If you can join a union hall for carpentry I'm not sure how old you are but listen to a 38 year old who's been around the block an runs has his own business as a GC but mainly a subcontractor for framing, siding an finish work, if your 18,19,20, 30 years from now you could be retired with a full benefits an a hell of a retirement, then entire time your in the union you'll be safe an never have to take some of the risk that come with residential work, plus the pay is phenomenal!!! Maybe 4 years till your a journeymen but you'll be making $40 plus dollars an hour with full benefits, 401k an retirement, no residential business is going to give this to you. Be retired by 50 an live your life!!!

Been working like Larry for years! He's old school and damned good too. Still grafting and sharp as a knife when this video was filmed. Total respect for him! I've worked in Germany, Holland, New Zealand and the USA as well as serving my apprenticeship in the UK and working on various kind of projects. I have learned techniques from all over the place but still adopt this fail safe method when it comes to framing! I would never work with two lines snapped, why would you need to? If the timber lines up to one line then in theory it should be right! If it's right on one line but not on the second then that's a timber discrepancy and that's easily detectable when inspecting your materials! These old boys cant be wrong if they're still doing it! Hats off to Larry Haun!

Sorry only just seen your message. When I first worked in Germany I could already count in German and new a few words from my dad who was based there when in the armed forces. I just began to pick the language up myself then. The basics came very quickly out of necessity and the rest just followed. Although my German is very slangy I can hold a conversation with most people and work and converse well in construction speak! As for Holland, there is a connection with German but the Dutch people don't like to convert directly to German. They're mainly very good English speakers in Holland so it's rare for anyone who speaks English to encounter language problems there! Hopes this helps you. Happy New Year.

I worked for a company that was based in Nijmegen in Holland when first working in Germany. German companies couldn't hire seasonal workers back then so they got round it by hiring via Holland. Later I worked through UK based companies. Parkstone European and Brobar construction both of which I believe have folded but you could always google them. Nowadays you can search jobs on line for anywhere in the EU or go in the job center or whatever it is they call it now. I enjoyed most of it. Germany was much harder work but Holland could be frustrating trying to get things done especially on huge sites as they are so laid back. Good luck.
