Can make your own waterproof matches by dipping the matches in wax or nail polish. I prefer the box of matches that comes with 300. Can also make an oil lamp - mason jar with a lid, mop head for the wick (the white yarn ones), cooking oil.

A mop head that is 100% cotton (40 strands) provides you with 40 long wicks or 80 candle wicks. Baby oil does not go bad. Tuna cans with oil can be turned into oil lamps after you eat the tuna. Get one of your wicks and soak it in the oil. Use the can lid to encase the wick and add baby oil to top up as it burns.

Highly suggest folks get a Benadryl (dyphenhydramine) for allergic reactions and bug bites in tablet and also ointment form (depending on what type of reaction you're treating. Also, an antibiotic ointment for cuts and scratches. The first aid kit can be just about FILLED from the Dollar Tree. I'm a nurse and a freak about the first aid kit.

Vaseline soaked cotton balls catch fire quick. I have magnesium fire starters for less than matches that might not work if they get wet.

He mentioned a warm meal being psychologically healthy When he was talking about the ramen noodles is absolutely true. When I was in the military there were times even during simple training operations where we were absolutely miserable trying to stay level headed in freezing rain after being awake for 30+ hours and eating nothing but cold MREs but sometimes we would have the opportunity for a hot meal when the situation allowed, even if it was just by warming up our MRE and it’s so nice when you’re stressed and cold and wet and miserable to just eat a hot meal. It was never particularly good food considering it was all just warmed but it felt so good to have one of the basics of civilization in those moments that it was almost necessary for survival.

So true just look at back east right now. I hope most take this viddie to heart there if they prepped with just the basic survival items. This is a bad winter and people are dying from it. Candles should always be a staple and even cheap Batts come in handy as the power grid can Black out, look for a old school transistor radio just to have news and info and get a mini camp stove or sterno cans to at least heat up a can of soup.

They also have pretty bright headlamps and flashlight/lanterns for a 1.00 and sharpening stones and bags of coffee and creamer. Pencil sharpeners and floral wire. Skip the duct tape bcz it's not any good. Get gorilla tape bcz it actually sticks to stuff.

They have a 4x6 tarp thats good for the price. A couple makes a decent if snug shelter. Now the duct tape im iffy on. The black heavy duty us3 real good but the grey tape is kinda weak and more for arts And crafts.

Ramen noodles are good for stretching food. 2 packs of ramen,can of chicken, can of vegetables and can of stock with water. You can make a good size pot of soup to fill hungry bellies.

I am with Cathy. Time to time we do upgrades Ramen for non-survival purposes. I toss the packet and use stock, egg and vegetables . We typically do everything low sodium versions. But this video is for survival. I can’t see how worrying about sodium induced heart attack overshadows starvation. Go for other balanced foods it you are in high risk.

Post covid I'm finding it harder to find. A year ago it was everywhere

The sticky part of bandaids can be cut into strips and used as butterfly strips to keep a deep cut closed and reduce bleeding in extremis. I used to work as an infection control nurse, the best body wipes have chlorhexidine in them. They kill not only the bacteria that can make you ill but the ones that cause BO! I have quite a stash of ‘Freshwipes’ which are huge and juicy. They got us through a period with no bathroom during renovations through the hottest weeks of the year a couple of years ago. They are more expensive than wet wipes but one wipe cleans the whole body thoroughly- seriously.

Hi there. One other thing to include in the kit is a squeeze bottle like the ones you use for ketchup. You can take a quick shower and use two to four filled bottles to do the job. All you do is get a sponge and soap it up with two to three drops of liquid soap ( not too much or it will be hard to rinse) scrub starting with your face, then arms, torso, legs, leaving groin area last. Rinse each section as you go. It will make you feel decent and freshen up. Use the shower curtain from DT to have a privacy screen. Just hoping no one needs to do it this way. Stay safe out there. A spray bottle works well, too. Especially as a critical spot cleaner. Also, get some of those “magic towels” that expand with water. Dry, they store easily without taking up too much space. They can be rinsed out afterwards, and be reused. They are also good as emergency toilet paper and fire starters.

@@CabinGRL Carbs will keep you alive until you can get some source of protein. You can exist on carbs fir a couple of months but you will have problems after that. You are right about canned meats can be a ready source of protein. You need red meat in order to have clear cognitive abilities. Vitamin B6 can only be derived from meats and without it you cannot think clearly. That is why all cults feed their acolytes vegetables and no meat. People are more docile without B6. There is a synthetic B6 but the body doesn't use it very well. Most is excreted by the kidneys. The best source is beef liver followed by chicken and deer liver.

I worked in the swimming pool industry for 5 years, and now Wastewater treatment for the last 20. The thing that’s important to remember about bleach is that it loses its strength over time due to the Chlorine gassing off. The general rule of thumb is it loses about 50% of its strength about every 30 days. My experience is that it’s not nearly that much if stored in an air tight container in a cool dark place. My advice is to replace it about every 3 months since it’s for emergency use.

@@Paislywalls4767 you’re welcome. Most people only view bleach in its ability to bleach clothes which it will do at far lower strength. If you really want to get more bang for your buck get your bleach from a swimming pool supplies store. The bleach you buy off the shelf at the store in the laundry detergent isle ranges from about 2 to 6% sodium hypochlorite which is the active ingredient in bleach. I’m pool stores the bleach they sell is 12% which is industrial strength, so it will last longer and use a little less for emergency use.

@@carrieporter3401 if you’re talking about the kind for swimming pools they have other chemicals in them that would make them less than ideal for sanitizing water for drinking, and their concentration of chlorine is much higher than bleach. Same applies for any form of dry chlorine for swimming pool use. If it came down to necessity you would want ones made of “calcium hypochlorite”. It doesn’t have the UV stabilizers that Trichlor and DiChlor have. Trichlor and Dichlor is also very acidic where Cal Hypo is very alkaline.

Always assume that "flushable" wipes are not flushable. Don't ever flush them. They will clog up your sewer pipes, or get into the sewer system and clog it up.

@@margritpiepes8242 My plumber said bathroom tissue only. No Kleenex, no wipes, no tampons. He said the low water flushes don't move stuff all of the way down the pipe. Try taking a vitamin or prescription with 1 tsp of water. It will get stuck in your throat.

Better yet don’t flush anything. Burn it. If you have to flush the TP with waste, which I do, consider that 1/2 of the TP you flush on the daily if you’re a female. During grid down no one will be getting their septics cleaned out. Do it now and throw away, not flush away, the TP to save the septic

You have some good ideas, except for two things I disagree with. Those little generic batteries including Panasonic which is a name brand generic you say to keep for backup batteries. The whole purpose of having backup batteries is so something will work. Those little Dollar Store batteries often times will not work and when they do they don't last very long they are of the lowest quality. If you're in a situation where you need something to work you should Pony up and buy duracells. They are known to last for years on the Shelf. And they last a lot longer when used. They are even better than energizers. They are the only kind I buy. In fact when I buy something that comes with batteries I throw the generic batteries away because all they will do is go bad and corrode possibly ruining whatever device you have them in with the exception of the television remote. I will use them until they go bad and then I throw them away as soon as the warning light comes on. If you have a bug out bag that means everything in that bag could be keeping you alive. You can buy a bunch of cheap things but don't scrimp on something like batteries. A cheap flashlight will work, but only if it has good batteries. A radio will work as long as it has good batteries and the same is true with anything else. The golden rule is don't screw around with cheap batteries. I don't know who you're going to barter a pack of dollar batteries that everyone knows are unreliable but, if you want to buy a bunch to give away I'm sure they're better than no battery at all but they sure are not something I would want to stock up on to depend upon. They will cost you more money in the long run even in a non-emergency situation. My next disagreement is when you said put your dirty wet socks in a ziplock baggie. Maybe you don't realize this but that's exactly how they mold, the best thing to do with your dirty wet socks is hang them on the outside of your pack to dry. You can even tie them on to the outside if you're afraid of losing them. But they really need to dry that way if you need to you can wear them again. Now if you just want to wash a pair of socks a little baggie would be a perfect place to wash them. Put several drops of bleach in the water and then put your socks in there close the bag and shake it around. Maybe leave them in there 30 minutes and then remove them and rinse them out. The bleach would kill any bacteria on the socks and wash the Dirt away. Having clean socks is very important. You go screwing around with dirty socks and you'll wind up with some foot problems and find yourself unable to walk. In fact you might want to consider buying a dollar container of foot powder to put in your shoes to help keep them dry. Two things you absolutely want to keep clean are your socks and your underwear. Even if you just rinse them out in river water and set them to dry in the Sun. You want to get that bacteria and dead skin cells off of it. I would not want to eat ramen noodles everyday either but they are high in calories. It depends on what you have to do to survive but they do throw a lot of calories at you. Also you can add things to them to make them a lot better. You can cut up beef jerky, or a roll of summer sausage. Have a little bag of chips you could crush and put in there. They even have dehydrated refried beans, so you can make some pretty interesting meals that are high in calories pretty cheaply without carrying a lot of stuff. And still have some nutritional value. They sell small cans of corn or peas. You can mix that with ramen noodles. You can also mix them with a can of soup which is typically pretty low in calories but can have a lot of nutritional value. It's not a sexy meal if you're making a survival video. But it will keep you alive and keep you going. And I would rather have too many of them than not enough because those things you really will be able to barter for other things. Another item that is overlooked but also available there is corned beef hash, roast beef hash and sausage hash. And let's not forget spam. For a dollar you're probably only going to get a single serving instead of an entire can. But you can cook them and throw them in a ramen noodle and it tastes amazing. You can buy a little bottle of barbecue sauce and pour on it and that is pretty excellent too. A tiny bottle of barbecue sauce could be mixed with close to a dozen meals if you don't overdo it. Another good thing to have you can get there is Vaseline and cotton balls. Which you can store in one of your Ziploc baggies. You roll the cotton ball in your Vaseline and stick it in the baggie. They make excellent fire starters. They help with chapped lips or chapped skin, and you can put it over a wound to keep dirt and bacteria from actually getting inside of the wound. They're also good for removing ticks, by using the Vaseline to cover the tick it will cover up his breathing tube and they will let go trying to get air. It also helps with dry skin, or any chafing you might have. You can also use them to oil your knife or ax if it gets wet. Just take thin layer of the Vaseline would protect it from rusting. And you still have the cotton ball with plenty more on it to start a fire. Another item you can get at the dollar store is dental floss. Which is good for oral hygiene, but you can also use it to tie stuff together. Such as making a shelter. The more weight involved the more times you want to wrap it usually a double pass would be more than enough and they usually come with 100 to 150 ft of dental floss in a pack. I don't see anyone doing that on the videos but when I was a kid in the Cub Scouts they taught us to do that. With either dental floss or kite string. Kite string is good but the weather will destroy it quicker than a wax covered dental floss string. You can even fish with dental floss if you need to. And you can sit alarms around wherever you are camping by tying them between two points with used pop cans with rocks in them attached so that they will rattle if anyone trips over the trip line. I'm sure there's dozens of other uses for it as well. I know it will cut PVC pipe. I always keep a container of dental floss taped onto my knife sheath. They also sell safety pins. They are great for everything from patching up holes to picking out splinters, or even fishing if you didn't have any hooks. You can also use them to attach other items to the outside of your bag, and they are easy to carry as you can just attach them to your bag. And let's not forget duct tape. If your shoes fall apart it will tape up your shoe. It will cover holes in your clothing. You can even make a little bucket out of it to carry water. Or anything else. You don't get that much for a dollar but you can get some. They're great for patching damage to your tarp until you can fix it better. Which you should carry some needles and thread anyway and if you don't want to carry thread you can use your dental floss to sew with. The dental floss is sterile so you could even sew up a wound if you needed to. Foil is another thing you should get. Not only can you put food into the foil and cook it over the fire including soup if necessary. It can also be used as a signaling device or as a Windbreak around your fire. You can even make a small stove out of it to cook bread. A little bag of flour is also great to have as all you have to do is add water and you can make bread in several different ways. You can even put the right amount in several Ziploc bags like serving amounts and add anything extra you want to to the bread from salt to sugar yeast, raisins, whatever you fancy. And when you need it just Add Water work it in the bag until it becomes dough and then you could even wrap it around to stick to cook it or cook it on a grill, in a pan or like a biscuit. Sometimes they sell a seasonal item which is a little wire mesh for cooking things on. It would make an excellent Grill without spending the money to buy a fancy one. And they also have handkerchiefs, which are good for multiple reasons anywhere from making a bandage, wiping your face or keeping sweat out of your eyes. Or kind to a limb of a tree to find your way back to the trail during a bathroom break. They're also good for helping you wash dishes. And last, 50 gallon trash bags. You can cut them apart and make a tarp, or help you with your shelter. You can fill them up with grass or leaves and make a mattress to sleep on, you can put your stuff in it and protected it against rain, or water crossings, or you can cut holes in either side and one in the top and wear it as a raincoat. But having several of them is always a good thing. In conclusion there are a lot of things at Dollar General or the dollar store that you could use if you have the skills and knowledge to know how to use it.

A lot of great info, but I have to disagree about Duracell batteries. They USED to be my go-to long term storage batteries, but no more. I lost several high-end flashlights and a couple of radios in my preps to Duracell batteries. Duracells batteries have either swelled up or leaked after a couple of years in storage, either making battery removal impossible or destroying the device from corrosion. Duracells didn't used to do that, but they do now. I have not had the same problems with Eveready or Rayovac batteries. I don't know about shelf life, but at least they don't destroy the device they are stored in (yet). Duracell was my brand of choice, but no more. I can't trust them. What I actually do these days is to store batteries (of any brand) in original packaging with but not IN the device they are meant to power. Not convenient, but the worst time to discover that failed batteries have destroyed your electronics is when you need that device the most!

Thought id pass these tips to you guys also - in girl scouts we made fire starters before we went camping. Take a paper egg carton (find a friend, relative, neighbor or a business that will give you sawdust or barter for it) fill each cup almost to the top next melt either candle wax or the blocks of wax you can get and pour on top of each fire starter let it dry then dip the entire fire starter in the wax. It is now waterproof. Next take your matches and dip them in wax. You can not start a fire with wet kindling or wet matches.

Remember. Crisco has a candle flame dotting the eye on the label for a reason.

@@Eaglemadhatter The American Academy of Dermatology Association suggest simply using a thin coating of petroleum jelly (from a tube, not jar) after soap and water unless you have a weakened immune system. This is based on the idea that the injured person cleans their body and especially the wound daily and that the bandage is changed regularly and whenever it becomes soiled or wet as well. They also offer advice about when someone SHOULD use antibiotic ointments. Either way, Hydrogen Peroxide and Alcohol should definitely be avoided in casual use for minor cuts and scrapes.

I would suggest getting the freezer bags, they are thicker and much stronger so will last longer. Also don't buy the zipper style they don't seal won't last. Always store the lighters in a sealed bag just in case.

Everything you mentioned can be purchased at Walmart. I've priced stuff from Walmart vs Dollar store and are mostly cheaper at Walmart & lot's more variety. I don't trust Rayovac batteries. They've destroyed more of my flashlights, radios, and other small appliances than I care to count. Put fresh Rayovac batteries in a flashlight (or anything really) and a month later it quits working. Open it up to find out why and it's entire battery compartment is completely corroded. It isn't just my experience but other members of my extended family as well. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing they're good for is heavy ammunition in a sling or slingshot or tossing in a fire if you need a distraction. I assume they can at least explode properly.

It's a good idea to not leave batteries in anything that isn't used regularly. Regardless of the brand. Rechargeable NiMh batteries are the best and won't leak.And because they can be recharged a lot of times they are better for the planet than alkaine batteries !

Cotton balls, petroleum jelly, toilet paper, cooking pan, knife, can of chili, rice, spoon, aspirin, emergency poncho. You will stay warm, means to starting a fire, chili to cook a hot meal in a container(pan also to boil water), spoon to eat with, knife to make kindling and open can, poncho to keep you warm, toilet paper for a little civility when releasing yourself, aspirin to relief the head ache from thinking about how miserable you are!

Best lighters are those long BBQ fire lighter type I find .. Herbal Tea bags are useful ...no need for milk or sugar and they have good medicinal properties I use them in a thermos flask and can get 4-5 cups from one bag

Generic hydrogen peroxide is also a good idea to get at the Dollar tree. Also generic Pedialyte to keep your electrolytes up that can be added to water to stay hydrated. It's not the name brand Pedialyte but a few ounces of it in each liter of water will keep your electrolytes up and it's a lot cheaper at the Dollar tree than it is at a regular store and works for adults as well as children. Gives your immune system an extra boost of electrolytes when stressed during a shift situation.

Get the powder versions and they'll last a lot longer and weigh less for a bug out bag

I'm not sure if you can get them at the dollar tree, but I've found a couple packages of pop tarts make for a good addition to any camping or survival kit meant for a few days. They are light, calorie dense, and a little sugar can help stay depression for a little longer as well. And hey! The packaging can be used as an emergency signaling device

@@geminilove4682 Well, if it's naturally formed sea salt there will probably be some other content in it. The question is more about how much. I have been pretty lucky so far. You want to see purpose placed sand sometime... check out modern charcoal briquettes.

Something pretty cool I found today at Dollartree was one of those heaters used for food trays. For only a buck, not a bad little thing to have for a fire!

May i suggest glow sticks? Glow sticks made a huge difference when we had dust storms that knocked out power. My kiddo was just terrified, the sky was burnt orange and the house shook.. A few water bottles with glow sticks were calming and a fast light source.

Ramon noodles and Dr. Pepper got me through college.

YES! I keep four cheap solar lights in old glass jars in my east window. I use those flat glass marbles to stand them up. They don't last all night, but good for the evening when our lights go out! (Happens often with old power lines and windy weather)

I use Ramen for a filler. Mixed with Spam, Tuna, Chicken or even beans. It gives you filler as well as the protein from the meat or bean choice. I fully agree with you, not a great choice for long term. Yet for a week or so. I’m good with it. I appreciate your segments. Much respect to you and yours, God Bless you all.🙏🏼

I buy dried vegetable mix at bulk barn which is very cheap and store in small jars or plastic containers, and buy the flakes of chicken, turkey, ham, and tuna at the dollar store. You can add these to the ramen noodles to make a better meal, and if you buy the instant noodle bowls then all you need is a little boiling water and you have a full meal that is warm and filling, and kids usually love it!! It has more nutrients than the ramen alone and adds quite a bit of flavor. Plus you can vary the flavor of noodles and type of meat and vegetables you use for more variety. If you are using for a home emergency then you can use canned veg and have more choices. I like the dried veg especially in a bug out bag or emergency kit for the car as it is light and takes very little space.

a tent in the home is an excellent idea. It is one of things we discussed during USN survival training.

Have had a Bug Out bag for ages. Using OTC medicine has been great for myself. I am 65years old, i use a stroller when i go anywhere, is a lifesaver for myself. Can sit on the foot rest, also works great for a walker. Have a small Service Dog, she jumps in it when there are other dogs are around. the dogs around here are intrusive. Double check your bag making sure everything is just how you need it.

I use my old wheelchair for shopping. I don't drive, I have to walk almost everywhere. I have a box that fits in the seat and string it in. I've been shopping like this almost two decades. I have a large " cold bag" from Costco that hangs on the back from the handles for my frozen and refrigerator stuff especially in summer. Works great 😃👍

I know how you feel about the intrusive dogs. I can relate, due to the rude behavior of the dogs who I encounter on my daily walk around the neighborhood. First they like to shout obscenities in an abrupt and harshly delivered foreign language. I can't understand a word they're saying but still they prattle on insecintly. Soon they become irritated and resort to communicating through body language when they realize there is a language barrier and begin to bombard me with rude requests for money and a ride to the store. I don't give them a dime because everyone knows that all dogs will only spend their money on drugs. I won't enable their downfall. Stay strong and don't give in to your local rude mutts.

Thank you! I learned long ago to be even basicly prepared. This was great info and inexpensive. People forget to just keep minimal supplies like, candles, matches/lighters, batteries, and water. I make sure these are in my car also, some energy bars and a sleeping bag can also come in handy. You just never know what mother nature might throw at you where I live.

You can dehydrate and put together little packets of veg to put in the Ramen. Dehydrate and seal them: Egg,mushrooms, spices,shredded veggies, even little shredds of dried meat.. we bought a dehydrator an a vacuum sealer

On the subject of bleach. On top of unscented, it also needs to not be the splashless. The added chemicals will make you quite sick. Same with the scents.

Bleach also has a short shelf life. Don’t stockpile it.

Pool shock is the proper way to do this, you just have to be sure you have the chlorine only shock. You then make bleach by rehydration of the shock, and then treat drinking water with the bleach. It’s not really a man-portable solution. You’ll need to have enough water for both parts of this equation.

Keeping some Bragg's Nutritional Yeast on hand will add a nice amount of extra vitamins & protein in 1-2 tablespoons. It can give ramen or other canned (savory) food a boost in nutrition. It's lightweight and can be transferred in a baggie (for carry / GH / BOB purposes). It doesn't really alter the original taste of the food much either.

My dollar store had disposable washcloths and I stocked up. Also since I live on the cost I could go to the beach and bathe in the ocean with biodegradable liquid soap that I have on hand. Also I have two five gallon containers that are food grade one is for collecting rainwater and yes I have a way of filtering it that is portable for drinking and the other is for collecting rainwater for bathing and flushing toilets. Both work well since I it rains a lot during the winter here. I also have a tent large enough to set up in my bedroom as a micro climate that I can move my bed into in the smallest bedroom of my apartment. That way I don't have to turn on the heat at night and save on my utility bill. I use the heater last month and it raised my utility bill $100 in one month just because my apartment runs on gas heat and hot water. I do have a camp stove and enough propane to last throughout the winter if needed. I also have a safe way of using it indoors so carbon monoxide does not build up and it doesn't start a fire. keeping it fire extinguisher for all types of fire on hand is also a good one now you can't get it at the Dollar tree but it's worth it. And now you cannot get a tent at the Dollar tree but since camping season is over for the winter months now would be a good time to get a tent on sale at Walmart off season. I also have a sleeping bag that my friend gifted me that has made for 40 below weather and will blankets to line it with. But the best thing to stay warm is my late husband's officers Navy pea coat jacket from the Vietnam era. I've had a few offers from people to buy that thing off me I will never part with it it is warm in the winter.

I keep a waterproof box full of extra gloves, hats, emergency kits, pair of waterproof boots & wool socks, jacket, some emergency food like tuna packs (lighter weight & easier to carry & won't rust like cans) protein bars & shakes, water, trail mixes etc. & another box with my sleeping bag & a waterproof blanket & a last small box with all my emergency tools like a small saw, screwdrivers, waterproof lighters can openers, solar & portable phone charger, rope & bunjee cords etc.both in my home & also in my car to be prepared wherever I am. I also keep EXTRA gloves & masks for OTHER people too.

Pretty good! Thanks! WOULD LIKE TO ADD: If you have no water for several days (or longer) in your home (it could happen...) paper cups (you can usually use them a few times) and plates, because you won't want to waste water washing dishes!

Added bonus is you can burn them when done.

Don't forget to put supplies in for something like a toothache or earache. Clove oil or Red Cross toothache medicine is an absolute must for a toothache. My mother used to heat up rice and put it in a sock if we got a neck pull in a muscle. It can also soothe an earache when placed lightly over the ear. You can easily heat rice up in a skillet or a can.

I recently stopped an earache with 2 drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide from a sterile dropper. Stopped the ache.

I’ve bought those small box matches & I found them to break easily. Also the flammable stuff that ignites rubs off quickly.

might want to add a can opener and some canned soup. to go along with those, maybe a steel cup to boil water/cook food. also, maybe cheap tea/coffee

I'm not saying like the literally put "water" in generic Pepto Bismol but you take a bottle oof name brand Pepto an slightly tilt the bottle from side to side you will see it's thick and it sticks a bit on the sides of the bottle and slowly drains down. Now take the genetic Store brand Pepto and do the same. You can tell it's diluted down with a bit of volume to it and when you tilt it the same way and yeah it might stick a little bit too the walls of the bottle but it's runny and it flows down back down into the bottle. Now take a bottle of Dollar Tree Pepto. It's basically looks like a translucent pink water and when you tilt the bottle the liquid inside just moves from side to side. If any sticks to the wall of the bottle it might be like water across car windshield with Rain-X on it.

@@JH-7878 it's a comfort blanket thing when people buy the name brands they think the generic brands are not going to work as good or aren't going to last as long. I do know that from experience at some medicines that are generic might not be as effective as the name brand but they do work. I come from a family where my family was always on a budget. So I understand of off-brand generic stuff being part of my daily routine even as an adult now. Yeah there are a couple 2-3 things items I do buy name brand (foods, household items, tools, etc) because I do know the quality of them and prefer to have them over generic stuff but if I'm short of cash I do get generic of them.

When I moved out on my own, when I was 17, I didn’t have a job yet. And I lived off of Ramen noodles for years. I’m not even exaggerating, and when I had nowhere to cook them, I would eat them raw. I’m still here, they may not have nutritional value, but it does the job.

My experience with the Scripto Lighters is they leak over time, and so I spend a bit more and only buy Bic brand. There are bargains at Dollar Stores, but Caveat Emptor, usually it's not the highest quality. Having been a prepper for over 40 years, the maxims "You Get What You Pay For" and "Buy Once, Cry Once" always applies.

Keep bottled water away from sunlight so the plastic doesn’t leach in the water. Sunlight breaks down plastics.

Glass adds weight but might be worth it to get a pint or quart jar since sunlight can also sterilize water. Takes 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight, but don't wait til you are out of water to begin replacing it. At home, you have the room for larger glass containers if you need other ways to sterilize water in a pinch.

Glad you mentioned feminine hygiene products. Something very overlooked when it comes to survival and bug out bags.

Exactly!! I hear so much about planning to bring your wife and kids but so many kits don't include feminine or really good hygiene at all! If that time of the month strikes, you are going to have a seriously bad time, it's wet, cold, and the smell may attract predators. I recommend menstrual cups for the blood but having tampons are space saving and can be unraveled to use for kindling, cotton balls, ect Pads are great but take up more room and are generally scented with chemicals and probably not the best to up against an open wound

When the dollar stores here in Phoenix had those wind-up portable flashlights, I bought 20.

in Russia we use 10-20 drops of iodine tincture per liter of water, and 1-2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide per liter of water for purifying. And the taste and nontoxicity of such methods definitely beats bleach. These solutions are cheap and common in Russia's drugstores, I don't know if that is the case in the West. As someone who drank both iodine and hydrogen peroxide water solutions for medical purposes for years, I definitely recommend these water purifying methods. Here's another good water solution for your health - sodium hydrocarbonate (baking soda) 1 tbsp per glass of water makes a nosewash for when you are sick and you need to get rid of pus building up in your nasal canals (yes, you can do it yourself to avoid maxillary sinusitis).

If you buy 35 per cent food grade HP 6 drops will make a gallon of water safe. Is healthy to your body unlike iodine and Clorox.

Dollar General stores usually have a $1 isle. You can get triple antibiotic ointment, soap and small packages of name brand items like bandages. I used this to fatten up my first aid kit. Also, most stores have gallons of water for a dollar or less.

I'm reading this a year later and thinking "Oh yes, the good old days, when a gallon of water was less than a dollar."

Dollar store has a lot of survival items. Water, bleach, sterno, candles, bandage, aspirin, creams for first aid, small bags for all kinds of things, survival blankets, rain parkas, clay pots and tea lights they make a great heater, bug spray, sunscreen, batteries, tarps, and the list goes on. I bought a backpack for my emergency kit. Also every family should have a emergency plan. With a place to go if separated. With the way the country is going I believe that this is important for everyone.

I buy the small tins of Dove or Nivea (when they have it) face moisturizer cream. After I use the cream I clean and store all sorts of things in them (Vaseline, medications, bandages, etc as they are waterproof and seal tightly. Because they are flat they take up less space in a travel or BOB.

Those aluminium baking dishes are great to fabricate a makeshift oven or stove.

You can call me crazy!!! But, I have chickens..so, the bags the feed comes in, I use those to put supplies of food in..they are thick..if someone breaks into my house, all they will see is chicken feed bags..do that makes a little sense..

In the fire source do buy some of the long lighters made for lighting stoves, BBQ grills. Those tall glass candles become hard to light. As the wax melts, have an empty jar prepared with a wick to drain that melted wax into to create a new candle. No wasted wax and you make those tall candles save you money. This also keeps that wax from drowning your current wick.

Put cayenne pepper in your bug out bag or first aid kit. It’ll stop bleeding and it will sterilize the wound. Use dryer, lint and wax to make a fire starter. Well started with Flint pretty easy. Use strikeable matches wrapped in toilet paper, duped into wax This is the wind proof and waterproof match.

Cayenne (tiny pinch of) and 3/4 inches of grated ginger infused in a pot of boiling water is a great pick me up if you feel cold or flu coming on. Steep for 10 mins, add honey for sore throat. If no pot you can use ginger tea bags and just add the cayenne, honey and hot water to the mug.

I have not tried it myself but folks on the internet claim that a person can cook food in a saucepan over candles like tea light candles,place a cooling grate over the lit candles place pan on grate. Boil water add ramen,can veggies,canned meat,and a jar of gravy,or Alfredo sauce. No need for Ramen seasoning packet,that is where most of the sodium is located! Hope this helps!

Buying the LED touch lights works wonders over a candle. Also a clay pot, put your candles inside and it gives off more heat.

@@chuckaule6292 It works best in a small, enclosed space. But, for me, the risk of fire negates the benefit of any heat output. One of the things I like to do is buy up a ton of Hot Hands at the end of Winter, so I have them for the next Winter. Put a couple of them in the bottom of your sleeping bag and it does wonders keeping you warm all night. Also, on cold mornings put one inside each glove on the BACK of your hands, and it helps a lot. If it gets too hot that way, you can remove them and put them in your coat pockets. You won't find Heat Lockers (hats, gloves and socks) at DT, but they're a great investment. I pretty much lived in my truck & in a tent for over a year, and tried a lot of things to see what worked and what didn't. It was a choice, it started off as a survival challenge to myself, then continued because I wanted to see if I could survive in ALL seasons. I started off using my house for water and showers, but by the time I decided to "move back in" I was hauling water from my son's house so I would know exactly how much I was using for various things (dishes, drinking, cooking, watering pets, baths, etc) and finding ways to cut back on what was being used. Yes, my family thought I was nuts, but I wanted to be sure that I COULD survive should a disaster actually happen. I live alone, so I am the only one my experiment actually inconvenienced -- but now I'm not afraid of a disaster OR of the grid going down. So, it was worth it to me.

@@sandym6760 Very smart. It would be wise for all of us to do this for at least a day or two. When most of us lose power for a couple of hours we feel so inconvenienced. Think we are going to have to start getting used to this kind of thing, the way things are good.

They occasionally have headlamps ,they work very well,I bought them to barter,though I have tactical headlights, these run on triple AAA batteries and are incredibly bright and have 3modes for 1.25. great deal.

You were talking about a First aid kit . And I wanted to see you tell single guys that you are gonna need larger things for larger cuts . And I learned from a old man that I worked with in the woods as a young man logging , He Said that most men won't think to put Famine minstrel pads in your bag . I know it seems funny to some men to go to the store and buy them . But I can say from first hand experience They can be a life saver . Just thought you should know . Most of my food here in the UK is tinned as it was cheap to buy good to eat and the can protects the food very well from lots of problems you might get. Bleach can also be brought in tablets which will keep a lot longer than the liquid bottles. I have some Mountain House food but they pulled out of the UK so I can no longer buy it here each time I have been in the USA I buy some and bring it back. Thumbs up and thank you for the video.

Shalom my friend .Sometimes the best candles along with food items at Dollar tree cost us nothing. We have many totes of candles which come form Dollar tree dumpster. Yes throws away much stuff in their dumpsters.

Ramen can be a solid survival food and can be nutritious, too. I preserve carrots (and other veggies from the garden) in my dirt floor basement. Slice a carrot and whatever fresh veggies you have, then add it along with a fresh egg (drop it in the pot and poach it - you want a boiled egg that's slightly runny). And only use half the flavor packet (too much salt). The result is delicious, calorie-dense, and more nutritious than processed MREs.

Guys just to say this the absolute best item to have in your arsenal for any bug-out bug in shtf situation is your own mind. And the way you can see to make ordinary items more extraordinary and more usable in any given situation. For example duct tape and paper towels will go a whole lot further than the Band-Aids that he suggested.... Using the matches that he had and dipping in in the candles that he also purchase would give you waterproof matches. Thinking outside the box in a survival situation means more and is more important than any piece of gear you can put inside your bag... Also research how you can get antibiotics without having a prescription, by purchasing fish and aquarium antibiotics, then download the fish to human dosage chart that you can find on the internet print that out and put that in your survival bag

That is great idea, i agree but not everyone good at that, a simple list to get now is a good idea . I wish you would make a survival book or pamphlet out of your great ideas for people like me without any, not everyone is good at or creative like you unfortunately.! Jr

I agree with your comments about the band aids, but I would suggest getting the ones that are antibacterial. Then you won't have to add another ingredient such as Neosporin or even honey to the wound. Mixing Ramen noodles with freeze dried veggies and chicken/beef can make an entire meal. You make a great point about standardizing on battery size. I have thrown so many flashlights away due to the odd battery requirements. Great tips...thanks and keep passing them on

By contrast, at least 1 survival expert (Cody Lundin) actually prefers these cheap, off-brand lighters to classic Bics because of the adjustable flame alone. For my own part, I've found that design easier to operate than that standard Bic.

@@TheSaneHatter interesting point about the adjustable flame! You can get those things huge if needed. I trust him 29395x more than myself. Is it the safety on the Bic that gives you issues? If so, those pop off easy with a key or something. I remove them from all mine.

@@TheSaneHatter I have deformed arthritic hands, and I simply can't use Bics at all. The cheap Dollar Tree lighters work well for me.

I have been watching your videos for a while now and your channel stands out as one of the most practical and best cost affordable prepping presentations I have reviewed! The dollar store addition is great! Especially to survive a short 2-3 day power outage! The addition of local hand made maps is a great way to include your kids in the process. Ferrous rods are ice but easiest is bic lighters like you state. Board games (cards) was a great addition.

Don’t forget a manual can opener. Very important!

I would recommend a good OXO can opener. They are durable, and are strong enough to get through deep rimmed cans.

Candles aren’t burning fossil fuels so there isn’t any carbon monoxide… however propane and kerosene heaters do

@@lucsmith2092 yes carbon dioxide is NOT carbon monoxide… the detectors you are referring to detects carbon monoxide from fossil fuels … not carbon dioxide.. we breathe out carbon dioxide … carbon monoxide is what kills us burning fossil fuels like kerosene and propane … unless you’re burning a couple hundred candles in your house you won’t suffocate from it EVER

@Zombiemom50 I'm afraid you have your science a bit mixed up. Anything that burns can and will produce CO and other combustion byproducts that are problematic, too. You should be aware of extra ventilation whenever you're burning anything unvented, indoors. I'm sure that in a modern house, a candle or two is fairly safe, but if you're approaching a dozen or more, then a CO monitor and cracking a window or two is in order.

From Florida here so for my region the two things you need to add to that list are sunscreen and mosquito repellent! Good information would love to see if you could make some prepping advice set up in different regions of the United States north east south east etc. etc.. Thanks!

Coconut oil repels mosquitos and is at dollar tree.

I like having ramen noodles in my bag because it's a good base. Noodles are very filling and if you got chickens you can add an egg to it amongst other things for nutrition.

Great vid sir, I agree 100%. That being said...going back to first aid and meds I recommend a generic triple antibiotic. Like you pointed out an infection can take you out of commission if not kill you. It's all about that generic Neosporin =)

I tested the no-name batteries. Worked longer than the Panasonic in my lantern!

Dollar tree is arguably my favorite store ever . . . Literally everything on this list I’ve prepped over time from the dollar tree just makes sense !

Agree, also like dollar general. They gave decent prices and have a whole section that is 1 dollar only. They have cleaning products, hygiene products, over the counter mds, ect.

Baby wipes instead of TP...They serve as clean ups too. waterproof container for matches. need a SEALED bucket for toilet.

My standard medicine bag for my bags have ibuprofen, acetaminophen, loperamide, and pink bismuth chewable tablets.

Thank you for this video. I have a system for home and bugout kits. I don't own a car, so I can only take what I can carry. I have 1 rolling carry-on bag, 1 Coleman insulated, fabric cooler with a cross-body strap & and a stroller for my cat that has extra storage underneath. Each bag is under 40 lbs and is stocked with enough things for two people and 1 cat to get on for quite a while. I've spent a while building a good, light, bugout kit.

The stroller is a great idea. I have a wheelchair, which I thought would also be good to move heavy items. Other items grocery cart, golf bag cart would hold a duffel bag great.

Get your saved receipts, twist them up and they are perfect for wicks.

Index card boxes from dollar tree are great to help organize kits. Love dollar tree for preps

I'm fairly sure if you are hungry enough, ramen noodles will taste like fillet steak.

There's also 3 for $1 cup noodles/ramen at the dollar store. Those have freeze-dried vegetables, meats, and tvp in them.

Onenote on using cleaning bleach for water disinfection is you have to be sure that the concentration to delusion ratio is correct some inexpensive bleachis are a lower concentration and may require more drops per quart. It's also worth mentioning that over time the chlorine concentration does drop so it is something you want to rotate in-and-out of your emergency supplies.

I Would Add a Roll of Large Black Refuse Sacks & some Strong Sticky Tape. & Maybe some Large Polythene Decorators Cover Sheets to Make a Shelter from the wind & rain. or to cover a broken window / hole in your roof etc. Or to cover windows in extreme cold to stop Drafts. Black Refuse sacks will keep things Dry in Heavy Rain & Good for Storing Items & Transporting Items During your Emergency.

Mom always taught me to read the fine print. Note: Scented bleach will sanitize, but not disinfect. Thus, it is worthless for water purification. Get the real thing, unscented, to add drops to water to purify.

I'm with you up to the batteries. I worked at a dollar store, and I promise you,a one dollar battery gives you exactly one dollar worth of power. Not something I'd want to rely on in an emergency.

I actually went there today and got a lot of things for a bug out bag. They had so many of the things on my list. I also bought lots of items for my pantry. I made a good haul for a very reasonable amount of money.

i only had $20 for a month for food once when I was $20....I went a whole 4 weeks eating nothing but toast, ramen, and beans and rice with hot sauce (the HS i got for free at gas stations or taco bell) with a protein shake every other day (i had about a lb left over from the month before) it was not that bad at all

I love this comment! Finally someone with common sense! This idea that you only prep what your family likes, is ridiculous that is for your everyday pantry. For survival the most calories at the cheapest price to last more days without food! Exactly the truth, go two days and that food will be fine, trust me. AND start now to do what is, and was, your responsibility to yourself and children from the beginning. Teach them to eat a varied diet of everything. It is vital to their health and well being. And your increased amount of food, plus better health from learning to eat what is good for you and by variation usually more healthful, will mean a better chance of survival by being healthier and more able to find food.
