & I felt very luckily. I wont make the mistake of selling this one.

I own quite a few cap and ball revovers, and enjoy shooting all of them. My concern at the moment is lack of availability of percussion caps. I haven't seen any supply in local stores going on four years now. Recently, I managed to get some RWS caps online but it was a painful purchase at 25 cents/cap. Ouch! Keep wondering what happened to Remington and CCI. It is hard to get a straight answer from them when supplies might be coming back. Makes one wonder if this shortage will ever pass and if the days of affordable percussion caps are over. Thanks for your videos.

Well do not know if I posted my top three cap and ball picks, but here it goes as one of them is movie related and that I own. #3: 1858 Remington new model army. (Movie related!) #2: 1860 Army Colt .44 #1: Colt Walker!! The Walker has several reasons for being at #1 place, the two biggest reasons are that 1: I am a Native Texan, and 2: I’ve worked in law enforcement (private sector). 3: I like it when I can take those long shots reliably, and it’s why I have a love for rifles especially black powder long rifles.

My favorite black powders are... 1 - 1858 Remington Buffalo/Army 2 - Colt Walker 3 - 1862 Colt Pocket Navy I've got conversion cylinders for the first two but I've only ever shot the third. I do have a Dragoon, something I like to show people who are into guns and blackpowders or maybe if I'm just watching True Grit and having to grit my teeth every time they call that Walker a Dragoon. People are like, why are you so upset over such a small detail and I'm like, let me show you. They catch on quick that there's a real difference between those two guns.

For me, and as with you my number one is the 1851 Navy as well, but for different reasons. My hands are small and the Navy grip fits my hand. The 1860 is a great gun, but it is slightly heavier than the 1851 and the grip is large. My second pick is a fantasy gun concocted by me. I took the 1860 snub-nose birds head grip frame and a 44 cal. configured to look like an 1851. With the longer barrel on the bird's head grip frame, the balance is sweet. It might be a fantasy gun but it's really cool.

OMG, you included a Remington! You feeling alright Dustin? Anyways, your prejudice for that ‘51 is always evident. LOL. Well, firearms are like women … we chose what we like; and, everyone has different tastes. That is what makes this hobby/interest exciting! My choices are different (as expected). First love is the 1860 Army. Walkers and Dragoons have the 100% cool factor; but, too heavy to carry for extended times … so, (can’t believe I’m saying this) in 36 caliber (ugh), I’d go with an 1861 Navy (bet you saw that coming). AND, to push that 36 caliber (ugh)window … I’d throw in Sam’s own choice … the 1862 Pocket Police! I need to go take a nap now … you actually have me spouting 36 caliber. I’m exhausted! Great video as always. Appreciate you.

I like the 1851 Navy London too and it would be my # 1 pick however I have to admit I like the 1860 Army w/the 51/2" barrel a wee bit better. (Also because I have a .45 Colt Kirst cylinder conversion, and the new .45 acp Kirst cylinder) As you know with the Kirst conversions, one can switch back to percussion at any time.

I have over thirty percussion revolvers. Like you my favorite is without a doubt the 1851. I have a few variations of it, some historical and some not, different barrel lengths, etc. My pick of them is the original style with the square back trigger housing. My number two would be the 1860. I also have a few variations of it. Of them my pick is not historically accurate but it just shoots amazing. That is a 5 1/2 inch barrel with a fluted cylinder and my own style of front sight. My number three, a Uberti 1862 Pocket Navy. I just love everything about this little guy; the way it looks, the way it feels and the way it shoots.

Let's keep history alive. I love my 1858 Remington, but always seem to be shooting my 1860 army colt. Gotta agree, the navy colt is sharp. I think you can learn to shoot for alot less money and have fun doing it. If you want a conversation piece, others always are curious about cap and ball. And home defense. I usually have one around the house

I thought for sure one of your choices would have been a '60. Like you said in the video how you always talk about Colt over Remington, but i get it. The '51 is smaller and economical to shoot, especially today. The Walker is epically cool, no one can pass on that. I don't have a Rem carbine myself, but I've been thinking about it for quite a while. But my personal own list would have to include a NMA.

I would put uberti's 1858 remington as my top. I shoot cowboy action competitions, so I need revolvers that can shoot 60 rounds without cleaning, and preferably without cap jams. While the ruger new army is perfectly capable of that as well its so far from a historical cap and ball that I personally won't use them.

Coincidentally I only have 3 different revolvers... I would have to repeat your choice on the 1851 navy good compromise and just feels right. I have nickel plated all my BP revolvers so blue or brass is not an issue. I did leave the color case frame as is tho. The next would have to be my 1860 Army in 44 I have shot my buddies Remington tho and it would be a tossup The 1860 looks HUGE in nickel ... lastly is my 1849 pocket in 31 caliber... In nickel and color case it looks like jewelry LOL Thing is I can shoot #0 buck which is .320 and perfectly formed. and well... it takes like 10 grains of powder. so very cheap to shoot I havent actually shot it a lot so no idea on accuracy I do know I can't hit soda cans at 30 yards with it On accurcy... not sure if this would be useful but my 1851 is a Pietta and with all the polishing and such the front sight got loose. I figured it was pressed in but it is M3 metric threads. Soooo because these things shoot high...A good thing to do is use an M3 screw .. snip it off somewhere reasonable and bring a file. once you get the thing filed down to where it shoots POA you can either leave it or do something else but you will have a measurement from the top of the loading lever catch to the top of the new front sight/height But.. a black screw with threads exposed is pretty ugly. You can buy 3mm brass rod and a 3 mm die i used some 1/8 brazing rod close enough for brass. Whatever you do the screw will give you the height of sight you need. in fact if you take too much off you can back out the screw slightly to raise it.

I have 2 Uberti Navy’s. 1851 & 1861. I think they’re both Londons. I would like to get either an Army or a Walker next. Actually, I’d love to get some #10 caps. 😂

The 51 for sure. I thought there was no recoil with this. At least compared to 22 lr it seems nit to have any. Maybe I'm crazy but i couldnt feel it.

Odd enough, the monstrous 1847 Walker & the smith & Wesson XVR, side by side, are almost identical in size. Two completely different beasts, two dif companies, over 160 years apart.

My top 3 black powder revolvers, at number 3 the Griswold and Gunnison, it's a very reliable piece it fires true every time I fired it and it's really fun to shoot, at number two I would have to say the 1858 New Model Army Remington and 44 caliber, I like the cylinder change on it is very quick and effective veterans a black powder or even a converted Cowboy loads It's very effective and it's very quick to reload, my final pick is actually a tie between the Walker pistol, and the dance Brothers pistol they are both from Texas and they are both very reliable and very fun to shoot both can bring down any one of those big 44 caliber rounds

For functionality, the Ruger Old Army is the best, hands down. Of course, they enjoyed the advantage of over 100 years of experience and development in their design. For lore and presence, nothing beats the Colt Walker, or even a Dragoon. For aesthetics, it's more difficult, I'd go with the Remington Army, the Colt 1860 Army, or Colt 1861 Navy.

    3. Is the Remington new army model. 2. is the Remington carbine. And number 1. Is the Colt 1851 navy. If it’s good enough for Wild Bill Hicock and you then it’s good enough for me! I’m gonna buy a .38 spl conversion cylinder, I haven’t decided on the loading gate model or plain cylinder model… have you got any suggestions?

I personally like the Kirst with the loading gate. It does require more change to the gun though.

that's interesting you say the 51 navy is #1. I thought you'd say 1858 Remington since i've heard people say there is a mechanical/durability advantage over the 51 navy. I have the 44 not-51 navy, and a 3rd model Dragoon and I have been wanting to get another revolver soon. I sorta want a 58 Remington, or a Ruger Old Army...or an 1860 Army. lol Im torn

The Ruger old army is considered by many to be the best. I like the stainless Pietta 1858 Remington myself. The Ruger Old Army revolver is unusual in that, unlike most percussion revolvers on the market, it was not based on a historical design, but was a modification of Ruger's Blackhawk model, which was itself based upon the cartridge-firing Colt Peacemaker.[2] The Old Army revolver accordingly incorporates many modern design features, though employing antiquated black-powder component loading. This design was built around the Blackhawk, but it takes its styling cues from the Spiller and Burr cap and ball pistol. This is due to the frame being longer in front to accommodate the loading lever and pivot pin. Earlier models listed as .44 caliber, later as .45, but all use a .457” round balls or .454” conical bullets of pure lead.[3] Unlike the Blackhawk, the Old Army did not make use of Ruger's transfer bar safety; instead the revolver relied upon a series of safety notches between each chamber on the cylinder like some models of the remington/colt or other black powder revolvers of the mid-19th century had.[1] The revolver was tested by loading each chamber to capacity with Bullseye smokeless powder and a lead ball. While this might result in catastrophic failure in other firearms, the Old Army proved to be strong enough to handle the pressure.
