Getting tattoos as a black person, it's important to find an artist who understands color theory. I have a few color tattoos that wouldn't have come out half as well if I didn't have artists that took the time to figure out what colors work on my skin. Ask to see healed work on darker skin. Ask for their methods on tattooing darker skin, especially if color is what you're looking for.

Same! A lil tip I use that can help keep strangers from chatting you up is to wear headphones, especially the over-the-ear kind. You don't even have to have music on, and people will just usually assume you can't hear them and leave you alone. Of course this doesn't always work, like if you're at your job or something. Touch without consent is infuriating! I used to be more timid, but now I firmly say "don't touch me" and I'll pepper spray a mf'er if I have to! 😂

Ooh something that is important is : hydrate your tattoos even after yeeeears of having them ! The ink under your skin is not drying, it will move with time so the more hydrated your skin is, the better it is. Don’t need to over do it, but like once a day or every two days is good :) And put SUNSCREEN (SPF 50 is the best) on your tattoos when exposed in the sun or else the ink will change color to like a greenish tint. Don’t hesitate to put sunscreen again during the day if you’ve especially exposed it a lot (ex : at the beach, during hiking…). Take good care of your tattoos, you pay a lot of money for it so make sure it was worth it ^^

@@clarkbowler157 I kinda wish I had chosen a different spot for one of my tattoos, later on I found a design that would make more sense in that spot than what I got. So I would say that if you want to get tattooed in a visible spot that is symmetrical to the other side of your body (like collarbone, ribs, sternum, shoulder blades, biceps, and upper thighs) then think about what you would want on the other side as well, and if you want those places to look similar, like the size and style of tattoo. Always think ahead and dont just think about your next one, right now I have three thought out for the future. And dont get tattoos impulsively, that's what I did with my third one. I saw a post on pinterest of bubbles on a girls collarbone, so I drew up a design and had bubbles tattooed there. Completely forgetting that I have dragons tattooed on the other collarbone, and that butterflies would have made much more sense in that area. If I had thought that through then my tattoos so far would be more consistent and read better

The friend/stranger answer is such a good idea. I have a clipper ship and underwater scene on my right arm which I give significant meaning to, but when my band played a yacht club everyone thought I was a sailor. I just rolled with how much I loved boating as a kid and left it at that. No need to tell strangers what your tattoos mean to you. They can appreciate them for how they look and let that be it.

I'm surprised so many people don't consider placement in relation to possible future tattoos. Concerns about placement (and by extension theme cuz I want tattoos that all work together to form a larger coherent art piece) are one of the main reasons I haven't gotten any tattoos yet. Also I'd love to hear why you dont want to use numbing cream anymore. That's an interesting choice.

I thought that's all it would ever be, so I didn't plan for anything else. Well ... over a dozen tattoos later, they are randomly placed because I was in denial about getting addicted to them. Personally, I don't find getting tattooed THAT painful and I've been tattooed on most parts of the body (except for the whole armpit, that would not be fun). Laser removal really hurts. Feels like getting splattered with hot bacon. Caved and used numbing cream for that! As for the itching, I use ice (not directly, with cloth) on the itchy parts and/ or cortisone cream. Cortisone cream doesn't affect the color or anything of the tattoo and can give you some serious relief. The slapping technique will only make the itching worse, after the initial relief. Great list, I really wish I had known how tattooed I would get - but there was no way to know! 🔟

Honestly I wish I’d had more confidence to say something when it comes to #5. While I do genuinely like the tattoo now, it is admittedly much different to the aesthetic I originally wanted. I’d shown the artist a bunch of photos of ones I liked (I wanted a geometric arrow) and literally all of them were more delicate, fine line, flowy type designs, but he came up with a more ‘standard’ geometric look. I changed one thing, and then went with that. I wish I’d said to him, “no, this clearly isn’t the aesthetic I wanted, please change it.” But as it was my first tattoo I had no idea what was appropriate in terms of changing designs, and my social anxiety was a bitch at the time, so I didn’t want to rock the boat. Again, now I do love it and I’m kinda glad I never spoke up, but it is something I’ll always have in the back of my mind.

I definitely have high pain and itching tolerance, so to me those are non issues. But I do recognise that not everyone registers and handles pain the same way. Personally would say if you don't have issues with wounds and scratches, you're probably fine. If you're rarely injured or can't handle it well, beware. A tattoo is just a type of wound, treat it as such. And something for hypersensitive people: it is a scar, no matter what you do, it can start itching when you're having an off day, even after years.

Omg yes for the explaining what you want part, i try to find photos of tattoos my artist has done themselves, and use that to point out what im looking for. For 1, you should like the other work your artist does but for 2 i find its a super easy way to explain the levels of shading/detail i want and since the artist has done the reference, they pick up on that pretty easily. 🔟

Stumbled on to your channel and just wanted to say I love how soft spoken you are. It’s very relaxing! Also, as a teen I wanted tattoos.. but I am soooo indecisive. I had and still have a big fear of doing something and spending my life regretting it, almost as if in a past life I had gone to jail for life or something. Anyways, tattoos are stunning, although I don’t think I’ll ever have one.

I'm not very good at visualizing my tattoos, and none of them look like what I imagined them before getting them. And honestly, that's for the better. I sat with my ideas for a long time and looked for the right artists I felt I could trust with the specific idea. I love how they turned out and the people around me are absolutely in love with the visible one. (that's also an easy 'stranger answer' tattoo). So choosing the right artist is number 1 for me. Nr2 is definitely that you can take painkillers before/while getting tattooed. Wish I knew that before getting my whole side done.

I dont want a full sleeve but a sleeve that kind of looks like a sticker sheet full of cute colorful space themed tattoos. This way i can slowly add onto it! And yeah, i thought getting a few is okay but i really am getting addicted. I got my first tat in september and my next one is in a few weeks. After that i'll probably wait for at least half a year

I got my first ever tattoo for my birthday this March, done by a friend. I've seen the tattoo work he's done on himself and on his girlfriend (my best friend) and neither of them mentioned ever having any complications, so I wasn't expecting any issue. The tattoo is a simple treble clef design on my wrist. Nothing fancy or elaborate, only about two inches of mostly line work and one slightly larger shaded area. The tattooing process went well, it came out looking great, and for the first two weeks, everything was totally fine. I had no redness or swelling, it never got itchy or anything, it was just a bit tender, as expected, and I thought I had won the tattoo lottery. Then, after two weeks of having absolutely no issues with the tattoo, I woke up to an intense shooting pain in my wrist that radiated through my entire hand and arm. I can't even begin to describe the pain in words, but it was debilitating and pain medications did nothing at all to help. I ended up with my arm in a brace for several weeks because bending it even a little bit was excruciatingly painful. When this all started, I did a little bit of research to see if this was a known side effect of tattoos and found a lot of articles of other people claiming to have the same problems after a new tattoo, and while it seems like it hasn't yet been officially confirmed whether or not the tattoos were the direct cause of the reaction, I feel like it's a risk more people should be aware of. The saddest part for me is that portion of my tattoo didn't quite stick, probably because it was over a scar, and I was aware of that risk with covering a scar, so I was fully expecting to have to get it touched up anyway, but after all of that pain, I don't think I want to risk going through all of that again to get it fixed. I also had other tattoo ideas in mind that would've meant so much to me, but I don't want to risk crippling any other limbs for it. I really wish I had known of that possibility before I committed to the tattoo. It probably wouldn't have changed my decision, but at least I might've been prepared for it

I'm very used to the itchiness because I have ezema so I can deal with that. Only thing, is I have to be really careful where I get a tattoo to make sure it won't wreck due to ezema. That part sucks because the placement is always limited but I'd rather not have an ezema patch on a tattoo no thank you lol.

I can totally relate! I’ve had eczema since I was around 7-8 years old. (I’m 28 now) And I’m about to get my first tattoo next month but definitely had to take into consideration the spots where my eczema commonly flares up. So avoiding bends of my arms and legs😅 it does limit the placement options but the eczema would wreck it 🥲

Another thing to consider is the longevity of the subject matter. Tattoo designs and styles that have been around for a long time are probably going to look better to you in 30 years than a pop culture or funny meme tattoo. Just something to consider because Ive done funny party tats and thankfully they were all easy to cover.

For anyone dealing with the itch from a tattoo healing or a bug bite; COLD! Something that's really cold like an ice pack or cold can of soda will help. (Used this for both my tattoos healing and when I got really bad bug bites) But yeah.. slapping it repeatedly can help but it can also cause irritation if it's on a healing wound like a tattoo. It's probably not going to cause a lot of harm as long as you're not crazy with it though

There are shops on every block downtown where I live, so after I got a bunch of tattoos, the only sort of different people have treated me, is asking why so many of them are bad... absolutely same! I found out that a lot of the itching comes from how the artist shaves the area. From my experience most artists just go gentle zigzack for shaving and it makes the itchiness way worse, for me at least. I explain to my tattoo artists to shave just in one direction now.

I am the same way. I found an artist that seemed okay on Instagram and booked a really simple ankle tattoo with her. She did it so fast and she was so nice and now I just go to her and have gotten much bigger pieces that took a lot longer. I think it's like trying anyone new, new doctors, new dentists, new hair salons, it's scary at first because you don't know the person and don't know what to expect, but then it gets easier. I got my first one during covid so I couldn't bring anyone but a lot of places will let you bring someone if that makes you more comfortable and they can help advocate for what you want if you think you won't be able to speak up. I also didn't get my first one until I was 31, so I didn't exactly rush it, I think sometimes new stuff gets a bit easier when you get older because you've been in more new situations.

I always tell people to look at older magazines and books for tattoo inspiration because a lot of those print media records of tattoo aged pretty well. There are some exceptions in the late 90s and 00s but for the most part the thing people need to know before getting tattooed is that a design needs to look good on the skin/body. Not every idea is going to translate as a tattoo well.

What I suggest is if you’re getting a big piece done plan it so that you have time to rest after the session. Bigger tattoos take hours to make and enduring the pain for so long is very tiring. I've used Second Skin for three tattoos and there was ZERO ITCH! I'm assuming the itch comes from skin drying out and scabbing. The lymph fluid that is usually soaked up by gauze is held in and covers the tattoo while it heals.

Ok, so I am an extremely touchy person. If I touch one blanket in the store I have to touch one of each color even though I know they will all feel the same, and for some textures, mostly new or different, it is not enough for one hand to experience it, both have to. That being said I totally get the desire to touch peoples tattoos even though I know it doesn’t feel any different. I also know that’s it’s not ok to just go around and touch people. I seriously don’t get why people think it’s ok

OMG I have the same thing!! I'm autistic and a mix between sensory avoidant and sensory seeking, so I sometimes have to use both hands to feel something to actually understand the texture. I actually asked my mom when I was younger if I could feel her tattoo, and she let me! It just felt like normal skin, if not a bit smoother because of the amount of lotion you should put on. I'd absolutely never ask a stranger to feel their tattoo, that's so weird...

I got my first tattoo almost two weeks ago and I'm proud to say that I knew about almost all of these beforehand. 😊 Maybe it's because my tattoo is not too big and the line work is thin, but I didn't really experience much itching at all. And, it never scabbed. Some dead skin and ink did peel off, but that's about it. Monday will be the two week mark and I'm really happy with how it looks so far! I've been babying it quite a lot though and I'm a bit nervous to start treating that area of my body (my shoulder) how I would normally. Mainly, going back to wearing a backpack instead of using an eco bag on the opposite shoulder. 😅
