I have to disagree about Whoopi Goldberg and Marisa Tomei being on this list. A great comedic performance is just as good as a great dramatic performance. Oftentimes dramatic performances come off as mechanical and pretentious. Comedy is hard- you can't fake it. Drama has so many more tricks that can be used to achieve it's desired effects.

  • @2004dale

Yea I really liked Marisa's performance in my cousin vinny. I think overall she is a convincing actress, like her performance in slums of Beverly Hills. Comedy or not you believe her portrayal of a character when you watch her or at least I do. :)

+Rhaegar Targaryen Marisa Tomei is a great actress, proven by her subsequent nominations for dramatic roles (In the Bedroom, the Wrestler). Just because a performance is comedic doesn't mean it's not challenging. Comedy is hard, and isn't recognized/awarded enough!

+Rhaegar Targaryen An example I like to use regardin the difficulty of comedy is Julianne Moore. Moore can't do comedy. She had a role in one of the greatest comedies of all time, Big Lebowski, but she's not a comic. She's the straight role in that film. Evolution required her to be funny, and she's not, and that goes for every comedy she has been in. She's terrible. She just can't do it. Tomei did the comedy really well, but she can also do drama, among many other things. She gets way too much flak, in a bad way, but any time I watch My Cousin Vinny, I enjoy the movie. She doesn't annoy at all. On the other hand, there are many other roles I can never rewatch because they annoy the hell out of me.

  • @leilacherradi3485

I reread your initial comment and I still disagree. I haven't seen my Cousin Vinny but in the excerpt where I see Marisa Tomei, I am not convinced at all, in the excerpt where I see Whoopi I am not convinced. I can't juge a performance with two minutes of acting though. But I would still disagree with your definitions of comedy and drama ending with the idea that comedy is harder than drama. They're just different.

I love the hours to death, but honestly she was the weakest link out of the three leading ladies in the movie, Moore being the strongest. Out of the best actress lineup it should've been Moore or Zellweger who won. The saddest part is the academy had the chance to reward Moore for either of her fantástic performances that year in The Hours and Far From Heaven, and instead gave the Oscar to her for the subpar still Alice.

She acted better in Mask.

Andrew Smith didn’t mean to sound like I was getting on your case mate, was only stating my feelings about the movie. I do agree that there were other more deserving movies that year, and that the other actresses work especially Glen Close’s part in Fatal Attraction was a more worthy part to receive an Oscar especially as her work has yet to be honoured in such a way, however I do think Cher’s portrayal was worthy of note, and that she is better than many give her credit for. It’s unfortunate that the work she’s had done has now limited her ability as an actress but love her all the same lol.

Kidman won because Tom left her that year. Moore had two great performance, and one of them was in The Hours, which she was also nominated for and most both. Although she did finally win for Still Alice, it should have been her second.

  • @JamesHarris-hl2bm

Juan Bertini Yes, she was ok, but ok is hardly Oscar worthy. Both Streep and Moore were also in the film, and she looked like a ham next to them. She even has the distinction of being the only Oscar winner, to also be chosen for worst performance of the year, for the very same film, not to mention, the only Oscar winner unable to win any of the major critics awards. That night just have to do with the fact that Moore won most of them for Far From Heaven, and the other big one, New York, went to Diane Lane, although Heaven won Picture, director, supporting actress, supporting actor, cinematography, with Moore's performance finishing second there. I guess at this point, it makes no difference. They've both won. It's just that Kidman won for The wrong film. It should have been for To Die For.

The Oscars are stuck in a cycle of awarding someone that deserved an Oscar for a previous role, even though the role they win for isn't as good. And when they do win, they win over other actors that gave better performances that year. So those actors end up getting an award for another lesser role in a few years, and so on and so forth. Just remember that the Oscars are basically industry awards (which is why this happens), and not the be-all-end-all judgment of artistic talent.

Zarahemla Dela Cruz exactly her performance was a typical rom com role not even a gr8 women centric role which is the symbol of Best Actress at Oscars I really don't know who much bribe would have been given for her win

+gadget00 Lets not forget that the Academy usually tries to make amends when an Oscar doesnt go to a given actor/actress for a cleary better performance. Examples right above on this video: Judy Dench for the Queen in Shakespeare in Love, after losing an Oscar when she was, well, playing a queen.

+eyyodc Because Geraldine Page was long overdue her Oscar. They nominated her several times, and she finally won for that year. Sadly, she passed away the year after (1987).

It is just a standard linear biopic. The ending is misleading as Cash was back on drugs and suicidal again by the 80s.
