Top 10 Tips to Heal Baby Eczema

My baby has eczema 🥺
here are my top 10 things that helped reduce & control flare ups
1. eliminate all fragrance
Fragrance free detergents, no laundry softeners/sheets, hang dry clothing & fragrance free lotions and soaps.
2. switch to natural fabrics - no synthetics
Look for organic cotton, linen, bamboo and hemp.
3. bathe in oat baths
I use real oats. Run the bath water over the oats. Ideally bath should last at least 10 mins to allow for the oats to work their magic.
4. Moisturize (A LOT)
After baths, apply lotion right away to damp skin. I moisturize at every diaper change. & I apply lotion in layers. I let one layer absorb and then add another layer until his skin looks well saturated.
5. Slugging (apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly all over each night)
This one is actually backed by the AAD. They claim that it often works better than any lotion or cream. It seals moisture in as an emollient.
6. Dietary cuts (eggs and dairy are key triggers)
I’ve asked for a referral to an allergist. I think my son has many food triggers - definitely eggs and dairy for now.
7. Reduce dust
This is a tough one, but dust mites are a big trigger. Try to vacuum as often as you can. Put your focus on any carpets in bedroom where baby sleeps. I also just ordered an air purifier to place by his bed. And we switched to dust repellent sheets.
8. Add humidity through a humidifier
Being in Canada we have very dry winters and it’s only worse with the heater on all day.
9. Light layers at bedtime (overheating makes it worse)
10. Cover their skin (less chance to break skin barrier through itching)
Flare ups happen when there is a break in their skin barrier. The less they can itch the better.

    Salam🤍 oh that’s so interesting! I didn’t get that from our allergist or Pediatric derm. The allergist and derm actually suggested we have both a humidifier AND an air purifier. The air purifier I’ve absolutely loved. I ended up getting one for every area in our home off of Amazon. It needs to be HEPA grade to properly filter everything like dust and dander. My husband has asthma and he has seen a tremendous difference in our home since I got them also. That may be of help if you want to keep your humidifier. We also get dry cough/blocked nose without ours, but we also have very dry winters and that makes me sons eczema absolutely brutal. InshaAllah it helps🤍

I time my sons baths from 3-5mina max each night. I also don’t dry his skin out of the bath. I moisturize IMMEDIATELY and then sels that in with an emollient (we use Vaseline). It could be a reaction to oats. In that case I would opt for aquaphor or Vaseline to clear it up. My baby reacted to tubby Todd because of the coconut🥲 unfortunately some times things like oats, coconuts, milk, etc can be triggers for some babies. So the safest bet to clear it up then would be either aquaphor or Vaseline as they’re hypoallergenic 👍🏻

    What can I apply to a baby’s scalp with eczema?

  • @Coolbabymama

    @Coolbabymama

    Жыл бұрын

    I would use the oat milk bath water over my babies scalp. Follow that with a soft bristle brush for their hair and then I would put a pea size amount of moisturizer followed by a pea size amount of PJ and massage gently on the scalp. I also recommend changing their sheets to bamboo, satin or silk sheets to reduce friction while they sleep. Also opt for baby hats that are bamboo/satin or silk lined or made. That also helps protect them from itching during the day. I hope your baby feels better soon 🤍

I’m thinking he has psoriasis, I’m no doctor, but he gets these patches on his head that’s a really thick circle of skin that pills up easily and have like a wet or liquid substance underneath!? I do know it’s either eczema or psoriasis, but as soon as my daughter settles in her first apartment as a single mom she’ll find doctors in this area for the babies. She was living like an hour away so she has to change all the doctors so hopefully he’ll find out soon enough if he has eczema or psoriasis but for now, the Eucerin baby lotion is helping the skin along with the baby wash. Personally, for me the Eucerin, lotion, and sometimes I’ll use the dove body love sensitive care, lotion, fragrance free, which is much lighter consistency. Have both been working for me. I give all my kids a bath or shower (for my older ones) every day. I believe a 3-5 min max really helps keep their skin healthy. Especially for my kiddo with eczema. Just a quick bath and once a week with oats has been really helpful for reducing flare up’s. he’s currently two. I can only speak from my experience, but giving a daily bath has been a helpful practice in my home. I do know some experts recommend every other day, but definitely see that timed baths are helpful. Just be sure not to dry their skin out of the bath. Moisturizer while skin is damp and then seal with an emollient.

  • @Coolbabymama

    @Coolbabymama

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, the suggested dietary cuts are for breastfeeding moms. I was told to start with one at a time. That way I didn’t have to eliminate everything. My son was reacting to dairy, soy and eggs at that time. Since then he has very little reaction to any of those things. Just took time for his digestive system to mature and breakdown those proteins better. Disclaimer: Formula switches should be discussed with the baby’s pediatrician or doctor and same goes with any dietary changes a baby on solids may have should go through the doctor.

    My baby is always itching her face and head all the time please tell me that is this will be stopped sometime?

  • @Coolbabymama

    @Coolbabymama

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, but the key is to get that flare up resolved. Moisturize A LOT. Wet their face with a damp clean washcloth, do not dry, top with moisturizer (fragrance free is key) and then top off with an emollient (I use Vaseline or aquaphor). Keep their nails as short as you can. When you’re doing bathtime, take some of that oat infused bath water and gently dab it over the affected area. That’s how I got rid of it completely on my child’s face and head. As they grow if they have more than just baby eczema it may spread to other regions. Eczema is one of those things that needs a lot of maintenance to keep flare ups away. It’s tough, I know, but you’ve got this! And I hope your baby feels better soon 🤍

They say most babies will outgrow eczema by age 1, if not by then, more will outgrow it at puberty and the remainder will have it as a lifelong skin issue. Some will go long periods of time without any flare ups and then flare up (what feels like) suddenly out of nowhere. Currently, we have managed my sons eczema and he hasn’t had many flare ups. 👍🏻

    I listed common triggers. It doesn’t mean if someone has eczema then they have all of them or any. It’s just a good place to start. Test elimination a week one at a time. If reaction decreases continue to cut it out. If reaction persists bring it back. That’s what we were advised by the Pediatric allergist.

    No I did not. I was trying to avoid them, because over time they can thin the skin and also they’re the type of medication where your body can adapt to it and need higher doses. The dermatologist I took my son to agreed that I can try these methods and use medication sparingly if needed. Thankfully we haven’t had to resort to them following this protocol. Although my sons eczema type is considered moderate/severe. He’s currently 1 1/2 years old and still has flare ups from time to time - depends on the trigger. Winter was very dry this year, so took time finding the right moisturizers to bring that down. I’ll try and post an update soon🤍

    My babies all take probiotics. Eczema is often genetic. We have asthma, allergies and eczema on both sides of our families. Also, my baby at this time period was exclusively breastfed & breastmilk has an abundance of benefit to a baby developing digestive system.
