What do children with Aspergers do when they become adults??? My son is 20 and was diagnosed when he was 3 years old. He received services and assistance all through school but now...he's lost. He hates the label and insists on living his life with out any help or anyone knowing that he has it...eventually girlfriends, friends and employers end up getting frustrated with him and it's a never ending cycle. He has recently taken to smoking Marijuana and said he has finally found something that makes him feel comfortable in his own skin. He doesn't have Anxiety, people find him funny, he can engage in a group without thinking about how to act...he just engages and is accepted (according to him). As his mother I do not understand this...this is not what most mothers wish for their child but I can't even fight him because I don't know what else to offer...I don't know of any other resources out there that are for the "high functioning". He looks "normal" and dresses "normal" and articulates excellent so right off the bat no one thinks anything is unusual...BUT most of the "groups" and resources tend to include peers who are more severe than he is and he ends up running for the door (figuratively) because he doesn't see himself in these other individuals...so he becomes very "anti-Asperger" or "Autism" What can I do?????

what is the advantage of getting a diagnosis if you already know you have it? My son was told by a dozen doctors, psychiatrists, and university professors he is definitely aspergers. so why should he seek a formal (expensive, time consuming) diagnosis?

+Aspergers versus Neurotypicals Depending on where in the world you are, certain countries offer a larger range of support services if a formal diagnosis has been made. Ultimately you would be best to weigh the pros and cons involved in your particular circumstance.
