You know what the saddest thing is, Disney did actually had high hops for more Treasure Planet projects with a TV series and a sequel were Jim Hawkins has love interest named Kate, teaming up with Long John Silver to stop Ironbeard, who is the main antagonist of the sequel, and he was going to be voiced by Willem Dafoe. Unfortunately, when they saw the first movie's failure at the box office, those plans were ultimately left buried.

I agree with franchise fatigue and higher ticket prices, but "identity politics" is BS dog whistle for "too much "other people" representation". Every Disney product, particularly since its 90s renaissance hits on identity politics/wider range of representation. It's a Small World, and all. And many many flops on this list outside of 2023 had no overt "identity politics" angles. While quite a few hits (like Encanto, animated Mulan, etc) were purely "identity politics" and/or specifically cultural flicks. I'm almost shocked you didn't say "woke" like most ppl do, lol. Disney made money hand over fist on stories they stole from others. Cinderella, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Tangled, The Lion King, I could go on, were other people's ideas, books, and characters that Disney "perfected" and made family friendly with happy endings. Then they procured Marvel, Star Wars, and other IPs that already had lore and followers. When it came time to produce original content, results varied greatly. When they went back to the tried & true remake well, much like recycled water, no one's falling over themselves to partake. Not only is there franchise fatigue but also choice paralysis. With the ridiculous number of subscription platforms with "must see" titles and finite number of hours in a day, how much we really want but can't find the time to watch a film doesn't quantity in box office or whatever numbers these companies use to count views.

One of my favorite Live-Action Disney movies of all time is Newsies. I first saw it as a Broadway Show when I was a kid and when I found out it was a movie, watched it. I LOVED IT! I get why it failed at the time but I have always loved it and always enjoy re-watching it. Also as a kid I loved the Black Cauldron and it was one of the most watched for me growing up. My mom bought it when it came out on VHS in 1997.

Biggest confusing thing with Lightyear is....we already SAW the "actual" Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 2, in the opening sequence. And it looks so different. Just look at how Zurg appears there and how he is in Lightyear. Honestly, as impossible as it is, I think it would have been MUCH better to just have a very-late reboot of the "Of Star Command" cartoon.
