Good picks. Palamedes looks crazy fun. I knew about it back in the day but I have still never played it. But I can still visualize the magazine ad for it in my mind. Also agreed on Mega Man 2 vs other Mega Man games. Good reasoning. I would have probably crammed Castlevania 3 in with Castlevania 1 because both are awesome. If you like Kung Fu, try the sequel called Vigilante on the TurboGrafx-16... or Master System but the TG-16 version is better.

Krazy Kreatures is a fun game. It's also very intense at the later stages. The first Tetris for the NES is also a memorable game with vivid graphics and good music. Castlevania is another fun game and this game has secrets there are bonus grabs that can give you a lot of points. Contra and Super C are good games. Mega Man 2 is always my favorite in the Mega Man series. Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! is also a very funny game. Duck Tales has 3 endings. So many nostalgic memories, and so many fun games. So many timeless classic NES games.

Agree with #1 so hard. I think I was 5 years old when my dad got an NES and zelda, and pulling out that brand new gold cartridge and imagining all the treasures inspired so much wonder. The cartridge itself felt like a legendary treasure. For me, this game has to be the height of nostalgia

My mom worked at a game rental" only" place when I was a kid in 1989 and it had a section where you could test the games before you rented them it was awesome

I wish they had that option at my local stores. It’s was rent it & If was good then great! If it sucked, then I’m stewing in disappointment as I waited another week to rent something else fun. That just may be the reason I haven’t played many the James reviewed vent latent rages. I just had so much fun with those.

That's incredible! So many games on the NES were garbage. Worse, was Nintendos hatred of rental market and pushing for games to more or less put copy protection in game via codes on manual or box. Metal gear was impossible without the code...

Zelda 1 was my favorite game growing up. my best friend in elementary school and I beat it over a few weeks after getting it and had a blast. I still go back and play it every few years, I typically play the original cart on the NES on a CRT. gotta keep it like it was for best results.

I love Jackyl for NES, it was one game that most of my friends had never heard of. I used to rent it from the little mom and pop stores around town. It is a very fun game, especially the two player mode. most people overlook this little gem.

I'm glad you put both Contra and Super C in the same slot. They're both very well deserving of it! It's almost like dlc 20 years before it became a staple of gaming.

Everyone always praises Capcom, but no one ever mentions Little Nemo the Dream Master. Am I the only one that freaking LOVED that game? It's so good! Super underrated.

I agree. It's been a hell of a ride. So glad I grew up through all those generations. Started for me with Atari 2600 in 1982.

I'm kind of surprised that with DuckTales you didn't mention the golf swing cane mechanic. I loved that along with the pogo cane. It's very SMB2-ish because you're able to use your environment as a weapon.

I have to say, some of these games really seem to push the NES to the absolute limit. Kirby's Dreamland looks absolutely gorgeous, as does Mario 3. If you looked from far away, they could easily be mistaken for an SNES game with their nice visuals and very nice animation.

Oh my god! Zelda 2 came out when I was 9 years old and i spent more hours playing that game than any other game on the NES. Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 were also awesome.

Please do SNES next !

Even today , it's impossible to play more recent Kirby game and not have a smile on your face. Happy 25th to the most badass pink ball ever.

Finally some love for the original TMNT game...as difficult as it was it was always one of my favourites as a kid, never got the hate for it

man those kirby's adventure graphics are still impressive today!

Every time I watch one of these vids, I hold out a small bit of hope that some the original teams behind these games see the vids and feel the love. Subbed because of this one.

The problem was Vince Perri ripped off investors and hired programmers still in college. Look up the docu on it, it's pretty good.

I always say that the Mega Man 2 soundtrack is the soundtrack of my youth. Glad you had Bucky O’hare and Guardian Legend on the list. Darkwing Duck was equally as good as Ducktales imo. Fun list! Well done

Bucky O'Hare has all the makings of a classic but it got released a bit too late. For Tetris the go-to version is the Gameboy one.

I know I am late but as someone who owns both the Gameboy and NES versions of tetris I personally prefer the NES Version over the gameboy version (even know the gameboy version is the better version) Im not saying I don't like the gameboy version, it is easily the best gameboy game in my opinion, everything about it is great especially the classic music. I know everyone has already said this but tetris is game that will never ever age. sorry for the long and late comment :)

Kirby's Adventure was my first game ever at 4 years old on NES, and it still remains my favorite of all time. I'll always have a soft spot for the pink vacuum. Lolo was another game me and my younger brother played a ton, and was infuriatingly tough while being rewarding.

I love Kirbys Adventure one of my Top 5 games for sure. I remember playing it everyday I could as a kid still own all these games today. Like TMNT, Deju Vu, all 3 Mario Bros, Bump & Jump, Adventure Island and tons more. I collect and play them all the time. Same with Sega Genesis and SNES.

My favorites: Star Tropics, Blaster Master, Crystalis, Lolo series, Zelda, Mario 3, Mega Man 4, Doctor Mario.

Good picks! Games like Solomon's Key and Adventures of Lolo are totally underrated and unknown classics. There's so much depth, and you feel like a pimp when you finally solve a tough level.

How is Battletoads not on anyone's top list? The best music, amazing graphics, super challenging, amazing side scroller, and the hover bike level is insane.

I grew up on NES and would put LoZ, Metroid, and Final Fantasy 1 in my top three. Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Mega Man 2, and Maniac Mansion would my next tier of favs. Also, much love for Spelunker, an awesome, under the radar title.

Some of my favs for the NES was Legacy of The Wizzard, Shadowgate, Uninvited, and Tombs and Treasure. Yes, I have bad tastes in games.

James and Mike have been getting me through some pretty dark times lately tbh, thank you.

I remember buying Super Mario Advance 4 (Super Mario Bros. 3) off of ebay for the GBA, and I brought it over to a friend's house, and we took turns playing on the Co-Op mode, and it was so cool taking turns! We had other games such as Minecraft and Battlefront available, but very few games can beat things like SMB3 and MM9!

My personal 10 (Only put on 1 Mega Man game. It would have dominated half the list if I didnt) 10: Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar (Despite it being a very inferior port of the original) 9: Nightmare on Elm Street 8: Super C 7: Dragon Warrior 2 6: Crystalis 5: Ninaj Gaiden 2 Dark Sword of Chaos 4: Wizards and Warriors 3: Final Fantasy 2: Mega Man 3 1: Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse

I love the fact that you used The Guardian Legend music at the beginning. That is a fun game.

Zelda 2 was SOOOO awesome! I loved how on the world map it would be an above view like the original, then when you went into a town it changed to side scroll. It was like "3-D" before 3-D....sort of.....it added a whole new depth to the game. Loved it loved it loved it! Playing it was like being addicted to a drug!

I like this game, its alot of fun, but I wouldn't rank it my top 10 and would understand why most people don't like it and would even prefer crazy castle over it.

Just refinished Zelda II. It is my second favorite in the series!

Because Castlevania 3 has the best elements of all of the Castlevanias on the NES combined, and it added more playable characters. It's also the hardest one. It's a more fun challenge. It has more depth to it than the other 2, although Simon's Quest had some depth to it also.

Good picks. One of my favorites was THE FLYING WARRIORS was one of my favorites. RPG, adventure and fighting all in one game.

Final Fantasy is great. Also, there was a game on the NES that was named Anticipation. It's sort of like a party game. You can have up to four players. You can play it single-player as well, but it was fun to try to beat your friends.

This was a really enjoyable watch and listen. You backed up each game with facts and experiences, and the delivery was really, really strong. NES is, indeed, a tough console to narrow down only 20 games for a favorites list. The neat thing is that no two lists will be exactly alike. That speaks volumes about the variety of games that were developed for the NES, and how strong a platform it remains to this day. Here's hoping you have time to tackle another console with a Top 20 list in the future, and thanks for all you do for this channel.

Great video. Your delivery and presentation are flawless. I'm definitely inspired to try a couple of titles I overlooked before, and give a couple of others another chance.

Mega Man 2's music is so memorable that there is a band that dedicated themselves to playing intense versions of the songs.

A solid list, but it's hard to get over the lack of Metroid on it. Many of us had the map in our head, after playing through it a time or two.

This is a good list! I’d personally agree with Zelda being no.1. Also, I would like to see top 20 SNES games too

Super Tecmo Bowl is my favorite NES game of all-time. It's such a revolutionary game, way ahead of its time!

MIKE! I would like to know what you think of Castlequest for the NES as it seems you like these puzzle/action games. I got addicted to this when I borrowed from a friend when I was younger, it's fairly difficult.

Kid Icarus may be my favorite ATM. Star Tropics & Faxanadu up there. Totally agree on Duck Tales. Love Shadowgate, Deja Vu, & Uninvited.

Omg, dude I owe you so much for this video. Solomon’s Key. I’ve been trying to find this game for years. I played it a lot as a kid but over the years I forgot what it was called and have asked but never been able to track it down. You rock. You just solved one of my all time mind puzzle wtf was that memories.

Have you guys ever played Crystalis? It's so good, one of the most underrated games of all time.

Have to agree with #1. Up there as one of my all time greats; and not just on the NES. Though I will say Mega Man 3 > Mega Man 2. Mega slide and Rush!

Great list of games. My top 4 favorites are: 1. Super Mario Bros 3 2. Punch Out!! -featuring Mr. Dream- 3. Batman - Return of the Joker 4. Battletoads (never finished it but had a lot of fun playing it with friends)

I was thrilled that you included Shadowgate in your honorable mentions. I loved that game. Not until MYST for the PC had I ever played a point and click game that I became so immersed in. The exploring and puzzle solving was so much fun. I wish Shadowgate would get a reboot for consoles and PC!

Mike has a talent for beating all these old NES games.

I was an awesome player as a kid. Ironically had more patience then. I guess the ability save pretty much anytime killed the focus and trial & error. The Souls series brought real challenge and sense of reward back.

He's from the old school. We were just conditioned to play these tough games back then. Mike just never stopped playing them and continued honing his skills till this very day. But games like Mega Man and Castlevania that everyone touts as being "difficult" today were really not thought of that way back then. I was 9, and I could beat those games easily (not Castlevania 3, though...ugh).

Loved too, one of the best games for the NES.

Bomberman II is my favorite NES game. It has a lot more than what the original had. With the inclusion of a 2 and 3 player battle game.

Hitting us with The Guardian Legend menu/opening level music... well done!

Mike has really came into his own lately. Good for him.

Metroid, Kid Icarus, Wrecking Crew, Little Samson, Metal Gear is on my list.

Lilltroll Metal Gear was originally released for the MSX, and that version has much better controls, and also the classic "Theme Of Tara" track.

Back in the day, when we played Mario 3 together, we still counted one life as one turn. Nobody ever let someone keep playing when they died. PERIOD. That was grounds for fighting.

Fantastic! Mixing difficulty and enjoyment throughout. Have you played Shatter Hand? I think it would be up the alley of you're favorites.

For me, I have to include Maniac Mansion as one of my all time favorite NES games.

YES, im guessing the title screen for guardian legend is an honorable mention. Granted its essentially legend of zelda in space minus the puzzles, it was quite satisfying to beat. Many fights against that damn eyeball dropping the beams on no health ups the intensity. Top quality soundtrack to boot

Tengen Tetris was pretty damn good. CV 3 is my favorite in the series Kid Icarus gets no love... huh...

Kid Icarus is so underrated. It has that creepy Metroid feel, but with Greek mythology. I've always woneerd what could have happened if it was more poplular and became a big francheise. Imagine a Mario type 3D platformer but with creepier graphics and soundtrack where every boss-stage is a giant Zelda-type maze in a greek temple filled with puzzles.

I love you, Mike!! Been following AVGN videos since the start, and you are my favorite. Great list. Mine would have included Double Dragon 2. But now I feel I should try Solomon's Key.

You know I kinda feel dumb now. I've beaten Mega Man 2 on a zero damage run, but it never occurred to me that I could have used Bubble Lead to detect false platforms. I just went straight from memory, and let me tell you, after a beer or two, pinpoint memory can be... slightly skewed.

I miss vids like this Mike used to make. Hope he comes back 😔
