Yes the Association is one of my all time favorite groups. Along Comes Mary brings back memories of happier times Summer of 1966, graduation from high school, last really free summer. It was an anti drug song, ahead of its time. I love to sing along, but you gotta sing fast. Another song of theirs I like is a unique song called "Requiem For the Masses. " About a soldier in Vietnam, poor sucker catches a bullet and wanders off into the jungle to die. Tells of the thoughts going thru his head as he lay there expiring. A very scathing anti-war song.

The Four Season version has a slightly slower tempo with a softer group harmony voice tone whereas the Tremeloes sound stronger in voice tone and more emotional with a quicker tempo.. The Tremeloes version is what takes me back to a summer of my early bitter-sweet teen years of the sixties.

I was watching a beachboys documentary a few years back and it went in depth on how the harmonies of the Lettermen were perhaps the greatest influence on young Brian Wilson as he would play the Letterman albums for days at a time and spoke of this in an interview. Naturally I then had to begin listening to them and wow, it's amazing. It's almost like Brian is doing the arrangements for them. Glad I saw that documentary and have added the Lettermen on my "harmony-centric" playlist along with the Beachboys, CSNY, 3 Dog Night, Queen. ABBA, Bee Gees, Momma's & Poppa's, Cowsills, E.W and Fire, The Association, Peter-Paul& Mary, Certain Beatle songs with lush vocal arrangements, Manhattan Transfer, and a good grouping of individual songs that have harmonic magic.

Being able to sing is not require and if you spit and slobber like a brainless monkey then you can do rap, too. I suspect that the industry forgot to put the C in front of rap because the people running it aren't intelligent enough to spell it correctly. It's all no talent noise now.

Your choices reflect your particular taste in music. From the same time era and a little before, others might pick the doo wop singers who sang the most complex 4 part harmonies with soul from NYC East Coast, Chicago, Detroit, LA, (even Texas) like the .Drifters, Coasters, Flamingos, Moonglows, Dells, Jarmels, Platters, Diablos, Channels, Belmonts etc....Gave me the chills.

The Beach Boys are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of popular music, especially for their use of complex and distinctive vocal harmonies. However, the origins of their harmonic style can be traced back to an earlier vocal trio, The Lettermen, who were a major inspiration for the young Brian Wilson, the creative leader of the Beach Boys. According to a documentary I watched a few years ago, Wilson was fascinated by the close-harmony pop songs of The Lettermen, and he would listen to their albums for hours on end, studying their arrangements and techniques. This prompted me to explore the music of The Lettermen myself, and I was amazed by their beautiful and smooth blend of voices. It seemed as if Wilson had learned from them how to craft his own intricate and expressive harmonies for the Beach Boys. I was glad that I watched that documentary, as it led me to discover and appreciate The Lettermen, who are now part of my “harmony-centric” playlist. This playlist features other groups and artists who are known for their harmonic magic, such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Three Dog Night, Queen, ABBA, Bee Gees, The Mamas & the Papas, The Cowsills, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Association, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Beatles, Manhattan Transfer, and various individual songs that showcase the power and beauty of vocal harmony.

The Moody Blues had some of the most lush harmonies of the late 60's and early 70's. Hypnotic and tight, and like most prog rock, best experienced while "under the influence." And although they were more of a jazz quartet, The Manhattan Transfer had some of the tightest and most intricate harmonies in all of music. Two of their biggest crossover hits are great examples of this: "The Boy From New York City," and "Soul Food to Go" (which also had an amazing music video featuring stop frame animation in the style of the old award-winning California Raisins commercials).

I wouldn’t let him. One day, he was in great pain, and had two forms of stage four cancer. Three weeks later… I was scrolling through music, and came across The Byrds, Turn,Turn,Turn. They didn’t have the song, but the funeral director did better. He read the verses directly from the Book of Ecclesiastes. We all miss you, Tony.

My own 2¢ - Almost anything by The Seekers, maybe choose _I'll Never Find Another You,_ lead vocal by the late Judith Durham; wr. by Tom Springfield; _You Were On My Mind,_ by We Five; lead vocal by Beverly Bivens; written by Sylvia Fricker of Ian (Tyson) & Sylvia. Many songs by The Roches, 3 sisters with fantastic vocal harmonies; _Losing True_ (their own composition) or the _Hallelujah Chorus_ by G. F. Handel (from The Messiah) If you can find a better 3-voice, _a capella_ version of that work, I'd like to hear it!! All these (& more!) are highly recommended. Have a listen! Fred

At one point a group I was in tried to master the harmony on Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and never quite made it (CSN) - maybe Helpless for CSNY? Then there was Carry On - so many.......

I personally, for the harmonic balance put " California Dreamin" at the top of the list. The singers loft the tune into the air and its just "picked up" by the others, who "answer" the sound by adding to it, rather than all singing the same notes, demonstrating a " group vocality". They "echo" each other! Thats why i think it should be top of the list

While I agree with all of these picks, I feel that En Vogue (pretty much anything) should have also been mentioned. Their harmonizing was amazing.

My father loved Country, my mother loved folk & 50/60s pop. Forever grateful that music was almost always playing in the home and that we were each encouraged to find our own favourite music.

Phil Spector was a genius with his wall of music. I was just a kid, but every single one of his songs just blew my mind. I loved his harmonies. I loved everything about them. And, the Beach Boy harmonies were so much better than the Beetles. While other teens were going crazy for them, I was sticking with The Beaxh Boys! ABBA came much later, but they were great, too! And the BeeGees! So many more!

“Turn, turn, turn” was Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, from one of the “wisdom books” of the Old Testament, collections of truths and sayings. The words attributed “a season” to a series of opposing actions: “A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap; a time to kill, a time to heal,” etc.

What? No "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips or "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes" by CSNY? You missed several harmonic gems in making this list I'm afraid.
