@@neme6ben Nah Not “Everything” don’t be blind by your love of the game One of the major negatives of Hollow the reward system in it unlike Metroid where in every corner you will explore you be rewarded with immediate missile pack or energy tank that will help you getting stronger it’s not the case in Hollow because some of the things you find are worthless until you know it’s purpose The pacing in Metroid Games (Super Fusin, Zero Mission, Dead) are better then all of the MetroidVanias including Hollow Knight And lastly how fast and flowed your movement is are better too in Metroid games Hollow knight is a good game but there are some negatives in it that prevent it from being perfect and it didn’t innovate much it lives and the shadows of Symphony and Super like most of the Metroidvania not a single game I have played from this genre break through or cracked the magic of the those two games or innovate something different from this formula

​@@TinkerGrapesymphony of the night literally has one of the worst balancing(literally just mindlessly bonk anything at a certain point, was still fun because of Alucard's slick animation), and the inverted castle was just not very fun to explore because it was literally a reskin to the normal castle with a twist being inverted, it was cool for like 20 minutes but the fact that it was as long as the first castle just made it very tedious Just can't think of anything that symphony did better for hollow knight mechanically speaking since we really can't judge about who has better music and art direction(which is pretty insane a ps1 game that started the genre can still somehow compete on some degree to the pinacle of the genre currently) But from combat, enemy variety, bosses, story, lore and most importantly level design I think hk sweeps any of the genre as far I can see your the one blinded by love here bud, no comments about super metroid though, I haven't finished the game yet(played fusion first and it was amazing, lot of people just keep saying super metroid is objectively better than fusion so i have high expectations)

No no, that's only half true, but the game credited with establishing the genre is from Castlevania which is the other half of the naming for the genre

HollowKnight is one of the best game I've ever played period. It's up there is the greatest games ever made imo

The classics are: castlevania: SOTN, super Metroid. The Contemporary are: hollow knight, Ori and the will of the whisps, Metroid dread.

Nice list! I truly enjoyed Iconoclast and Cave Story plus too!

I'm playing Prince of Persia right now and it's an amazing game. The combat mechanics are so fun and exploring the huge map is never boring.

After watching so many lists, I find this one to be the most accurate. Putting a few on my to-do's

What i like most on symphony of the night , hollowknight and some others is the : „surprise feeling „ if you evolve something so crazy new in the world … mirrored castle , extremely weird world mechanics , availability use .

Damn good list. Good job including Super Metroid, Dread and Hollow knight in the top 5. The Ori games never worked for me for some reason.. I’ll check them out again. I’d probably include a Castlevania from Nintendo DS like Order of Ecclesia, imo they’re some of the best and fun to play castlevanias made. Carrion was also short but excellent.

Oh, worth noting aboout Salt & Sanctuary is that the dev studio previously made The Dishwasher games as well as Charlie Murder. Both good games and you can see the overlap in combat design there.

A good list but as a metroid fan ill swap super metroid at no.2 and metroid dread no.1. But over all excellent list not in my favorite order but excellent list

Really glad to see Shantae and Grime on this list! Grime especially, i love that alien body horror world. Not many other worlds full of monsters where you also *play* as a clear monster that i can think of aside from Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Both have beautiful music too. Where it concerns Metroidvanias, i've only ever played Cookie Cutter, yet nonetheless i had a good time with that one! Awesomely animated lawless Cyberpunk Sci-Fi planet with creatures ranging from robot skeletons with afros to tentacle monsters born from space whale meat to Hindu demons and more. The maker of it hopes to support it in substantial ways for a long time to come.

extra recommendations: Flynn - son of crimson and outland. Really great games, I had a lot of fun with them and finished both.

Ori 2 and Dread are my personal favorites!

Guacameele, Ori, Hollow, Dread, and SOTN are top 5 for me. I'll let the audience argue the order.

Tails of Iron is one of the best games I've played, super underrated metroidvania that is top 3 after Ender Lillies and Hollow Knight

Just finished Ender Lilies and the game is awesome. I am really looking forward for the sequel

List starts off strong, between Afterimage, Astalon, and to a lesser extent, Guacamelee and Pirate's Curse.

If I had a list the mummy demastered and strider 2014 would have made my top ten. I love those games and the soundtrack on both of them is f fantastic

One of the most underrated metroidvanias that I hardly ever see on anyone's list is Itorah. It's a pretty solid game

What about The Last Faith?! This is great Metroidvania + 2D Souls-Like with atmosphere of Bloodborne. Cookie Cutter also looks interesting.

I’m glad aeterna noctis is in here... it’s a fantastic game only affected by reviewers who don’t understand the beauty of difficulty and skill-honing.

Guacamelee 2 should have been in top 5 along with Bloodstained, those 2 games are so amazing. Haven't tried metroid dread but seems better than hollow knight, prince of persia also looks really good gameplay wise and visually

Being a bigtime fan of the genre it saddens me to see people sleeping on F.I.S.T Forged In Shadow Torch. Its not on th3 level of HK/Ori 2/B2 but damn its better than damn near all the other indies

I loved that game. The music was really good in it too, same with the mummy demastered, an often over looked but fantastic MV. I don't see it mentioned often but if I were rating MV's on nostalgia factor it would be my #1. That games aesthetics and music brought me back to playing metroid as a kid on the NES

I've just got the PS Platinum for Hollow Knight and it was the first I've played. Ori will likely be my next until Silksong

@@ageup7493 lol. I think 8 bit - 16 bit switching is the great idea. And gameplay, dialogues and soundtrack in Messenger are brilliant, beating most of the game in that list

In my honest opinion Metroid dread is easily the best meteoidvania of all time

I think , prens of persia better than ender lilies, and new game nine sols could be top10

Number 1-2 highly deserve their positions. Hollow Knight is the best 🎉 however i’d see ori and the blind forest and blasphemous 1 on top 10. I reccomend you also Moonscars. Really good one.

I strongly recomend all of you F.I.S.T. Developed by a Chinese company, iirc, it is not so famous but a masterpiece, in my opinion. Happy to see Monsterboy included on the list! It's also less famous than other not-so-good metroidvanias like SaS or Ender Lilies (remember it's just my opinion!).

Metroid is not a Metroidvania, it's just Metroid. Look at the title it says Metroid. The game that started the term Metroidvania was Castlevania Symphony of the Night because it was so similar to a Metroid title.

Same thing happened to me. I'm a platformers fan I am a fan of Megaman X/Zero, Castlevania and Metroid. The biggest mistake was people telling me it's better than all of them. Boy was I disappointed.

Hollow knight is my favorite game of all time, but I can understand why people might not be a fan of it. I’ve played Metroid dread, Elden ring, Minecraft, dead cells, hades, and some other popular games but nothing really came close to hollow knight except for maybe Elden ring

Metroid is not a metroidvania. It’s Metroid. You also have to understand what metroidvania actually means than what people now think it means because you are creating a new misconception from an already existing one. The true meaning of metroidvania is ANY castlevania game since symphony of the night that plays like Metroid. I understand how the meaning change over the years to call games that play like metroid to be now called metroidvania style instead of metroid like. But please do not disrespect metroid by calling it metroidvania when it came first before all the clones.

Qua nessuno disprezza Metroid o castelvania mettendoli in cima alla classifica del genere che hanno dato vita. Sono dettagli. Avrebbe potuto togliere super Metroid e simpony of the night dalla classifica creando altrettanta polemica. Inutile polemica. Qua si apprezza un genere e si tirano le somme, si scopre qualcosa di nuovo e si condivide. I titoli che per me mancano alla lista sono pochi e se la giocano con altri in fondo alla lista.

Metroidvania is just a term used for games that are metroid-likes, doesn't matter if they don't have the "castlevania" part in it, the term transcended the games it originated from, you could say there's been metroidvanias before metroid existed even if that sounds paradoxical , in general metroid is considered a metroidvania because no really uses the term "metroidlike" its pretty redundant
