I agree Metamorphosis was really about "What is Love?" and the cloud creature was like, "Baby don't hurt me... don't hurt me... no no." Lol loved it guys :) I think my biggest surprise watching yall over the series was you not liking "Balance of Terror" (as much as many) but oh well - far MORE often you reinvigorated my appreciation for episodes I hadn't thought about. Thanks and looking forward to more Trek reactions!

I can see why each of you picked your #1 eps. "This Side Of Paradise" is for Spock's character what "City On The Edge Of Forever" is for Kirk. Both make my top 10 but I place the latter as my #1 because of the total gut punch ending. At the end of "This Side Of Paradise", you feel sad for Spock but at the end of City On The Edge Of Forever you just feel sad, period. My Top 15 (everything below #1 could be sorted differently but will leave as is): 1. City on the Edge Of Forever (nuff said) 2. Balance Of Terror (Debut of Romulans, action, good acting, good B plot) 3. The Doomsday Machine (best acting by a guest star) 4. Journey To Babel (entertaining, Spock character development, fast paced start to finish) 5. Mirror, Mirror (great concept and acting) 6. The Menagerie (excellent framing story around the original pilot) 7. Amok Time (great story, character development for Spock) 8. Space Seed (Ricardo Montalban a close 2nd for best guest performance) 9. The Galileo Seven (Spock’s First Command-underappreciated ep.) 10. The Naked Time (Great acting by Nimoy/Shatner) 11. All Our Yesterdays (Kelley/Nimoy both shine here) 12. This Side Of Paradise (More Spock character development) 13. The Enemy Within (arguably Shatner’s best individual performance in TOS) 14. The Ultimate Computer (action, good guest star acting) 15. Bread & Circuses (Bones/ Spock dynamic, action, good premise) Honorable Mentions: A Private Little War A Taste Of Armageddon The Enterprise Incident A Piece Of The Action The Trouble With Tribbles Tomorrow Is Yesterday For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky

As to "Is there in Truth no Beauty," the reason a lot of people "overlook" this episode is because they saw it as kids, and as a kid, it doesn't really have action, cool aliens, or big fight sequences... You watched it as adults, and that makes all the difference in the world. If you grew up watching Star Trek from childhood, you probably overlook this episode in all your favorite lists.

I’m just the opposite: As a kid, I thought it was a cool episode. As an adult I felt that using the word “ugly” was very much a 60s label, not one that an “evolved” Captain from the 23rd century would use.

It's great to see two guys born in either the 90's or 2000's finding so much meaning and enjoyment watching Star Trek TOS. I say this because honestly, I felt that only someone born in the 60's or 70's could get enjoyment out of TOS. I know whenever I bring up this series to my younger co-workers and suggest they check it out I will usually get a hard no. Watching Star Trek TOS to them would be as alien as having them use a phone with a rotary dial. To many of the younger generation all they know about Star Trek is the J.J. Abrams's movies or the stuff being shown on Paramount Plus. So, seeing two guys that wouldn't be part of the usual target audience and honestly finding entertainment watching TOS makes viewing these episodes again so satisfying. Thanks. 👍

Another aspect of _"City on the Edge of Forever"_ for people who have been following the show is that the viewer really feels the impact of those ending scenes. If you know the characters, you know just how horrified McCoy would be that Kirk prevented him from saving Edith Keeler. And then we have the (almost-)always stoic Spock saying "He knows", and you know that even the stoic guy totally understands and sympathizes with the pain of Kirk in that situation. And then when it ends with Kirk saying "Let's get the hell out of here" after so many episodes which have ended in some kind of cheerful quip, any long-time fan knows just how much this experience effected Kirk.

As a kid, the "Doomsday Machine" was quite impactful... I'd never thought of something so "massive," so destructive, let loose as a last resort that continues on, destroying planet after planet... because I grew up during the Cold War, it "tied in" to people's fears of a world-ending war so massive, no one would survive. It also had a ton of action, but it left me thinking about how many billions were killed as it made its way through the universe...

The library of incidental music used in the show is very memorable. Not just because the stock music is re-used so often, but because it was of an unusually high standard for that era. This selection of music could be used to provide any TOS episode with extra impact. Composer Fred Steiner would assist Jerry Goldsmith for the music of 'The Motion Picture' and Alexander Courage would be one of the orchestrators on several of Goldsmith's later ST film scores.

Well as a kid for me it was Doomsday Machine. Still in my top ten, but as I got older I would say Journey to Babel or City on the Edge of Forever. Journey had so much going on at the same time along with some Spock backstory with his parents being explored. I don't think that younger audiences can really appreciate how groundbreaking Star Trek was. Keep in mind that "A Private Little War" aired in the midst of the protests against the Vietnam War, a time when repressive conformity was at its height in America. There was a tremendous amount of tension and hostility toward people who objected to the war, a time when you could actually get shot for criticizing government policy. The main strength of Star Trek, and science fiction generally, is its value as allegory, making it possible to explore deep political, social, and philosophical issues without proselytizing. Also in the midst of the Civil Rights movement and heightened tensions between races, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" shone a brilliant light on the absurdity and ultimate destructiveness of race hatred. Then, of course, there was the famous kissing scene between Kirk and Uhura in "Plato's Stepchildren." Probably everybody by now knows the story of how network executives were worried about backlash in southern states, how Shatner and Nichols sabotaged attempts to make an alternate version of the scene, and the almost deafening lack of any protests at all when the episode aired. As usual, network executives vastly underestimated the intelligence of viewers, and of Star Trek fans especially; the kind of people who would object to an interracial kiss are just not the kind of people who would watch Star Trek. I think that's missing a lot from today's science fiction, where pessimism about the future is the main fashion, in the mistaken belief that "grittiness" is required for truthful writing. Science fiction has so much potential as a tool for positive change. The only show lately, that I know of, that has tried to live up to that ideal is "The Orville."

  • @Lethgar_Smith

    @Lethgar_Smith

    Жыл бұрын

Great comment. I too notice how science fiction's depiction of the future has changed over the years. Gone now is the clean and stark white nature of Kubrick's vision which was really a synthesis of all the promises of what the future that we were barreling towards would be like. But somehow it began to change. Planet of the Apes was not the first movie to depict a post apocalyptic world. H.G.Wells' Things to Come possibly hold's that title but Planet of the Apes was one of the first mainstream Hollywood productions in the post-war era to show a dark and desolate future awaiting humanity. Later films like Soylent Green and even Logan's Run with its false utopia of a clean and modern metropolis hides a dark future that is just over the horizon. This begs the question, are these self-fulfilling prophecies? Is it a subconscious desire to live in such a world, or is it purely prophetic? If it is, why did it seem to change after the 1960s to a more darker vision of the future? Meaning, did our destiny change course or did we simply change our beliefs about ourselves? Star Trek is the only Sci-fi franchise that still believes that human civilization will continue and thrive in the future. Is that prophetic or is it just wishful thinking? More importantly, maybe it's our choice.

Nice to see Bread and Circuses getting some respect. Finally. For many years I've been telling anyone who will listen that it's a top 5 episode. My other top 5s: Mirror, Mirror (always my #1 episode); The Doomsday Machine; Amok Time; All Our Yestedays (the season 3 episode everyone sleeps on). Anyway, the reasons why Bread and Circuses is such as great episode: 1. It really takes a close look at the ramifications of the Prime Directive which usually gets violated all the time. What happens if it is actually followed? In this case the less-advanced civilization will take advantage of the more-advanced civilzation. The Procounsel - an fantastic villan - uses it as a weapon agains Kirk and everyone. 2. One of the greatest Spock/McCoy scenes of all time. This was the one time where McCoy really nails Spock. He reveals him completely and Spock knows it. "Really, Doctor . . " 3. Amazing character developement. Merrick takes the route of sacrifice and redemption and we the see the exact moment when he makes this choice: when the Procounsel calls him less-than-a-man. 4. The entire what-if-Rome-survided-into-modern-times is just so fascinating in and of itself. Great commentary on the tastes of the public. 5. The terrific reveal at the end as to the meaning of "Sun". Making such a pro-Christian message is taking a chance - let's face it; and I think is one of the reasons this episode doesn't get the credit it deserves. Enjoying yer channel, Guys. Glad it is not the usual "reaction" stuff. (That garbage is so played-out and phoney.)

We'll soldier through the animated episodes -- a couple are actually pretty good -- and then make our way to Wrath of Khan. However, I will exploit this opportunity to comment yet again to yet again recommend the original Outer Limits. Lots of baffling, exasperating episodes, to be sure -- but then that was no less true of ST:TOS. Original OL also featured many episodes which were unabashed classics -- and I dare to suspect that Josh, at least, may go for it. It has a sense of romance, excellent black and white cinematography, and one of the greatest "libraries" of music found anywhere in television. I hope someday you'll get something out of the Limits.

One of my favorite episodes, which didn't make this list, is the original pilot, "The Cage". Yeah, it doesn't have any of our beloved characters (other than a prototype Spock), but it's got some fascinating ideas and intriguing adversaries, and it's about as close as we get in TOS to the "more thought-provoking, less action-packed" type of sci-fi storytelling that Roddenberry had wanted to make. Indeed, I've always felt "The Cage" works very well on its own, as a standalone short film.

I've been watching Star Trek since I was a little boy in the 60s. The first time I saw it, I knew nothing about it, and thought it was a horror show, so when it started to play, I was getting scared. Turns out, I was scared for no reason. I don't remember why I thought it was horror instead of sci-fi, but, oh well, who knows the mind of an 8 year old. My number one episode is "Balance of Terror." I love the war tactics between Kirk and the Romulan commander, and the first reveal of the Romulan/Vulcan connection. And the respect the two captains had for each other in the end.

As a kid, I expected horror from Star Trek too, but I DO remember why. I was seven years old when it debuted, and the very first episode was "The Man Trap." @@JAMESLEVEE Well, okay, maybe not identical, but honestly as close as you can get without actual copying. In both cases the humans were powerless to defeat the machines directly so they did it through using the machine's programming against it. In the case of nNmad - its programming (faulty) was to destroy everything that was not perfect. Kirk was able to show Nomad that it wasn't perfect - that it, in fact, had made a series of errors. In the case of M5, Kirk showed it that it had violated its prime directive which was to protect human life. I don't think M5 had an emotional subsystem; but fortunately it had its creator's (Daystrom's) humanistic values programmed into it. So I just find this to be another case of logic, not emotion. My take, anyway. In both cases the machines had no other logical alternative but to destroy themselves.

I have a theory/hypothesis about Josh's less than enthused reaction to "DoomsDay machine". This 1st came to mind after hearing his reaction to "Balance of Terror". I think both episodes play on the original audience's thick Cold War and Nuke War Zeitgeist of the time. It taps that same vein to lesser level now for those who do have concerns. And many people's general feeling towards war. I get the impression that for Josh those feelings or instincts don't run deep or at lest that those episodes don't scratch that place. 1 of Josh's comments on Balance of Terror was that he didn't understand the Romulans motives so he couldn't get into it. the impression that comment gave me was that Josh doesn't really buy the idea that some nations can be aggressive without having motives that we really comprehend. Also he doesn't seem to catch in the Romulan's Dialogue with it's similarity to WW2 Japanese (or Roman) empire type culture of honor and glory of battle kind ideals, and pride in conquest for the "praetor". The Doomsday Machine plays into many people's very real fears of self-annihilation through "defense technology". I'm hypothesizing that Josh doesn't really have a very high concern of that, so the bulk of the episode never clicked on that level. So the only thing that reached him was Decker's intensity and actions. Not the full orbed reason for his and everyones tension overall. that's my theory.

In defense of Doomsday Machine (and I'm fine if someone disagrees. I just want to express my reasons, but I don't get militant if you don't like it), I thought it was a compelling story, with some fantastic performances. Particularly of note, William Windham's acting. And that climactic ending... the editors needed to win all the awards the way the tension ramps as they countdown the time. But the glue that holds it all together was the brilliant soundtrack to the episode. I thought it was theatrical in execution. And I will say City on the Edge of Forever is good... Where No Man Has Gone Before 15. The City on the Edge of Forever An unusual selection, I know. As you can see, I have a preference for a) strange, surreal and dark episodes; b) episodes that contribute strongly to Star Trek's worldbuilding; and c) what might be called "ultra-macho" episodes, although there are several other such episodes absent from my top 15 (e.g., "Balance of Terror", "Arena", "The Doomsday Machine"). "The Man Trap" ranks higher than it would have before watching your videos, in recognition of how effectively it hooked the two of you into the series. "The Trouble with Tribbles" would have been in my top ten as a kid, but, like many comedies, it suffers from too many rewatches -- even the original "Ghostbusters", for example, I don't find nearly as funny as I once did. "Operation -- Annihilate!" only entered my top 5 as an adult, once I had lost loved ones and lived through national tragedies. Your best *reaction* of the 79 was, of course, "A Private Little War".

For me, Trek always fell into one of five episode types: 1) "Ship-vs-Ship" Trek (my favorite as a kid until the later feature films made it an every-single-film trope that has carried over into the post-Abrams series; although Strange New Worlds is making a notable effort to steer the concept back in the right direction). 2) "Cerebral" Trek episodes deal more with ideas than a villain-or-monster-of-the-week, although they might trick you by starting out as such. 3) "Action" Trek tends to have the more familiar, "villain-of-the-week" that typically leads to a spectacular, often hilarious throwdown between Kirk (or his OBVIOIUS stunt doubles) and the villain by episode's end. 4) "Purely Fun" Trek breaks from the often idea-heavy sci-fi-action that dominates much of the original series. These always tend to lighten the mood and work as refreshing palate cleansers. Even the original crew's feature films have a couple of these, with The Voyage Home being one of the highest-grossing Trek films at the time for a reason - it was simple, crowd-pleasing FUN. 5) And lastly, just "Drek" episodes which are (in my worthless opinion) episodes that quickly wear out their welcome. These five "types" carry over into the later series as well (and some of the movies). And with TNG, DS9, and Voyager each having seven seasons each, the later shows obviously have more episodes to choose from overall, but after TNG, one could easily argue that the writers were suffering from burnout, because they simply started recycling, and the feature films have yet to stop trying to recreate the magic that was Wrath of Khan (sigh). If I were to put the Trek series into a top 10 form... 10. Picard (Season 3; I didn't watch the first two seasons out of sheer protest; that post-Abrams drek is simply NOT my Star Trek for the most part). 9. Discovery (It has its merits - like a solid cast and the best production values Trek has ever seen - but who cares when the stories are written by 5 year olds? It steals shamelessly from other sci-fi, and all of the characters are overly-emotional WRECKS. Yech. Yet it does boast appearances from Pike, Spock, and the Enterprise). 8. The Animated Series (minus a very few episodes, this was largely a dud for me, mainly because the format was too short, and the music wasn't up to the quality of TOS, but they took it seriously for the most part - it stuck out like a sore thumb in the Saturday Morning Cartoon landscape - and those handfull of episodes ARE very much worth seeing, having been written by some of TOS veteran writers like DC Fontana. Yesteryear, The Lorilei Signal, More Trouble, More Tribbles, The Time Trap, The Magicks of Megas-Tu, The Survivor, Mudd's Passion, How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth, The Eye of the Beholder, Beyond the Farthest Star, One of Our Planets is Missing, and The Slaver Weapon. When it worked, it was classic Trek in animated form. When it didn't... drek. 7. I know I'm going to get hate for this but... DS9. Not only was this the first Trek to abandon Gene Roddenberry's original vision in favor of a "darker, more realistic" Trek, but it also SHAMELESSLY stole the basic plot, premise, and setting of Babylon 5. B5's creator left his series bible with Paramount for SIX MONTHS, after which time they rejected his concept only to come out with DS9, a space station by a wormhole with a down-on-his-luck commander who became the focal point for an intergalactic war. They even stole some of the character names like Leeta and Dukat. When B5 finally got made at Warner Brothers, I literally thought it was a DS9 ripoff, but it was the other way around. Despite having just half of DS9's budget, B5 turned out to be one of the best sci-fi television series EVER produced, getting better with each season. DS9, while easily the best-looking Trek of its era, nonetheless got bogged down in stories that weren't even about human beings. For me, Sisco and "the human adventure" got lost amid all the "bubble headed" aliens. Yeah, it has Star Trek fleet battles, and yeah, they're fun to watch, but it really wasn't Star Trek at that point. Kirk would NEVER have let that happen (or Gene, for that matter). But I know people love it, and it IS it's own thing, separate from B5. It's just... too many misses, and an over-reliance on LONG story arcs. Not Trek enough for me until they brought in the Defiant in later seasons and actually started Star Trekking. Turns out that was also a ripoff of the B5 bible - which planned to bring in the White Star in season 3. Sigh. 6. Strange New Worlds (has tremendous promise compared to the rest of the post-Abrams drek, but for every effort to reclaim the flavor of TOS, it throws in some arbitrary emo drama that reduces its team of professionals to a bunch of shouting, crying high school students). EASILY the best of the post-Abrams stuff, but only time will tell if can bring back the old fans for good. 5. Enterprise Seasons 1-3. The writers were both burned out and stymied by a studio who REFUSED to let them use the "look" of the original series. So even though DS9 and Voyager had episodes that used TNG and TOS sets and ships, Enterprise was FORCED to look as high-tech as Voyager. It made no sense, but the studio didn't care. They were increasingly becoming more hostile towards the hippie fandom that had been pushing them around with bumper-sticker campaigns and online campaigns for years, and who had gotten spoiled by TNG which allowed fans to submit their own stories (many of which were used as episodes). So they tied the writers' hands, basically. And despite an AWESOME cast, tremendous enthusiasm, great production design, fx, and an effort to harken back to that TOS flavor... the first three seasons were just kind of boring, imo. But it was still frequently better than a lot of the more dour DS9 and Voyager drek. 4. Voyager - imo - stole the basic premise of yet another classic sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica, with a rag-tag, fugitive ship trying to find its way back to Earth. The first few seasons weren't that great imo, and like DS9, it suffered from too many bubble-heads. But then they met up with the Borg, brought in Jeri Ryan - in a stunning outfit - and the writing clicked. She became the new Spock to Janeway's Kirk, and while admittedly drawn to the outfit at first, I actually got hooked on the improved writing. Like Spock, she gave the series a human center. The formula changed into a more familiar, Kirk-Spock-McCoy vibe, and the last few seasons offered some of Voyager's best imo, with some of Star Trek's best villains - the Borg. 3. Enterprise Season 4. In its last season, Enterprise got a new producer in the form of Manny Cotto. Instead of dragging out season-long stories, it shortened the formula back to three-episode blocks that felt kind of like mini-movies, all of which harkened back to better days - a Khan-related adventure, a solid Vulcan arc, a story about forming the Babel alliance, and a classic "Mirror universe" two-parter. It got REALLY good in that last season, but it was too little, too late, and the season was - sadly - bookended by really bad episodes, and those are the ones most people tuned in for. Cotto had to write his way out of a HUGE mess at the start of the season, and then got c*ck blocked by the studio at the end when they decided to bring back the DS9 and Voyager writer-producer team to wrap up the series. It was jarring to suddenly be thrust back into a Next Gen episode, especially one in which they stuck it to Manny by killing off some of the more popular characters arbitrarily. 2. The Next Generation. It initially angered a lot of people that it WASN'T son-of-Kirk, son-of-Spock, etc., but Gene wisely kept was the basic Trek formula (the five episode types), paid respects to the original series without being dependent on it, and it just got better and better, perhaps peaking with the Borg two-parter between seasons 3 and 4. There are a handful of lousy TNG eps, but most are surprisingly thought-provoking and good, representing some of the best Star Trek outside of the original series. 1. TOS is simply the best. DRAMATIC music, over-the-top acting by Shatner, SUPER-understated performances by Nimoy, comedy and pathos from DeForest Kelly, James Doohan, and the rest of the classic cast, and some of the best sci-fi since The Twilight Zone. It gave a generation of kids growing up in the shadow of Viet Nam and the Cold War a reassuring dose of reason, humanity, humor, and pure, escapist adventure (rather than trying to be as bleak as the times). Cancelled before it's time, it didn't become a hit until they started airing reruns after the evening news - when all the college kids would turn the channel and look for something else - and it became so popular that fans created their own conventions, which became HUGE, prompting Paramount to start work on Star Trek: Phase II, a sequel series that was well into pre-production when a little film called Star Wars came out and rocked the box office world. After that, Paramount Execs gave Star Trek the A-list cinematic treatment. The rest is film and TV history. Sorry to prattle, I've just turned 50 and STILL geek out over this stuff. It literally changed my life when I started getting into it around the age of 12, and I HOPE that Strange New Worlds continues to respect the long-time fans and the ideology of Gene and the first two series. Like Picard Season 3, it's equal parts nostalgia and frustration, but even the original series was largely hit and miss. DeForest Kelly once said that Trek was made not from individual episodes or films, but from specific moments between the characters that audiences loved. Regardless of series, I think that's largely true. Thanks for taking the time to watch and review this classic genre series; it's been great fun reliving it, and I hope you do the same with Next Gen, the movies, and beyond!

Your lists are so different from mine and that's a great thing about Star Trek, that we have different opinions about episodes, but it doesn't matter, because we all love Star Trek so there's no reason to argue or be upset about it.

You guys should check out the fan made series "Star Trek Continues". I promise that you will not believe how good the quality of these episodes are..... the sets, the costumes, the stories, the acting..... everything is top notch. There are 11 episodes. Episodes 10 and 11 are a two part finale. And guess what. One of you mentioned that you would like to see what happens in the mirror universe after "Mirror, Mirror". That is the exact plot of one of the episodes! I think you will enjoy it. The series was the brain child of Vic Magliogne (I still can't get his last name right), but it is on KZread, along with 2 or 3 shorts, and, of course, a behind the scenes and goodbye shoot. I laughed, I cried. These episodes were meant to be a bridge between TOS and the first movie. Check 'em out.

I loved watching you guys react to this show. I definitely plan on continuing to watch. But this Twilight Zone/ Star Trek thing. Both of you know how many things you saw in Star Trek TOS that you realized immediately other series later ripped off. Does that somehow diminish all of those other series in your mind as well? I think they should be praised for the fact that they pulled it off so well! ❤

As I mentioned in my comment on the guys' reaction video for "City," the "Doctor Who" franchise did about 10 variations on "City" in the 2000s (the "first RTD era"), and they were all excellent episodes -- some of them even won Hugos!

You can do a entire video series on Star Trek being ripped off. the whole Purge franchise is Return of the Archons. Also I wonder if Bird Box spiked a renewed interest in Is There in Truth no Beauty??

Guys, I am now watched all the animated series with you. I’ve gone through all three seasons, the original series all 79 episodes and I’ve even done the cage but I love that you said you guys would never do different for me because growing up in Philadelphia in the 70s Channel 17 in Philadelphia on the cable system aired the 79 episodes from 1972 all the way up to six months before next generation started and my brother and I watch the show religiously used to be on 4 o’clock Monday through Friday during the school year and then in the summertime when school was out, they would move it to 7 o’clock and they even put it before Battlestar Galactica after it was canceled and then they would have Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica back to back from 7 to 8, so my way of looking at Star Trek is quite different plus the fact my brother ended up getting a degree in applied science from Penn State university in computer science because of Mr. Spock. I ended up getting an associates degree in applied science in electrical engineering in telecommunications from Reading area community college, and then Kutztown University is where I got my bachelors in applied science I actually hold 10 different degrees in applied science because of Star Trek so that tells you how the show is affecting my life if it wasn’t for Star Trek and mission impossible, and Doctor Who. I would not be doing what I did for a living for the last 42 years of my career and anytime you guys want to take the show on the road and come to the East Coast. Are you ever in the Greater Philadelphia area look me up I’ll be glad to do a special Star Trek on location show with you anytime and I know everything about Star Trek. That’s why I didn’t comment on everything because I could’ve left the whole page of comments for every damn episode and every movie you’ve gone through, I haven’t done your wrath of come with you posted yet and I haven’t done your search for Spock but as soon as I’m done with this comment I will be posting. I will be looking at those as well. It’s been a fun ride with you so far and I’m gonna hang with you .

Thank you so much for going through the original series. I love reaction videos and there are a million Star Wars ones and very little Trek ones. Mostly the 3 JJ movies.

Throwing out my top 15: 1. City on the Edge of Forever [A top 5 of any Trek, most likely] 2. Journey to Babel 3. Mirror, Mirror 4. Balance of Terror 5. Trouble with Tribbles 6. The Enterprise Incident 7. The Doomsday Machine 8. Amok Time 9. The Menagerie 10. Space Seed 11. The Tholian Web 12. Bread and Circuses 13. Elaan of Troyius 14. A Private Little War 15. Obsession Any number of shows could easily be in the place of 12-15: "Corbomite," "Is There in Truth," "A Taste of Armageddon", "Arena" and "Devil in the Dark," to name just five. Season 1 was my favorite season. If I had answered this in 1979, I'm pretty sure "Shore Leave," "The Apple," "Return of the Archons" and "The Gamesters of Triskelion" would be in here. [I notice I tend to like ones that get further exploration in future series and the ones that tended to lay out the blueprint the most for future Trek. I'm not sure how I'd come down if there had been no followup movies or series].

Lots of fun watching your reactions and no hard disagreements, well except maybe on The Empath. Not surprised that Sci Fi writers from the golden age like Ellison, Bloch and Brown were there on the list. Think you're going to love Star Trek TNG as well and looking forward to it.

Most Star Trek fans have seen every episode multiple times, usually number times beyond human memory. Some episodes dont wear as well as others. Some get better with age. A first time viewing will not usually have the same impact as it does on those who have seen it multiple times throughout their formative years.

Would love to see you guys try at least the first two ANIMATED Trek episodes. I think the 2nd one won an emmy. And it has most of the original cast. Really everyone except Chekhov and Yeoman Rand. 2nd ep is really worth seeing.

See, Alex, patrons, all have the same #1. Clearly, Josh is wrong.🤣 But, seriously, it'd be like me telling you no, you don't like oranges better than apples. Clearly, you must like apples better b/c I like apples better. I love it that you guys have come across Trek and gone on this adventure liking what you like being 'eh' on others. My glasses, when it comes to Trek, is so rose colored, I don't know that I dislike any of the episodes (even the ones that other fans are meh on) so I get liking some things, but not others. Looking forward to more of your Trek (and others) experiences.
