Informative video. Simple questions and simple to understand answers. It is important to note however that some of the answers don't apply if you live outside of the UK. In southern Ontario, Canada, where I live, the water temperature of most ponds in winter is 5 C at the bottom (dependent on depth) and 0 C (and ice covered) at the surface so running your pump can super chill the water having serious and often fatal impact on the koi. Heating a pond here, regardless of the method chosen is cost prohibitive to all but the wealthy. Treating the koi for parasites has also become quite a challenge in recent years with restrictions on many of the chemicals used in the past. Our main go to here is salt or PP making proper water quality a must if you want healthy koi. We face far more challenges here than in the UK but with care and proper advice from koi keepers such as you the hobby is an amazing one. Cheers.

Some good editing and effects work has gone into this video. It must have taken a long time to get right? The photo zoom you are using keeps it flowing. Thanks for filming

Another great video craig, it was reassuring to know about the black fly larvae problem which I started having last year. I did get in a panic about it at first as its not the most pleasant site to see the larvae and there pupae cases clinging to the bakki shower media and side walls. The flies are still present at this moment even though we are in January but seem to be coming into the nexus chamber from the pond, I think this is because I'm heated to 14.5c so there staying active but not breeding so no larvae to contend with. Any ideas about keeping the inside of the pipework clean of pupae cases in case they start to close up the diameter and reduce flow. If you could make a video about your gas heater set up, pipe work etc and what equipment is needed that would be much appreciated as I mentioned yesterday im definitely looking into that for next winter and use the ashp in summer as you do. Hi Andy You will always have an element of blackfly larvae and flys in a pond. Part of the hobby unfortunately. Just keep an eye on the pipework. Difficult thing to treat/clean to be honest. When they ade exposed its easy but within the pipework a different matter altogether. Large diameter gravity pipework i wouldnt bother but pump fed systems could use a bottle brush on the end of a flexible rod. Get rid of any ribbed pipe as they seem to cling on to the ridges more easily.

Unfortunately it’s probably just luck matey. Ive seen numerous pond keepers videos where their CCTV system has picked up heron attacks and the good old decoy heron is sitting in the background. Electric fences, netting, high jump guards or wire protection is the only way unfortunately.
