    EmptyMan000 it’s the way it was portrayed in the show. The performance of everyone in that scene (not only queen Mary, but when the queen mother acknowledges Philip’s now higher hierarchy) is simply amazing. Besides it is said that the real queen Mary was a stickler for protocol. She made Elizabeth curtsy even in private, when king George VI didn’t. So her curtsying must’ve been very daunting for young Elizabeth who’d just lost her father.

    The most shocking scene for me was after the Queen's coronation, Edward stands outside playing bag of pipes and there is deep regret in his eyes for the decision he made. In this moment you know that if given a second chance, he would choose the crown and forsake love. Watched the season twice and this scene gives me goosebumps.

    Alistair AI, It isn't played like a camaraderie joke. It has been written in to show Philip as rather crass. Excpt that he does it like a schoolboy comparing Pokemon. Philip was the commander of a naval vessel. Showing Philip suggesting that the man STOLE the Victoria Cross was really insulting to Philip, because if Philip, (or anyone else) ACTUALLY SAID THAT, then they required a punch in the mouth to put them in their place. No-one has a Victoria Cross unless they have risked their lives, UNDER FIRE, in order to save other people, or carry out some other such gallant action. As for commenting on the fact that an African man had exactly the three regular service medals that every single person who served in Africa had ..... It would be about as clever as commenting that someone was wearing a tie to a board meeting. It is really stupidly written.

    MandyJMaddison are you related to them to know what is and what isn’t true? It’s a tv show of course certain details and characterizations are going to be exaggerated for drama purposes. I don’t see his portrayal as you see it. I think he was supported of her but of course frustrated at the same time. I don’t know if you are aware that The Queen herself is a fan of the show.

  • @MandyJMaddison

    @MandyJMaddison

    6 жыл бұрын

    viggolover1, Firstly, a friend of Matt Smith's who was in the film industry, was at dinner with Prince Philip and asked him if they watch the Crown, to which Philip glowered at him and said "Don't. Be. Ridiculous!" NO military person from a Commonwealth country would say "I have a medal like that, and like that, and like that" when they were looking at the two medals awarded to EVERY Commonwealth serviceman and woman, and the third medal indicating that an African had served in AFRICA. And as for saying that he must have STOLEN the Victoria Cross. That would be a truly appalling insult to a man who had been awarded the highest possible award for heroism. You don't NEED to be related to Philip to know that a Naval Commander would not suggest that a HERO had stolen his award. NOTHING that he could say to the man would be more insulting. While Philip ha been known to make some rather inappropriate comments at times, military men do not go around insulting people who wear Victoria Crosses. Don't you comprehend the point that I am making? Philip had just served through the War himself. And the scene of Philip looking RESENTFUL at the most difficult moment of her life is really HATEFUL. What right have they to imagine that Philip would chose THAT particular moment to act in a truly cruel, selfish and despicable manner? OK. I just found and watched the footage of the actual coronation. You can't see Philip's face when he kneels in front of her, because there is the back of a robed person in the way. But what you CAN see is that after paying his homage, he stands, bends over, and tenderly kisses her cheek. It is a beautiful moment, a truly human and intimate moment in what must have been an otherwise overwhelming ceremony. Philip then went back to the palace and intimidated Cecil Beaton, the official photographer. (according to Cecil Beaton) Let me point out AGAIN, that they have made this FICTION concerning two people who are very much alive, but one of whome is frail and ailing, and the other of whom must be in the distressing situation of knowing she will almost certainly soon have to manage without her partner of seventy years. I find it extremely cruel that the producers f this stuff are creating fantasies about their sex life, infidelities and inventing truly stupi utterances. If Philip becomes sufficiently angered about this, it might shorten his life. Why the F*CK cannot they just make a good series about Diana' sex life? Or are we afraid of offending a couple of handsome young princes?

    MandyJMaddison how do you even know if it’s true or not...I’m talking about the friend thing. Anyway like I said before is a series normally they do distorted some of the truth for drama effect. But production, acting, editing and even the scenery is of one of the best quality I have seen on tv. Anyway I don’t thing Queen Elizabeth or Prince Philip are loosing any sleep over it. Like I said The Queen said when asked that she likes it. If this is true or not only she knows.

Nobody knows what is said in private between the Queen and her husband, her children, her sister, her PM... the Duke of Windsor’s actual letters can’t be quoted because nobody can figure out who owns the copyright... and things are depicted out of order ie in season 2 , when Kennedy was assassinated Elizabeth was very pregnant with Edward, but in the show she doesn’t even find out she’s pregnant until 2 episodes later.

    It isn't underrated. It is absolute crap! They do not know even the first thing about getting it right. I have written this before. I will do it again for YOUR benefit. Prince Philip was born a Prince. But hsi Uncle the King was put off the throne of Greece, the family fled and Philip's mother became a nun. Philip went to England and lived with relative. He went to a very tough school in Scotland where he would have been whipped by the masters or beaten up by the boys if he acted like a smart-arse. Then at 15 he went in the Navy and served through World War II. In 1952 he was Commander of HMS Magpie. . He met Elizabeth several times and she wrote to him while he was on duty. NOW, this is IMPORTANT. He was a Naval Officer. He was used to TAKING COMMAND. When he married Elizabeth, he did not go to foreign countries and act like a stupid smarty-face undergraduate university student whose only experience of life is cheeking professors and chatting up girls in the library. He was a young man who had been travelled the world, who had been into battle, who had seen men die and who had led thers into dangerous actions. He was a young man who UNDERSTOOD the order of RANK. He knew what it was like for a PRINCE to be a midshipman and scrub the decks. He also knew how a captain behaves towards an Admiral of the Fleet. In other words, when Philip married Elizabeth, their was NO QUESTION as to whether he would boy his knee, and offer his allegiance. 1. SO when this stupid series shows Philip kneeling and looking cruelly resentful, AT HER MOMENT OF NEEDING HIM then this is too stupid and too inaccurate to be taken as even possible. Do you REALLY think that a person who loved her so much would be thinking of himself, or would he be looking at his beloved wife and wondering how he could possibly ease the huge burden of responsibility that landed on her little head with that 4 pound weight of crown? 2. He is a military man. So he goes up to an elderly Kenyan dignitory, looks at his medals and says: "Good God! I've got one of those, and one of those, and one of those!" Then he looks at the fourth one, a cross and says "Good grief! Where did you steal that?" And this is the point at which he resembles a really smart-faced undergraduate (freshman). Soooo clever and full of himself, and yet totally ignorant. GET THIS, the research and wardrobe department have looked into what medals Philip would ACTUALLY be wearing, and they have got his ten medals, and his honours exactly right (someone has done their homework) BUT the incredibly stupid scriptwriter has got it wrong, the director has got it wrong, and the actor looks like a total smug ****hole. WHY? 1. the first medal is the World War II Service Medal. It indicates the man served in WWII. Would Philip REALLY say "God God, I've got one of those!" EVERY person who served has one of those. 2. The second one is the Africa Medal. EVERYONE who served in Africa has one of those. (including Philip) Would he REALLY say "Ive got one of THOSE!" like a child comparing Pokemon? 3. The third was, I think, for those who served under Georg VI. (including Philip) "WOW, I've got one of those too!" Have you ever heard anything so stupid? NOW, if Philip looked at this African man's chest and saw that he had served in the North Atlantic, or the South Pacific, he might be a little surprised. (Understand that he would recognise the medals immediately, as easy as you recognise a Coka Cola sign) But there is nothing surprising in the service medals. 4. The last one is a different matter entirely. Philip, Princess Elizabeth, their detectives, their security, and every single military person standing ANYWHERE NEAR that man would have noticed that maroon ribbon, and dark bronze cross sticking out from under the string of beads. EVERY military person would have noticed it, even though it was partly hidden. It would have been more obvious to them than a blazing diamond in the sunset. That piece of dull metal is the Victoria Cross. It is the highest award for bravery that you can receive, anywhere in the world. It outstrips all US and other awards. It is made of gun metal, and inscribed "FOR VALOUR". Prince Philip, and all the others, would have seen it, and looked at it in silence, because that is what you do, when you are confronted by a true hero. The idea that Philip, a Prince, would make a joke about the man having stolen his VC is not just farcical, it is seriously insulting to Prince Philip. For anyone to write this sort of stuff without giving serious consideration as to how a high-ranking naval officer might act, is ridiculous.

    The show is NOT "absolutely amazing"! It is a deceitful fiction that seriously misrepresents the character of Prince Philip, in particular. We are detailing with a man who was born a prince, had a very strong and disciplined upbringing, and who very quickly made a place in the world for himself as husband of the Heir Apparent. This show depicts him looking childish, demanding, point-scoring, petulant, and unsupportive at the very significant historic moment when his wife needs him most. It is a lie.

    Ricki-Sue King, It is a bit of a misunderstanding. It is generally claimed that HenryVIII divorced two of his wives Catherine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves. Technically, he did not "divorce" either of them. Anne of Cleves is the easiest so I'll deal with it first. Anne was a Flemish Princess who had land and money. She looked like a suitable wife for Henry, from a political point of view. Henry sent for a portrit, and when the picture came back, he thought that she was quite pretty, and decided to marry her. When she arrived, he said that he had been duped and that she looked like a Belgian Mare. But Anne was a princess, and she was not going away quietly. Their was already an official contract of betrothal (engagement). So Anne got a very large settleent of money and land from Henry. They appear to have remained on fairly friendly terms. But because they never married, and never consummated the marriage. they were not actually divorced. The matter of Catherine was more complex. Henry was not the Prince of Wales i.e. the heir to the British Throne. He had an older brother, Arthur. Arthur was betrothed to the best possible match, Princess Catherine of Aragon (part of Spain). She came over from Spain to marry him. But before the wedding took place, Prince Arthur died. The contracts were all written up, but no actual wedding had happened. So in this sort of situation, there is a very good princess going to waste, with all her political connections, which are very valuable. So after a suitable period f Mourning, Prince Henry had to marry her instead. Then on the death of his father, he bacame king, and Catherine his queen. She was about ten years older than Henry, who was eighteen when they married. At that date, England was unified under a single king (earlier than other larger European countries). England had never been entirely ruled by QUEEN, so when Henry and Catherine's first child turned out to be a daughter, it was a big disappointment. Mary had other children, but they were stillbrn, and she never produced the prince that was needed for the heir to the throne. It seemed impossible that the country could be ruled by a woman. As Catherine was getting older, Henry started to cast his eye around in other directions. There was another very important factor at this time. The Roman Catholic Church had become extremely corrupt. They indulged in wars up and down Italy. Rich families bribed to have their son made Pope. Children as young as ten were made bishops. The huge monasteries all over Western Europe, collected taxes for the Pope. And worse still, "Indulgences" were sold to raise money. People were persuaded that they could buy an indulgence that would get themselves or someone they loved out of the suffering that occurred after death. The Church also had people believing that no personal relationship with God was possible, you HAD TO BELONG to the church, in order to be saved. Anyone who spoke against these things was considered a heretic. People were not allowed to own a Bible in their own languages- you had to go to Church and hear it read in Latin, and explained by a priest. All over Europe, people were charged with heresy and executed by burning. Consequently, the majority of Bishops in England wanted to split with the Pope, and the Church of Rome. One of Henry's best reasons was that he could then grab all the land, the wealth, and the taxes associated with the monasteries. Meanwhile Henry had fallen in love with pretty, charming Anne Bolyen who had just come to the English court from a stay in France. Henry then made a claim which might have been true, but was probably false. He claimed than when he had married Catherine of Aragon all those years earlier, she was not a virgin. He SAID that she had had intercourse with his brother, which meant, technically, she was his brother's wife. It is the law of the Church that you cannot marry your brother's wife, THEREFORE they were not really married at all. Henry asked to Pope to annul the marriage (annul means to say it never really existed.) The Pope took a quick look at the King of Spain and said... "NO I cannot do that!" So the Bishops of England went back to Henry and made an agreement. If Henry split the Church of England from the Church of Rome, then the Church of England would annul his marriage. When you read that Henry split the Church JUST TO GET A DIVORCE, it is really not true. Henry had a number of reasons. But whether the split had happened at that time, or a little later in history, it would have appened without doubt, because of the corruption in the Catholic Church.

    MandyJMaddison sorry, but Catherine was DEFINITELY married to Arthur, for about 6 months, before he died. She claimed after he died that they never consummated the wedding because he was sickly, and Henry claimed they did. The Pope was under the control of the Holy Roman Emperor, who also happened to be Catherine’s nephew, through her sister, and he refused to grant a divorce on those grounds. Henry eventually became so fed up with it that he said he was the Head if the Church in England, and he’d divorce whomever he liked. Catherine had already been banished from Court, and she was left broken and almost alone, until she died a few years later. The reason they didn’t allow the Royal family to divorce back then was mostly because of Victoria, and the rigid moral code everyone lived by during those times.

In the series, king george was watching his daughter on TV on the tour that he was supposed to go but couldnt because of his previous operation. And his last night was spent with family. I think he wanted to see what her majesty would look like as a sovereign before he departs, which he did see and I think he died happy knowing his daughter can make it as a monarch.
