From this NHK doc I read they supposedly have not been as prevalent and aren't established anymore, and the sentiment is repeated across several would be experts and the WSJ sources several different Japanese pundits. But almost EVERY time I think about what I read it always comes to mind "isn't that exactly what they would want tho" ? I mean I might be just feeding the legend but I don't see why they would be defunct all of a sudden. Especially when the conditions are almost nothing but perfect for organized criminal actions

Promotion ls in Japan used to have entire sections foped off for Yakuza members because they were known to attend wrestling events. Foreign wrestlers were told to stay away from those sections if they didn't want to start trouble.

It's like alcohol and weed, turn it legal so there's no crime and paperwork is legit. Have your high status members be in high status corporate and governmental positions, and have all muscle work as actual security and insurance. Anyone trying to enter the market is automatically taken down both legally in court and by institutions and a crap ton of confusing regulations and paperwork you made.

They forgot to mention that the Sicilian Mafia has been so violent and bloodthirsty that they manage to murder many policeman, judges, priest and ordinary people that were trying to take a stand in the 80s and 90s, embarking in a conflict with the Italian government that they almost won. They were subject of of the greatest and biggest trial in the history of crime in Palermo. Plus through that trial was crucial for the understanding of how a crime organisation worked. Since before that, the general feeling was that the Mafia was simply a group of few people.

One day, many years ago, my mother's aunt (an 80 something year old lady) once stared down & denied entry to her home to members of the Hell's Angels who were chasing down a guy marked for death who ran into her house for sanctuary.

I had two aunts who ran around with the Hell's Angels for many years. My one aunt (who died from colon cancer three years ago) almost married the one Hell's Angel she was dating. My second aunt (who is battling emphysema) got pregnant with the Hell's Angel she was dating. Unfortunately, she miscarried. But, the stories they would tell me about the Hell's Angels was definitely something to behold. They were good to you unless you betrayed them. That's when they'd go after you and your family.

I think they forgot about Ndrangheta which is probably the most powerful but if you add them together with cosa nostra they are definitely number 1. Edit: I know they are not allies but for international people Sicily and Calabria seem close.
