I think Homelander is slightly more redeemable in the Amazon series than in the comics. Yeah, in the comics, when he finds out that Black Noir did all the assault and cannibalism, he feels instant regret. But Homelander was still a flat antagonist prior to the Black Noir twist. I think in the Amazon series, Eric Kripke's choice to flesh out Homelander's backstory throughout the current 4 seasons to display that there's a messed-up reason for all of Homelander's actions was a good move. It makes Homelander more nuanced than anything else.

In the comic books, most of the really horrific shit was actually done by black Noir. Since that’s not going to be the twist in the show, they want to show that he wasn’t born to be an irredeemable sociopathic villain. He was made a monster by the corporation that has since lost their control over him.

Episode four of the 4th season shows what you're talking about. His actions in that episode while extremely twisted are 100% justified. Homelander is one of the best written villains in modern media.

Homelander in show is not smart, but he knows he needs to cover his weaknesses with "smarter" people. He knows nothing of politics or corporate. He went back to the lab to remind himself of his inhumane treatment in order to dismiss his rising humanity. nor is he racist everything he does is still driven for the need of approval. though this is compromised into fear will do if adoration not available. He is still very much a child in a supremely powerful avatar. Think of all those online games you play and the childish comments from excellent players.

  • @Omni-clef

It's not mindless violence, it's just a different interpretation of telling the same story through a different medium of artistic expression. I find benefits and drawbacks to both iterations, I do however, as a matter of personal taste, find the TV show to be slightly better in a net positive sense. Let's not forget though, that if it wasn't for the creative genius of Garth Ennis and his team of writers and illustrators, there would be no show.

"The Boys" is one of the few examples of a live action series being better than its source material. Everything about the Homelander character is better than what was presented in the comics. It's nonsensical Antony Starr hasn't been nominated for awards for his portrayal of the character.
