    For those of you asking why I didn’t include the Peavey 5150/6505 Series amps, here’s why... The Peavey 5150/6505 series are great sounding amps, and I’d even go so far as to call them one of the greatest sounding rock amps ever. They’re great for metal, as well, but for HEAVY tones I just can’t put them in the same realm as the Herbert, Knucklehead, Thunderverb, etc. The Peaveys are heavy-sounding, they’re just not THAT heavy-sounding. I own a couple of them and they’re great, so I have plenty of experience with them.

    Mike Soldano sold the company to Boutique Amps Distribution out of southern California. They are supposedly going to start off with a GTO pedal and a reworked SLO, and supposedly going to launch them at winter NAMM. Great video and great list! My 1986 Mesa/Boogie Mklll Simulclass is a very strong amp and capable of extreme heavy tones and was the amp used on Metallica’s “Black” album. This one has the Marshall style “crunch” channel. I may not have all the other hottest amps out there but this covers a major amount of territory.

I am lucky to (kinda) own 3 of the amps on this list. They all sound phenomenal in their own ways. Would love a Bogner or Diezel but currently settled with my Mesa Roadking II, Soldano SLO100 *with the depth mod) and a Marshall custom shop JCM800 2203. They are my 3 holy grail of tone amps personally and could never part with any of them. Rock on!

    In previous years, I have owned two VHT amplifiers. The first one was a Deliverance which was awesome. The second one was a Pittbull 100 CL. Crazy clarity and massive low end that is deep and percussive. I had owned a Rivera Knucklehead and it was loud as HELL, clean to heavy it was an overall stellar amp. I still think the Pittbull CL was more aggressive. The most aggressive amp that I owned was a Splawn Nitro. Imagine if you took a JCM800 then modded the literal s*** out of it, with a tight percussive low end a clean channel that can rival a Fender. The harmonics leap out of those amps. Surprised that the Framus Cobra isn't on this list?? As far as JCM800's go, they changed the high gain world but what most people have to realize that is that the heaviest JCM800 tones came from modded versions.

    And BTW, despite what most metal guitarists today think, the good old Boss HM-2 can do more than Swedish death metal, remember that this pedal has been around since the early 80's, well before the Swedish death metal scene, and some of us old 80's metal heads go back to those days when the Boss HM-2 was used to play the heaviest sounds of the day such as Venom, Hellhammer, early Slayer. 🤘🤘🤘

    Mike Soldsno sold his operations to Boutique Amps, which handles Friedman and Diezel amps. I did hear Mike say at NAMM that selling wasn't so much about retiring, just retiring from ordering parts, soothing dealers bruises, tracking shipments, and all the day to day that goes with running a company himself. This allows him to go back to tinkering, designing, creating the tones he's still searching for. 🤘🏿😆👍🏿

    Very cool there was a lot to unpack in this episode. First, not sure how I have until this day completely missed the Motley Crew self titled almulm. Lol here I am in 2019 with to me a new Crue album. Will never argue against Marshall as you know I am a fan and yes you need 4 channels. Krank Rev 1 was new to me and holy crap that's heavy. Had to go listen to some tones. My additions to this list, won't surprise you are based on Marshall, the Metropoulis line of amps, these are great amps Plexi with modern features. Also the Mesa Boogie Stilletto. Thing of Marshall Plexi meets dual rec. Oh not sure why your clean amps video is gaining steam but I got an addition to it. A Dumble, yeah I know none of us will ever buy one but got to play one recently. This is by far the best clean amp I have ever played. Clean is so perfect, and then clean where is just starts to break up is heaven. I now know why these amps are such legends.

  • @RobertWJackson

    @RobertWJackson

    Go listen to that Crüe record, you’ll wonder how come you never knew about it before. I’m familiar with the Mesa Stiletto amps. You’re right, that was basically Mesa-Boogie’s Marshall-esque circuit of that era. Not a direct clone, by any means, but they are really cool. I think the dude from Three Days Grace used a Stiletto to record their entire One-X record. (I think that’s what that record was called, anyway.) The reason why I didn’t include the Dumble on the clean amps video is exactly what you mentioned: the price tag. Those things seem to start around $90,000 these days, and there are only a select few players in the world who could possibly afford one. I’ve actually never even seen one in person, much less gotten to play one, so that’s another reason I didn’t include it.

    Hi Robert, I have only recently discovered your KZread channel and have become an instant huge fan. Anyway, I was a front of house engineer for many years including Motorhead, Chicago and Dio and so many others I couldn't count them all. One of my last tours was with Heaven and Hell (Everyone called us Black Sabbath but without Ozzie we couldn't use that name officially) My question is Tony was using Laney amps on the last tour so I was wondering if you'd featured Laney on any of your clips? Cheers, Kevin

  • @RobertWJackson

    @RobertWJackson

    4 жыл бұрын

    A Laney is featured a lot more often on my channel than most people realize, actually. I use a Laney IRT-Studio for most of my full-track demos with bass and drums when I’m doing pedal demos. It’s mounted in my studio rack, so it doesn’t usually make it in the camera shot during those segments, but it does get used a lot. I did do a video specifically on that amp about a year ago, if you haven’t seen it. If you’re new to my channel, than you’re probably not yet aware that, while I love Laney amps as much as the next guy, I’m actually NOT a fan of the AOR’s at all because I HATE the EQ on them. I think it’s far more trouble than it’s worth. But the Ironhearts, the LA series, and the Cub series amps are all great. I’ve not yet heard the Lionheart series amps, but they sure look cool, and I can only imagine they stack up with the rest of their line.

    A point in the Marshall JVM's favor, the guitarists of Nile, a brutal, technical death metal band use the four channel version, and their guitar tones are SAVAGE. Marshalls just have that upper mid grind that works amazingly well for heavy metal. There's a reason Marshall has the reputation it does.

  • @RobertWJackson

    @RobertWJackson

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s why I put it on there. It’s also a prime example why “heavy” guitar tone isn’t always about gain. A JCM 800 cranked up to the sweet spot is as heavy as anything else out there.

    The thing with Cantrell’s tone on their early albums is that it was more or less an equal mix between the Uberschall, A dual rectifier and even one of Cantrell’s old Marshall 800s.The uberschall alone doesn’t really give you that Cantrell tone frankly speaking. Still a killer amp tho.

  • @RobertWJackson

    @RobertWJackson

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yep, Cantrell is known for using multiple amps to record their records. I think he recorded the rhythm guitar on “Check My Brain” 11 different times with multiple different amps layered on top of each other. He’s been doing that for decades. That’s actually a testament to how great of a guitarist he is because it’s actually really difficult to play the exact same thing like that perfectly in time right on top of each other.

  • @RobertWJackson

    @RobertWJackson

    4 жыл бұрын

    They fell victim to corporate ownership. They were owned by St. Louis music for a long time. Then when St. Louis Music were acquired by LOUD Technologies, they continued to push the Crate brand for awhile, but they started moving a lot of of their production overseas to China, including the Blue Voodoo, and they just went downhill from there. Also, Line 6 got popular and were doing everything the Crate solid-state amps could do plus a whole lot more and at the same price point, so my understanding is that rather than adopt the current technology into their own amp line, they decided to shelf the brand altogether and focus more on the Ampeg brand.
