Everything that Shane went through internally was what was always intended for Rick; having the fiery will to survive and protect loved ones, albeit slowly losing pieces of his humanity. In seasons 1 and 2, there was far more complexity to Shane’s character than there was Rick’s. Shane was lonely, he couldn’t have and protect the people he loved, and while he gradually became mentally unhinged he did provide a necessary template for apocalyptic survival; and he was the catalyst for where everything would end up- all of which were truly important facets that helped round his character and make him one of the most important in the whole series. Kudos to Bernthal for his incredible performance. . Fundamentally, Shane was the perfect character for this sort of universe. Akin to Joel in The Last of Us; the character protected who he loved at all costs (it was logical; trust no one and protect your own), and made the tough decisions without hesitation. Rick, on the other hand, has always hesitated, with his “Save the World” agenda, and he has spent years trying to adapt to the new world. Realistically, Rick would not have survived as long as he did, but because it’s his story the writers can give him as long as he needs.

She loved her kids but she did terrible at keeping an eye on Carl. In Season 2, he had just been shot and had recovered from yet she still allows him to go outside with the walkers. He even tried playing with one of them and failed to kill which showed how awful Carl is as a character and it led to Dale's death. Then after that, he still shows up and kills Walker Shane.

Gabriel is well written character of twd he went from a weak priest to being a one eyed badass And he's the proof of how the apocalypse change people

For me, it has to be the Governor. He reminds me of someone who needs to be in charge all the time. That's the personality of every dictator who has ever lived in modern history. In the series, the Governor was responsible for losing almost every person in his original group, and then nearly everyone in another group as well when he attacked the Prison. The Governor is the true representation for what's truly wrong in a zombie-infested post-Apocalyptic world in The Walking Dead.

Personally I don’t think Gabriel is a bad character, he is a moral compass for the group and is a good person overall and is a symbol of hope. Also I do t know why Eugene is on this list, I really like him, he’s a genius, he’s comedic, and everyone thought that he turned into a traitor when really he saved everybody from Alexandria and the hilltop.

Mix of writing and terrible casting, Laurie Holden was bad, not as bad as Sarah Wayne ( awful actress) as lori but pretty shit. Dale was bad casting too he was way too old man that it would have been a really creepy relationship. Andrea's story in the show was such a mess, considering how great the character is in the comics it's the second biggest character injustice (tyreeeeeesese) in the show.

Eugene is an amazing character, he transformed so well and it's because of him that Rick won against Negan. Gabe also transitioned from an unloyal coward to a trusted and badass member of the group.

Great character she was conflicted between Rick and Shane as Rick was her husband before the apocalypse and we're going through some problems then you had Shane who was the husband's best friend who saved Lori and her child's life in the apocalypse and thought her husband was dead and basically loved both

Lori and Andrea were both horribly written . They weren't horrible people but definitely written poorly and annoying

In 2020 that list looks weird. Eugene and Gabriel are in my top10 best characters

Gabriel cemented himself as awesome to me when he went "Jules from Pulp Fiction" in one episode and started reciting Bible verses when he killed people

Father Gabriel is one of the few characters in this list that redeemed themselves. Andrea was not only stupid but also tried to save everyone.

MarutoFighter, agreed, how cool would it be if she was just left by Carol and crew, then once they take out negan this season ( I havent read the comics but the show is a bit predictable) and they start to see a large group of walkers congregating and its lizzy who has amasses them somehow (probably by feeding them from a rooftop). Thatd have been cool

I watched that episode with a cousin of mine, and he was horrified.. but I couldn't stop laughing. I personally think Carol made a bad call then. But I understood where she came from.. Lizzy was a liability that they could not afford. No matter how young she was. But that wouldn't have stopped me from trying to save her though. It's bad enough to lose one kid, but having to choose to kill the other? Nah.. it's not worth it. Having her live with the thought of killing her sister would've been justified punishment for me.

Eugene as treated like shit by Rick and the others. They saw him as a coward and never thought of using his intellect as a weapon. Negan, respected him and immediately saw his intelligence as a tool. He treated him like royalty and didn't dehumanize him.

Except that Eugene purposefully sabotaged the bullets he produced for Negan and made it easier for the Hilltop, Kingdom, and Alexandrians to beat the Saviors...so I think he's redeemed himself.

Дакота Тринити don’t you get it? Rosita punching him was meant as a sign that he’s forgiven and is one of them again. In a lot of movies and tv shows you see someone getting punched or slapped before being forgiven by the other character. This is pretty cliché and something I’d assume everyone understands

Glo Kash He did. I was just pointing out that I can't blame Eugene for doing what he did. The group treated him like ass. He was smart, but they didn't use that. Only Rosita did when she needed a bullet. Negan, on the other hand, respected him and immediately saw his intelligence as an asset. It's ironic that the enemy showed one of Ricks members more respect than Rick ever showed him.

thats a lie. Clearly in season 8 when they needed to escape the sanctuary.

Gabe, although first a coward, earned his place as one of the coolest. He's head of the council and told gamma God told him to hang her which was such a badass line. Eugene single handedly ended the final battle in the Negan war with zero casualties all by himself. Jadis/Anne is creepy and mysterious and didn't have enough screen time, she was awesome. And Gregory is a scumbag but there's a difference between that and a bad character. He worked so well as the ultimate weasel, that's not bad characterization, just not a very likeable one. Lizzie was also creepy and without her character we wouldn't have one of the best episodes to date (the garden) she represents what kids like Carl and Judith could've been. All others I agree with. But Andrea deserves 1st. Spencer was just kind of there, nothing more.

Eugene isn't that bad of a character he didn't betray Rick she just joined the saviours so he could help Rick and the war by sabotaging bullets

(Warning: THIS IS MY OPINION) I feel like Gabriel shouldn’t be on the list. He’s had his moments, he gets better in the next few seasons. Granted, this was made before his character arc, but he’s the most improved character to me. Everyone else on this list I agree with, though.

Season 10 Gabe is badass. One of my favorite characters now

Ed was in like 2 episodes Ron was a simple character, his brother was way more annoying. Lizzie is one of the most unique/memorable villains. I don't get her hatewagon. Half of Lori's hatewagon is overblown. There are many worse written characters than her by far.

To me Ron Anderson wasn't a bad guy at all. His entire life was a mess and the Grimes men didn't do him many favors either. Then your mother and little brother get killed in front of you. He was still a teenage boy figuring out who he was I don't fault him for anything even attempting at Rick's life

Without Eugene, Rick’s group would be decimated. Gabriel back then was annoying, but now he is badass.

Eugene actually was a part hero cuz In the last season you’ll find out

Actually father Gabriel has gotten a lot better he’s probably in my top ten characters from twd

I think if Ron were still alive he would make a great addition to the group. Of course he would have to change a little but for the most part he was good and was just going through a lot. I understand why he wanted to kill Rick. I mean Rick killed his father. Ron acted the way he did because he didn't see his father the way everyone else did.

Sam was under the same abuse as his brother, but Sam is an angel compared to Ron. Granted, he was young, and didn’t know what to think when his dad was killed, his mom having eyes for Rick, but he did have an instinctive reaction walking through the undead horde in Alexandria. He tried to be brave for as long as he could, but let’s face it, any 8 year old would have the same reaction.

Bat Wolf Ron wasn’t exactly a kid and Lizzie is responsible for the deaths of everyone in the prison. Indirectly, but she is.

Spencer was not number 1. I get that he made questionable decisions, but they were justified. Rick had taken over the community that his parents had build from the ground. His feelings are at least a little understandable.

HomeDeath45 i mean, i haven’t finished the show yet. still only on s5. but from what i’ve seen and heard (about him being a traitor), i think that them disrespecting him is well deserved. he gave them all hope and in the end we find out he was lying. so if i were surviving with him, i would treat him like trash. what he was doing was using people, therefore making nobody respect him, and then he goes off and betrays them all to feel respected again. just another reason to dislike him. i mean, the man couldn’t do much on his own, besides saving tara and stopping (i forgot his name? nicholas?)
