Ive done the zip line between Spain and Portugal. Its fantastic. There is also a time zone difference between the two. So you get off the zip line 58 minutes earlier than when you got on it! Look up Limite Zero to do it. Its well worth it, and there is a little boat that takes you back across to Spain. Because both countries are in Schengen you don't need your passport.

Another fun border is the Finland-Sweden border, specifically on the island of Märket, which is only 8.2 acres in size (making it the smallest sea island shared by two countries). The border used to be just a straight line, but in 1885 Finland built a lighthouse on the highest point of the island, which happened to be on the Swedish side. So in 1985 the border was changed to make the lighthouse grounds Finnish territory and make an equal area of the (formerly) Finnish side Swedish territory, meaning there would be no net change in either country's land area. However, the coastline ownership had to be kept the same as before so as not to affect fishing rights, so the border now makes an elongated 'S' shape in the middle of the island. Just to make it more interesting, the Swedish half is also divided between two counties (Uppsala and Stockholm).

For Hispaniola, you comment how slavery can ravage a landscape and caused the disparity in the difference between Haiti and DR, but paradoxically Haitian slaves threw out its colonial masters in 1803 and has fared less well than DR, which gained indepenence under primarily the rule of the descendants of their previous colonial masters. Albeit, the indigenous Taino might have preferred neither came to the island, the side more heavily influenced/managed by Europeans has outperformed the other.

As a result the restitution proposal has accrued interest so much so that French governments need to pay 3 times the proposed amount. Too sad😢😢😢

I actually did the Portugal-Spain zipline border crossing when I was holidaying in the Algarve back in 2016, and it's definitely worth doing if you're in the area. It was a lot faster and steeper than I anticipated, but definitely super fun, and a unique way to cross a border. And funnily enough, when I was back in Portugal in 2021, I went to Spain & back in a much more relaxed manner, a simple ferry across the river border :))

The most interesting part about the Chile-Argentinian border isn't even mentioned here: for a distance of about 65km the border is undefined! As it crosses the ice fields south of El Chalten there is no border drawn on the map, because it is not defined where the border should run exactly in this region. I only know of one such place in the world where there is no dispute, but the border is just undefined.

This is due to Chile's victory in the war of the Pacific between 1878-1884 where those territories were captured. Also, Bolivia still salty to this day about losing the sovereignty and access to the sea.

In the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg you can find 3 of those 3-way-borders. In the north you have a small pole with the marks of Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. In the south it's Germany, France and Luxembourg and on the south-western corner you have Belgium, France and Luxembourg. In the north kids use tu run around the pole to cross as many as possible borders in a minute. In the south-western corner you have to pass belgian territory to reach France after some hundred meters, but only by driving. If you are pedestrian you can take the direct way. At the village of Martelange on the westside of the Grand-Duchy you can find a bar with a dividing line. It's the border between Belgium and Luxembourg. On the belgian side Drinks and food are much more expensive then on the luxembourgish side. There is also a gas station with different prices on the pumps. You have to look carefully witch side you choose!

There are even weirder stretches of the US/Canada border in my view. Take take the Alaskan village of Hyder, for example. At a glance, there's nothing odd about Hyder, it's the only village in the southern half of Alaska's panhandle connected to the outside world by road. The weird part is where those roads lead. They don't lead to anywhere in Alaska, instead reaching Canada. Even weirder, when traveling by sea plane from Hyder to other parts of Alaska, you need a passport, the only example where travelers need a passport for a domestic flight. Another weird part of the border is the Northwest Angle, Minnesota. The angle is located on the North Western corner of the Lake of the Woods. To find the reason why, we need to look at the Peace Treaty that was signed in Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. The border between the US and what was at the time British Controlled Canada, was supposed to pass through the Lake of the Woods at a North West Angle (hence the name). Much like Point Roberts, they had no accurate maps of the lake when drawing the border and inadvertently created a weird bump in the border. Home to roughly 60 people, the Angle is strange in another sense. While it has basic facilities for Elementary School children, namely a one room school house, there's no room for older children, they have to border hop. They board a school bus before dawn, cross two International Borders, then get dropped off at the High School they attend in the main part of Minnesota.

I have to agree with the narrator that it's food that is the real ambassador(s) between us all (so to speak). I used to work for a laboratory that had employees from literally all over the world. We'd have monthly potlucks where each person, or group if there was more than one representative from a country, would bring a dish from their country. Of the seven of us out of 47 employees who were US born and bred, we would bring dishes that represented where we came from. It was really cool and a great way to learn more about Eritrea, Ethiopia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Some of the dishes, flavors, and cooking techniques are things I enjoy to this day because of those potlucks.

Then you get into co-enclaves, where two side-by-side entities are surrounded by another, larger entity so they each border only each other and the larger surrounding one. The most famous is sub-national - Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, California, bordering each other directly (and on Sunset Boulevard quite noticeably with urban density along the Sunset Strip in WH and expensive low-rise suburbia in BH) but together surrounded by the City of Los Angeles.

If Colonialism was the cause of Haiti's poverty, try explaining why Dominican Republic and the rest of the caribbean islands, many with much less resources have prospered? Until Haiti and the self-serving NGO's STOP blaming colonialism they will NEVER end poverty. It's the continuously corrupt governments, no matter how many times they change that put personal wealth over the island's severe need for economic development & education. And the need for uncorrupt police force that can bring civility to foster needed security for businesses to prosper, until then, the poverty cycle will continue!

If someone’s house is half in Belgium and half in the Netherlands how do they do the taxes? Or split the cost of buying a house(which countries broker would you use and were would the taxes go)? What about utilities? Also if there is a crime there how does that work if the body is half on one side and half on the other(laying on both sides), who would have jurisdiction? Seriously curious

for taxes they came up with an easy solution, if your front door is in Belgium you also fall under Belgian law. So you also pay your taxes to Belgium. Police forces of Belgium and the Netherlands have a long history of cooperation with each other. And the European Union made it even easier with the shengen zone meaning we have open borders. I'm not an expert on the matter but I believe the cooperation makes it possible for both police forces to operate in the different county's. For instance if you have a car chase they don't stop the chase at the border. And as far as I can remember I've seen both county's work together on murder cases when necessary. for utility's I have no idea I don't live there, I can drive there in 20min. I'm going to guess that they share infrastructure, but pay they're bills to company's situated in the country where the front door is. It does develop some funny situations. You see in the Netherlands they're kinda fireworks crazy, specially with new year. And a few years ago with covid the Dutch government made a temporary ban on selling fireworks. So Baarle Nassau/Hertog became a fireworks hotspot for the Dutch as Belgian shops where free to sell fireworks. Even in the town where I live. It was the first time in my life I've seen a longer waiting cue at the gardener/hobby shop then at the baker across the street.

Indeed, it's an unwritten rule that works. And if the front door is on the border (which is the case for one house), they can chose to which country they belong. There are no problems (sad that this isn't everywhere the case in the world). Pretty recently, due to a river that was straightened, there were a sort of enclaves (which gave problems for law enforcement, mostly due to drug, illegal parties and waste dumping, the police had to cross each time a river), so Belgium and the Netherlands decided to exchange some territory. Furthermore, Belgium and Dutch police, military, emergency services, ... work very closely together, like this summer there were some problems with Dutch people in a Belgian city, so the Dutch police helped the Belgian police to patrol. Also in the border regions of Belgium and the Netherlands there are sometimes mixed patrols. A lot of countries could learn something from Belgium and the Netherlands.

Surely the DMZ between The Republic of Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea must be up there in any list of 'Most Unusual Borders'? It's like the Cyprus border on steroids. The two nations are still technically at war, yet as a tourist on a guided visit from either side you can visit the blue huts straddling the line at Panmunjom - strictly when visitors from the 'other' side are not visiting! Here you 'cross' into the other country - the only place on the entire DMZ where this border crossing is possible without sparking an international incident and a high risk of being shot - simply by walking around a table. There's no border formalities, because you don't leave the building and in a small, sealed-off observation booth at either end of the room, two armed soldiers from the 'other side' silently watch through windows to make sure you don't try. Then there's the two border villages with the HUGE flagpoles and the high probability that the on the DPRK side this is a Potemkin village, which is entirely uninhabited. Almost as strange is the Yalu River border between Dandong, China and Sinuiju, DPRK, with the Chinese side downtown looking like a modern, illuminated skyscraper city and the DPRK side looking like a mostly run-down small, low-rise town, often in the dark as it is plagued by power shortages. The 'Broken Bridge' is a tourist attraction accessible from the Chinese side, where you can walk halfway across the river and peer at the DPRK from the point where the bridge was bombed in the war and ceases to exist. From here you can see the convoy of trucks and the odd train snaking slowly across the old 'Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge' the inadequate and ageing structure between the two nations and an economic lifeline for the DPRK. There's also the vastly larger, modern 'New Yalu River Bridge' a few miles west towards the sea. It was built by 2014, but then everything stalled until 2019 and it wasn't connected to a road on the DPRK side. At time of writing the DPRK connecting road is now built, but the bridge still sits there totally idle, meaning the massive Chinese investment hasn't yet paid off. There are pleasure cruises from the Chinese side in Dandong, where the boats pull right up against the riverbank on the DPRK side as the entire width of the river is in both countries, even if some of the small mid-river inhabited islands you sail around are DPRK territory and you can wave at the people from a few metres away, but not get off the boat and join them. There's also the 'One metre leap' from the Chinese side, at a point where the Yalu River is so narrow you can almost jump into the DPRK. The Chinese have posted signs, with cute pictograms illustrating a list of 'Don'ts'. One expressly forbids 'contact' with any soldiers you might see on the DPRK side and this includes an instruction not to throw things, like cans of Coke across the river to them. How come these didn't make the cut - aren't they strange enough!? 🙂

Very good video! But you seem to have missed one of the weirdest borders of all: the central part of German-Belgian border. Its shape is meandering leaving quite a few German enclaves behind it on the Western side. Reason being that Belgium after WW1 claimed the territory of a strategically important railway running through Germany as theirs. So a narrow ribbon of Belgian state of just 10m in width is running through Germany for tens of kilometres, being a cycling track nowadays. To make things even weirder: you can cycle on a bridge staying entirely on Belgian territory running above a road which is never leaving Germany! Check it out!

I can think of these cases: Point Roberts, Washington, USA - road access to the rest of the United States only by driving through British Columbia, Canada. Northwest Angle, Minnesota, USA - road access to the rest of the United States only by driving through Manitoba, Canada. Hyder, Alaska, USA - only road access to the community is through British Columbia, Canada. [Hyder has a seaplane dock for flights from elsewhere in Alaska]. Stanstead, Quebec, Canada/Derby Line, Vermont, USA - border splits the community in two. Notably the community public library/opera house straddles the border. Estcourt, Maine, USA - Homes at the most northerly point in Maine have front street [rue de la Frontiere], front yards, and often half their houses in Canada, with the rest of the houses, and the back yards in Maine. No road access to the American side of the homes. Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada - only road access is a bridge to Maine, USA. All of these were relatively painless borders prior to 9/11, but became more difficult afterwards. Border emergency closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic were crises for the communities involved.

How has colonization played a part in the huge difference between Haiti and Santo Domingo when Haiti became independent in 1791 while Santo Domingo in 1822? I think it has more to see with levels of education and political corruption. And not to forget that while the colonists stayed in Santo Domingo after the independence, in Haiti all white colonists were massacred in 1804 (over 20.000 people).
