Top 15 Best Autumn Leaves in Gunma Pref, Japan (Part 1) / Oze, Marunuma, Mt. Kusatsu-Shiranesan
Gunma Prefecture is a treasure trove of autumn leaves viewing spots, offering spectacular autumn scenery! In Part 1 and Part 2, we will introduce 15 places in Gunma Prefecture with spectacular autumn leaves.
In the first part, we will introduce 6 autumn leaves spots including "Oze", "Marunuma/Sugenuma", and "Kusatsu-Shiranesan", which will be at their best from late September to early October.
Please enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery, lakes, marshes, and other scenery of autumn leaves, which are a spectacular feature of the autumn season!

Oze ( Late September - Early October )
Oze is one of the most extensive highland marshes in Japan, straddling Gunma, Fukushima, and Niigata Prefectures, and offers a variety of spectacular scenery combining marshlands and mountains, aptly called "faraway Oze". Oze is divided into two main areas, Ozenuma and Ozegahara, both of which belong to "Oze National Park" and are designated as "Special Natural Monuments" by the government.
Marunuma ( Early to mid October )
Marunuma is a cesspool lake formed by lava from Mt. Nikko Shiranesan. It is surrounded by virgin forest and has a mysterious atmosphere. 1.2 km from north to south, 500 m from east to west, and 1428 m above sea level when full of water.
Suganuma ( Early to mid-October )
Suganuma is another lake dammed by lava from Mt. Nikko Shiranesan, with a surface elevation of 1731 m and a shoreline of 6.5 km when full of water. Suganuma boasts the highest transparency in Honshu at 13.2m.
Kusatsu-Shiranesan ( early to mid-October )
Kusatsu-Shiranesan is a mountain range of multiple peaks centered around an emerald green volcanic lake, Yugama. It is adjacent to the Shiga Kogen Plateau in Nagano Prefecture and offers a magnificent mountain panorama to be enjoyed to the fullest.
In addition, Shibu Pass, located north of Yugama, is the highest point on a national road in Japan. From here, the view of Mt. Kusatsu-Shiranesan is outstanding
Yoshigadaira ( Early to mid October )
Yoshigadaira is a high-altitude marsh spreading out behind Kusatsu-Shiranesan. It can be reached by walking down the promenade from Shibu Pass for a while. The marshland is quiet and beautiful, with about 300 species of plants growing wild around the ponds and pond tangs.
Lake Nozoriko ( Early to mid-October )
Lake Nozoriko is a man-made lake located 1,500 meters above sea level, east of Kusatsu-Shiranesan. Surrounded by 2,000-meter mountains, it is also called "Lake in the Sky," and has been selected as one of the "100 Dam Lakes".
