I had the unbelievable experience of jamming with Eric and Jimi in NYC for a couple hours. The NYPD broke it up, as was after midnight and my band's loft was a few doors down from a firehouse. We were keeping them awake. At that point, I thought they were equally incredible guitarists. Jimi was such a terrible loss.

I would say Alex Lifeson from Rush is the most underrated or even Johnny Marr from The Smiths..

He said, “I don’t know, ask Roy Clark.” And Douglas asked Hendrix: “What's it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?” Jimi then beautifully responded, “I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher”. I got both answers - we will just have to assume they were both great but Roy Clark was not a rock guitarist - maybe that’s the difference. Of course, Jimi Hendrix was no slouch himself.

I'm very lucky to have seen Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Al Di Meola. Bass players Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. The list goes on and it's hard to pick the best but most people agree Jimi Hendrix and for me Jimmy Page is my favorite

It's criminal that Jeff Beck is not here. He's on a different soundwave altogether. He is completely original and actually, he is too good for your silly lists!! EDIT Thank you for the likes. I wrote this several months ago, and now very recently Jeff has passed away.😪 I find it sad that all these youtube channels ignored him in their "best guitarist" or "most influential guitarist lists" but since he has died, have suddenly remembered him, making tributes!! Glen Campbell, Roy Clark and Vince Gill, Joe Walsh and Don Felder. Coming up with lead guitar melodies that define/make a song is a gift and incredible talent. Angus from AC/DC, Slash, and Brian May are also perfect examples.

I would name this as not the list of the best but a short list of world talanted musicians we can tell right now without thinking 😊

The fact Slash, John Frusciante and Angus Young, 3 extremely influential guitarist (and two of them they used in the intro) didn’t even make the cut is an absolute outrage.

Every one of these many You Tube lists are an opinion of so-m-eone, but what I love is on all of them I enjoy so many performances from so many talented musicians. I can't pick just a small group for my own favorites. If I haven't heard someone in a while, some are new to me as well, I go out and load my spotify playlist and enjoy some great music I haven't heard in a long time for the most part.

That's gotta be before 1985 then, because The Sacred Heart tour was the last time all 12 semi trailers worth of stage props were used. It was an amazing time to be a teenage metalhead. Those concerts were fucking epic.

Just to put some perspective in numbers: according to RIAA: Santana have sold 43,5 million records ( in those numbers Woodstock live is excluded ) and Dire Straits 15 million!! Of course numbers doesn't dictate someone's personal taste!!!

The reality is that any list like this will never be agreed on by everyone. Everyone has their own taste and each musician has their own style and sound, so my answer to the question is always that they are each the best at what they do. One day Blackmore could be my favourite and another day it could be Page, or Gilmore, or Clapton or whoever I'm in the mood to listen to at the time. Everyone mentioned in the video and in the comments are all phenomenal musicians and all deserve respect.

I know. He is barely even a lead guitarist. Who ever talks about his solos? Yeah he has some good riffs, but I wouldn't even call him a great guitarist let alone one of the greatest, let alone greater than Clapton, that's just blasphemous!

You know all these guys are great in their own right. Each had something to offer, influenced people and they made a living at this. Interesting to note that most likely they could not copy each other because they had their own style. Maybe group this into categories - like blues, blues rock, jazz, acoustic, etc. It is still difficult though

Paul Rogers, Bad Co, is one of my favorites. His voice is so dynamic.

I believe that Slash should made this list for at least an honorable mention.

Top 20 most mainstream male guitarists. The more famous the more talented the guitarist.

Honorable mention Steve Rothery Marillion . Very few guitarists can ring emotion from the guitar like he can.

I'm very into music. I know most big bands from 60s through 2010s. I havent heard of like half of these.

As a fan of David Gilmour, I was shocked to see him 4th on this list. But, I am very pleased to see it. He is always number one in my heart, and ears lol

As a PF fan since 73 , I never really appreciated how great Gilmour is...I started isolating him about 20 years ago...Staggering comes to mind...The Outro's on Dogs or Have a cigar take my breath away...I place him on a pedestal shared with Steve Howe, Alex lifeson, Zappa, Tony Iommi, Brian May, Page...

Yeah David Gilmour might not be the best shredder ever or rocker that everyone expects. But what makes him so great is his style. I don't think anyone speaks through a guitar with such emotion like David does. His bends are out of this world. He is definitely one of the best.

For me the truest mark of a great guitarist is when you can instantly identify who’s playing no matter what guitar is being used or whether it’s that person’s own music or someone else’s. By that definition, David Gilmour is right at the top of the list. While he’s known for mostly playing Strats, David could play a spoon and still sound like himself. And whether it’s Pink Floyd, his solo work or as a session musician for someone else, you know immediately that it’s David Gilmour on guitar. Perfect example, No More Lonely Nights, by Paul McCartney.

We all know how The Monkees get written off as a 'fake band', but Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were both incredible guitarists...Mike went on to revolutionize Southern Rock (and invent MTV), and Peter was more classically trained, and put out some wonderful solo albums. And, while I notice George Harrison wasn't on this list, at least his son made it in the video (the kid playing behind Tom Petty in the Prince segment).

I think you’d actually have to break it into different decades of styles of music to separate them and give them their due respect and credit. Every fan has their favorite. Great job on the upload. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My high school guitar teacher who has a PhD jn guitar: “I can’t write like these guys but I can outplay any of them.” It’s true. The best guitar player of all time is probably some guy from Spain you have never heard of.

I disagree with the statement that there are genius unknown guitar players out there but for your guitar teacher to make the assumption that he/she can outplay ANY of the famous ones, I don't buy it. Jimmy Hendrix and the guitar were as one and great guitar players of that era and the current, look up to him. Then there is Joe Walsh. Just these two guys have reached Mastery level. For someone to outplay them is a rarity.

Gary Moore anyone?

The hallmark of a great guitarist is how well they affect you emotionally through their guitar playing. Yes, technicality is important however if there is not art, no emotional substance, then IMHO it doesn’t really matter. Moving you is key. This is why Mark Knopfler is easily my favourite guitarist and who I feel deserves the #1 spot. David Gilmore is close behind in #2 spot, Prince in #3, Stevie Ray Vaughan in #4 and Clapton #5. Remember that music is very subjective, personal and cultural so there really isn’t a wrong answer. Whoever moves you the most. Period.

Missing from this list; Steve Howe from Yes. He was voted Best Overall Guitarist five years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine.

JEFF BECK! I never expect to agree with any of these lists, but I was happy to see Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May and David Gilmour recognized. But how a list like this could completely ignore Jeff Beck is disgraceful.

I'm a Chilli 🌶 Fan as much as the next guy, but John (or the band for that matter) wasn't really known for their shredding ability. No one ever looks back on the history of best guitar players and thinks Chilli Peppers. Sorry man. Seeing the band live, I know they can jam but this list was reserved more for impact on music.

The most influential is Jimmy Page. A great innovator, his riffs and solos are often used by musicians in genres other than rock. He has been quoted as saying his guitar playing is all about emotion. I certainly feel his music.

Good list, but definitely missing Jeff Beck. Joe Walsh from James Gang days could also be on list. Hard to pick a top 20 though. Albert King?

Glen Campbell was one of the most versatile players ever. Eddie Van Halen wanted Alice Cooper to introduce him to Campbell for some pointers. Glen couldnt read music but was a true born 'play by ear' talent! He was a member of The Wrecking Crew' as well.

To me, Neal Schon is one of the most underestimated and underappreciated guitarists of all time. He can shred and can do acoustic. He was Santana''s protege.

I have to agree that this list is put together to get people riled up in the comments, because every single guitarist I know (and will ever meet) would say that Mark Knopfler should be waay higher than Billy Gibbons on such a list. Billy is impressive as a strictly blues-guitarist, but Mark is much more versatile and technical

What about George Harrison he put the mark for guitarists. Also he used other types of string instruments. Nobody’s has composed music like here comes the sin or something. Tom morello where is he? I am glad you put chuck berry and Paco de Lucia of course. Where is Tom morello and Andy summers?

Frank zappa number 1 for me, however David Gilmore's solo from time gets my spine tingling every time.

Hendrix, did 'All along the watchtower' made it a hit after it was already a hit, with Robert Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan, who wrote the song!! 😊

After the first 3 i understood this was a popularity contest. Tons of metal and blues guys would top this list

May isn't just a regular guitarist, he also has a degree on Astrophysics, and yep he does have a book about that. For information, astrophysics is a field in astronomy that understands the physics behind stuff.

An interviewer once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. Hendrix replied that he did not know and advised the interviewer to ask Rory Gallagher, who seems to be missing from this list.

Check out Jimi Hendrix 9 favourite guitar players.

Jimmy Page might not be the best technically ever but he was maybe the most influential and most definitely my favorite. What he created, and the shear amount of music he created as a composer and a guitarist is to this day unmatched and may never be.

Brian Jones died too young to show all he could do. On “Paint it Black” he commanded the sitar to his needs in that song for one. Others are David Bromberg who could make a guitar talk.
