The shutter + film advance sound of the Olympus AF-1 takes me right back to my childhood as it was my mom’s camera she took everywhere until we got our first digital camera in ‘98. It’s still in a drawer at her house I should borrow it from her

Funny little dispute about the Olympus XA4macro! I have had such a camera and was very satisfied. Tiny, light and solid. The optics were not quite up to par with 28mm for my SLRs back then, but decent stuff! Underrated and certainly worthy of inclusion in a review of P&S cameras because zonefocus was easy on that one.

Remembering 17 years ago, I bought an Olympus XA camera on eBay. Unused in a box for about $ 175, but then the dollar currency was low. I sold it sometime after for about $ 250. In today's money, it might be as much as $ 400. At the same time, I bought a dark Contax T3 for about $ 260 and sold it a week later for $ 400. I should kept it.

Had very good time watching U guys, great work, great info and point of view, im'm a user of Olympus MJU-2 , love it for how small it is but i\m considering a small change, Ricoh GR1 looks really good, especially with exposure compensation(missing this feature on my MJU-2 - any other cameras with expososure compensation worth checking besides Contax T2? + chosing self the F-stop ? or is it too much for point and shoot? cheers!

  • @Kamerastore

    @Kamerastore

While you might not get full exposure compensation, many compacts have a backlight compensation button that gives +1.5 or +2 stops of exposure. Only higher-end models like the T2 or Minilux will give you full control. The Nikon 35Ti is a slightly less expensive model with that option. Thanks for watching! - Connor

You're right about orange. You should think about doing a similar video about point and shoots that don't have the pop out lens as this is one of the most common reasons to turn the camera into a small brick. Nikon 35Ti.

I would've added mention of Olympus AF-1 mini infinity. It has same lens as MJU, weather proofing, flash controls, clamshell, takes AA batteries etc. It is awesome p&s. Only serious problem is that the battery door is very weak and it is difficult to find one that has intact one.

I have a Yashica T4 super Weatherproof that I bought new in 2000 for a couple of hundred dollars. It is styled and looks like the T5 you showed with the waist level super scope. Mine is black and it has traveled with me to many countries. The images it creates are outstanding. Especially portraits with the flash fill. I can’t believe that camera is worth more today than when I bought it.

It's true, camera prices have jumped a lot in the past 20 years! 2000-2010 was probably the low point for film camera prices as digital cameras became commercially viable. We're just now starting to reach a point where some cameras sell for more than they were new, which is a bit crazy. Most film cameras still sell for a small fraction of what they were when they released! Thanks for watching. - Connor

Would have been interesting to see the Konica Hexar AF as recommendation for the most high end cameras since is still relatively cheap in comparison to a contax. Many don't consider it a P&S since it resembles a rangefinder :)! Anyway great job guys! 👏

It's true, the Konica is a good alternative for many of the high-end cameras on the list, like the T2 or Minilux. I think our hesitance to put it in the video is actually a compliment to the Hexar, as it's more similar to the Contax G2 or more substantial rangefinder cameras than the point & shoots mentioned here in our opinion. It's definitely more of a point & shoot than the G2, but the lines are blurred for sure. Thanks for watching! - Connor

ricoh gr1 is very expensive right now, but I noticed there are tons of other ricoh point-and-shoot models (maybe slightly bigger and older) that don't get the hype and I believe they have similar specs to the gr1, are there any reasons why not to get those other models? although I want it, It's very difficult for me to justify these inflated hyped prices where you can get any film dslr for basically dirt cheap to free with image quality miles ahead of any point-and-shoot(s).

  • @jolyonstone4942

My point and shoot camera is a Nikon RF2 which I saved from the tip during a flat clearance. It works fine but has the weakness of a late 80's p&s, it's all automatic. The features I don't like are absence of control over film speed (DX coding only, which also excludes quite a few modern films that aren't coded and a lot of out of date film where you might want to change the settings) and no way of switching the flash off. On the other hand the autofocus seems to work fine and is totally unobtrusive and quick (apparently it's based on a fairly simple zone system but in practice it just works!). Would I like something more sophisticated? Yes, but not too complicated. Would I be prepared to pay a lot more than this one cost (0€)? Not a chance!

Because.. - My P&S is the Fuji Cardia Mini (love it) - I bought my sister a Lexio 70 (absolutely mint in box for $30 I might add) for Christmas this year - I bought one brother a Yashica T2 (he's always talks about the yashica and contax T series) - I bought another brother the Canon MC-1 (didn't work and he needs a flash so I'm going with a Konica A4, but I thought about Olympus Infinity AF-1) - I bought the last brother a Minox 35 GT (leica user, so I wanted small form factor, but if that wasn't the case then Nikon L35AF) All in all I think our views align on good point and shoots! Have used the Lexio 70 for a number of years - it has os many great features and I like the design. supposed to be fragile - mine held up very well but I have bought another that just never worked. Having 28mm on a point and shoot zoom is great. and by the way the "w" is for wide - but the lens is the same so maybe they just wanted to underline the fact that its 28mm?!

I like my Contax T2, but it does have it's quirks. It isn't great at close focusing and close focus distance is 0.7 m. It also reads ISO from DX coding and only DX coding, so you'd better not be shooting bulk rolled ISO 800 films in ISO 100 canisters.

Disposable cameras made the list but no instant film cameras? Interesting. It would cost me $70 to buy two Fuji disposable cameras and get digital scans of the 54 shots, $90 if I want standard prints included. However, I can get 50 shots of Instax Mini or 40 shots of Instax Square for $40 and use my scanner for digital files. I can even get 100 shots of Instax Wide film for less than 54 scans and prints from two disposable cameras. As an added bonus, Im shooting medium format film rather than 35mm. No idea why instant FILM rarely gets included in this type of stuff. Give me instant film all day!

Video @ 27:53 "#4 Yashica T4" - Not emphasized in this 'talk', AND better than all of the f3.5 Zeiss lens "T" units, with its almost ONE FULL stop faster f/2.8 ASPH Carl Zeiss lens - Video @ 15:48 - the Yashica T3- PLUS, the T3 doesn't have the problematic lens movement issues of so many 'tuck-in' lens P&S's (i.e. the T4, Leica Minilux, Contax T2, Nikon 35Ti etc.). Finally, the best advanced amateur P&S that has every advantage of the Yashica T3, PLUS, the option for manual focusing, 'hard-button' manual Flash (it's always off unless you turn it on) and when rewinding the film, it leaves the film tip OUT - This would be the quickly mentioned but GREAT NIKON L35AW (aka Nikon Action Touch)

mju is not spanish, it's greek. Anyway extremely interesting presentation. When I was a kid i used to read photo magazine to check the Nikon, Contax ans Leica cameras (not Canon!, however I was impressed when EOS-1 was introduced). I couldn't afford any of these at that time. Now it's not a problem, I have 3 Nikons and number of lenses incl. Nikkor 12-24/4 G which is is my preferred and Nikkor AF 24-120/3.5-5.6D which is my second preferred. And one analog F4S which I was recently using and Contax (T), but (unfortunately) mostly shooting with Samsung with the obligatory post-edition using gimp since I cannot use filters. From these point ans shoot u presented i would say at the beginning, that Contax T in a number one. Disposable cameras are crap, i guess mostly Americans use them (no comments) and it's not the best recommendation at all. You said Contax T cameras are loved and hated. Who the hell hates them? I would assume Americans, why? (these are not the most bright ones, so no comments). Great work, thanks.

Mine just stopped working one day and I just threw it out (around eight years ago, so it's long gone), but I still miss it despite trying to find other P&S film cameras to replace it, including the Nikon L35AF. If you don't insist on autofocus I'd highly recommend the Olympus XA or one of the Yashica Electro series cameras. The Canonet QL17 Giii is also really nice if you can find a good copy.

It's true! Point-and-shoot cameras are always a gamble, as are any electronic devices made 20, 30, or 40 years ago. But it's a bit more complicated than that, and the industry has evolved a lot in those 10 years, too! Prices of the 2000s and 2010s (for film and cameras) were the signs of a dying industry. It wasn't sustainable like that. Prices weren't high enough for Kodak, Ilford, etc to stay in business or for camera stores to survive without diversifying a whole lot. Many didn't survive at all. The prices today signify a healthier market in general where film manufacturers can actively reinvest in production and film-specialty stores can exist. The popularity of some of these cameras has even led to the growth of a repair industry for them, with some people even manufacturing new parts for common issues. So it's perhaps a bit safer now than it was 5 years ago to buy something like a Leica Minilux. The growth of the film photography industry is super interesting! Thanks for watching. (-: - Connor

Yall need to find yourselves a Leica C1 v2. Its a beautiful point and shoot, takes incredibly sharp photos, and basically never leaves my bag

Who in their right mind would spend hundreds of Dollars on an Olympus mju II? It is a nice liitle camera, but it just isn't worth that much money! I have two of these - one that I got for about 30 EUR maybe and another one that someone gave me fro free to keep in my car in case I have an accident. Yashica T3 for _how much_? You guys are crazy! Got two that I've used in a stereo photography set. Paid about 25 EUR for them both and that's pretty much what they are worth. Madness... On the other hand, really phantastic cameras as the Fuji GS645S haven't gained in worth in over a decade...

close focus on big mini is just insane and VERY VERY useful for portraits. i cant get rid of this camera, and it dropped on floor once, actually thought it was over, but the camera was still working fine even if the electronics came out (lol). Be careful they are fragile. Got my best pictures ever with this 100$ camera, useless to go for a T2 or yashica T4.

It's true! We do our best to shift people away from disposables to reusable cameras, but the simplicity of the disposable can't be understated. There's a reason they're so popular, as you can see from the list! Thanks for watching. - Connor

Hey, guys: Nico is right, Connor is wrong: The Olympus xa4 is a great camera and fun to use. Literally a fast point & shoot. XA is fine and has advantages on paper, but the use of the rangefinder is a pain in the neck (i own both of them)

contax t2 and t3 are the worst quality cameras ever! It breaks and breaks and breaks.... later production, celebration ones, in a wood box got fixed spool thing but not other problems. But lenses are superb, no question there...
