I can't believe the punishments for speaking their native language at the residential schools, let alone all of the other punishments for just being indigenous. I'm trying so hard to teach my kids Welsh so that it doesn't die out just like all the other schools in Wales, although I live in the US. It just boggles my mind that the sacredness of anyone's native language are treated so lightly and, indeed, horrifically, especially by the indigenous of the North Americans and South Americans. I was even taught Qetchua when I lived in Bolivia when I studied abroad because it was so important to keep.

Ms. Ree it really has effected my people, my grandmother went to a residential school, her best friend was whipped to death just because she was crying for her parents. My grandmother can’t sleep without the lights on because she is scared she will wake up and be back in that place. There’s so much more and even us the youth have been effected by the long term effects

Ms. Ree my grandma was forced to go to residential school. And what the public knows doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what happened sadly. And they say it was 96 when the last one closed but in reality it wouldn’t till 98 the it shut it’s doors completely, and there is still more going on that isn’t being talked about. Our missing and murdered men and women, the children that were kidnapped during and after the sixties scoop. Everything, it makes me sad I do not know my language my culture or traditions. 😢

It sounds horrible to say but at least the first guy in the video killed himself and not the other students.

There's actually been advancements in the Kendrick Johnson case. A student eye witness has come forward, accusing several students of the murder and saying he was threatened into silence by the students families, who had connections to police and FBI, and the school themselves. Natives rarely mention this tragedy and I was a grown adult before I ever heard of it. Its an outrage and so recent that those abuses are extremely relevant. The native community in my area are working hard to repair that damage and I have extreme respect for them. I’m First Nation.. and I know so many elders that went to the residential schools, and my grandma told me a story, that one night, one of the sisters woke her up, and told her to put on her clothes, she asked why but she got mad at her and told her not to ask questions, she put on her stuff, and she gave my grandma a bag, and it had 2 cats in there, she told my grandma “Go throw this in that fire” because they made a fire outside especially for the cats, my grandma said no, but she strapped her.. so my grandma went outside face running with tears, she said if my grandma didn’t throw the cats in the fire she would get I don’t know how many straps, the traps were made of thick pieces of tire... *more of the story in the comments*

My grandma really didn’t go much into to detail.. because she gets very emotional talking about it... but.. she did it... she never wanted to.. but they would have abused her... and.. I don’t know.. it’s horrible to think of what they did to the kids in the residential schools... they even renamed them, but they weren’t actual names.. they just got numbers like some sort of animal.. it’s sad to think about it..

I grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada. When I was in junior high they had to segregate a high school due to racial discrimination. Cole Harbour High School had morning classes for the white students and afternoon classes for the black students. If you look into Nova Scotia’s past you will see that the province seethes with racism!

Me and my friends were saying in school "oh let's play baby blue. Oh lets play charlie charlie." So one girl played baby blue and the rest played charlie charlie. The pencils moved and the teacher saw. There was a boy with scissors beside us and he did something with them. The teacher yelled at us "DONT DO THAT EVER AGAIN OR IT WILL BE A OFFICE REFERRAL!!" nobody play every again and nobody knew who she was yelling at. Us or the boy with the scissors

Why is everyone complaining about his voice? If you find it boring etc. go find another channel. No one's forcing you to watch his videos. Personally, I really like his voice. It fits the type of videos he makes.

Levilum I love this voice! I sometimes take naps hearing it. It's so relaxing! However, in this video, he seems to drag out the last word in his sentences. He doesn't do that often. It's not a deal breaker, it's just something I couldn't help but notice.

No, it happened in Canada too. So many horrific stories & many died. My grandma & everyone else before her went to the schools. My grandma’s toe was broken when a Nun hit it with a walking stick in class because she spoke Cree. She slapped her for crying too. They didn’t treat her the toe had to heal on it’s own.

Devi majority of those mentioned were the US and Canada, could have replaced any of those with Columbine. Like the kid who saw someone in the ceiling. Or the kid with a heart condition. Or the other Virginia tech one. There's plenty that don't fit as well with the others that Columbine could have replaced without removing the one that's in a different country than any others

thank you for featuring residential schools, the rest of the world too often forgets that canada is not at all a perfect place and has a horrible history of human rights violations.

Mozarel Its his tone and cadence. It makes him sound like a valley girl with a monotonous voice. It's definitely unique to me and I kind of thought it was funny & a little annoying, but it's something I've grown to like. People just have their opinions on his voice, and even if we may disagree, they are no less entitled than you are. I think they still enjoy his videos because they seem to return.

Number three was a difficult one to process. The kid stabbed the officer yes, but he wasn't mentally stable as per witnesses. So the officer seemed to have acted to save his life and the life are others... Why is that a "wrongful death"? Seems like a sad but justified shooting?? What a grey area, man...

While I totally agree that those incidents are terrible and worthy of such a list, they're pretty straight forward and well known cases, just like the Virginia Tech Massacre that was referenced in the larger point about subsequent incidents at VT. It seems like this list was highlighting lesser known and, in some cases, more mysterious events. Another similar incident like the ones you mentioned would be the University of Texas at Austin shootings by Charles Whitman, who climbed a tower on campus and killed a number of students. It was really the first widely known school shooting to have happened; However, it's only the fifth most deadly school attack worldwide. An arson in Kenya had 67 victims, followed by the Bath school disaster in America where a school was blown up with 45 deaths. A terrorist attack in Nigeria on a school claimed 43 lives, then we have the Virginia Tech massacre with 32, Sandy Hook with 28 (I think?), before arriving at Whitman's 17. Columbine probably ranks about the 8-9th deadliest behind the Montreal Nursing Student deaths and a few other events I can't recall. Most school attacks tend to result in a single death, if that, thankfully. Of course, it's the bigger tragedies that grab our attention.

i remember my grandmother she tells me stories about the thigs they did to her in the 40's and 50's. My own mother even suffered as well untyil they relocated to california and decided to say they were mexican, instead of apache and yauki.

I have a message for you: The way Chills speaks is how he's always gonna speak. Your whining isn't going to change how he talks. I elongate my words when I speak sometimes, its just how I am. Sure you can enforce your opinion but whining about it won't help.

Those experiences in residential schools still have a ripple effect through communities to this day. Unfortunately the healing from it is not as quick as the damage that was done back then
