@@anthonyhutchins2300 I believe the consensus is that gamma rays flipping bits isn't going to be allowed for speedruns. If you did allow it then every game would have an ACE exploit like in pokemon red and blue and you could just reprogram yourself to the end credits with external hardware shooting rays at the console.

If cosmic rays are implicated in flipping bits, someone should do an experiment where two tool assisted speedruns are performed on two consoles, one in the presence of a high energy neutron / proton gun aimed directly at the console. Then see if the runs are identical. Lol.

They can still behave identical, it depends which bit is changed, and when it's changed, sometimes it might have no effect at all. And a chance that this exact bit get's hit is pretty damn low unless you've got access to really fucking expensive equipment

So the 007 out of bounds glitch, it has actually happened another time, but not in the same level. Another runner actually clipped out of bounds on the map silo, but unfortunately no one knows how its done

A rogue gamma ray is unlikely - but atmospheric neutrons/protons definitely cause Single Event Upsets (or SEU for short). The phenomenon occurs when cosmic particulate collides with atoms in the atmosphere and said particle(s) subsequently rain down on earth. If a sensitive node in a microelectronic device is struck by one of these atmospheric particles it can cause an SEU - also known as a bit flip. The likelihood of a bitflip occurring in memory is actually quite high - with the possibility of an SEU approaching 100% every 3 or so days per 4 gigabytes of memory. The rarity of the event lies in which particular bit is flipped and whether or not it results in a significant change. We first learned about and recorded SEU's in the 50s during nuclear testing when testers experienced issues with recording equipment. Nowadays most systems have options for Error Correcting Memory to prevent this issue. Bitflips can also occur due to trace amounts of radioactive elements found in some electronic chip-packages.

@6:30 I believe that the enemies were lagging the quick loading of the game, having all sprites, models, and collision rushed. The one in the green loaded *before* the wall’s collision as the door opened, pushing Bond through and sealing him out. Just a theory though!

Oceanside sounds like it might have some fun events to watch. Any plans to do maybe a Mario Maker blind race? Those are always a pleasure to watch.

I'd be more prone to believe the "gamma ray" explanation if it weren't for the fact that the upwarp happened just as Mario was colliding with something. Makes it seem more like something caused by the engine itself.

I'm glad your video has pannenkoek in it, now I can go to my parallel universes with TJ Henry Yoshi and be able to rest in peace.

This list would have been better if you'd just got two more Mario clips and called it "Top 10 Weirdest Moments in Mario Speedrunning" and then made one for non-Mario games, because 8/10 of the list being Mario is kind of disappointing to watch

That last one the upwarp I actually remember something like that happening to me when I played it years ago! Never been able to recreate it, so it probably was just a random glitch not an actual exploit.

For the Mario teleport I have no proof of this but I thought it might work this way- When Mario kicked it set the hit box in a position where Mario clipped into the box. The game then tried to resolve this issue by looking for a solid platform. However, since Mario was moving through the platform, it didn't count it as solid. The game then checked for solid objects starting from the top, found that platform, and teleported Mario up there.

FWIW, the glitch at 7:45 -- it's not necessarily a rogue gamma ray, but RAM (especially old RAM, like you'd find in early consoles, both due to aging and ) _does_ occasionally randomly switch bits. That's actually a huge issue in high-accuracy computing, especially in space; any stray radiation could toggle a bit, and though in Mario that bit just makes a weird warp possible, when your code is controlling a rocket with people onboard and several more depending on the supplies it's carrying, you absolutely can't afford to let it affect anything. There are a whole bunch of mitigation strategies, but they're all expensive and unwieldy, and for a home console that was never _really_ expected to last this long, I doubt it ever even entered into the engineers' minds.
