Top 10 Original Smash Moves That Became Canon

Ойындар

Super Smash Bros. has always been a crossover fighter, from Smash 64 to Smash Ultimate, which means that moves are usually coming from their home series into Smash. Link's Spin Attack, Kirby's Inhale, Sora's Sonic Blade, the bases are all covered. Because of just how huge and influential a series Smash is, though, every once in a while the opposite manages to happen...a move is invented for Smash first, and THEN it makes its way back to its home series. Let's look at some moments where this happened!

Thanks for watching everyone, and let me know what you thought of the list! There are at least a few more candidates/possible candidates I had to exclude, if any of them definitely deserved to be here make sure to make your case, maybe there can be a follow up at some point! Also need to make a small correction: I had a comment point out that Bowser does something reminiscent of the Whirling Fortress in "Mario's Time Machine," a third-party educational game of all things for the NES. It's not quite the same thing, but if I'd known about it while making this video (the game is so obscure it doesn't even appear in most lists of Bowser appearances) I'd certainly have mentioned it. *Main channel:* kzread.info *Twitter:* twitter.com/MrMockRock *Patreon:* www.patreon.com/mockrock *Twitch:* www.twitch.tv/mockrocktwitch *Teespring:* teespring.com/stores/mockrock *TimeBolt affiliate link* (excellent software I use to speed up editing on my videos, use code "MOCKROCK" for a discount): mockrock--timebolt.thrivecart.com/order-page/

There's also the technicality that Green Missile had been used once before Smash Bros. though not in a game. During an episode (It was The Adventure of Sherlock Mario) of the Super Mario Bros. Kind Dedede never really threw around gordos until brawl, and never hit them with his hammer until smash 4, but star allies has him use an attack where he does, and since then, it's been a pretty iconic attack for him Meta knight's brawl/smash 4 final smash was original to smash, but planet robobot has him use it in meta knightmare returns King dedede even sits in his iconic crouching position from smash after you beat forgotten land even though modern kirby isn't made by sakurai anymore, they still love to reference smash... On this topic, there is something interesting about Roy's sword in regards to smash vs his own game. In his original game, the binding blade does use fire as a ranged attack, but if you do any fire emblem romhacking you will discover something interesting: the fire may have originally been a placeholder animation. If you use romhacking tools to add a ranged attack to a sword, it defaults to the animation for the fire spell. The binding blade's lore describes it as more attuned to light magic. The theory is that since smash released before The Binding Blade and established the fire connection, the devs decided to just keep the original placeholder animation and just add a few more fire animations to the sword. Unconfirmed but still interesting

  • @DSaC_

I'm not an expert on romhacking, but I'm gonna assume it has more to do with Magic Swords and data storage. I assume that, due to a lack of instruction on *what* Spell animation should be used, it ends up loading the first one listed in the code, which would be the basic Fire spell.

While using the grappling hook on opponents in Smash brings them to you, using it in Royal actually brings you to enemies for an easier ambush. I forget the specifics, but one of the arena's waiting room quotes from Commentator Waddle Dee says something along the lines of: "Our hero is a veteran to battle, folks. Original Smash moves that stand out to me are Mario and Dr. Mario's forward smashes, which are bursts of flames and electricity from their hands, respectively. I often hear people wanting to give Luigi his Thunderhand ability from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as a new Neutral Special. However, Superstar Saga came after Melee, where Mario first got his fiery forward smash and Dr. Mario debuted in Smash with his electric forward smash. This makes Thunderhand and Firebrand more likely references to Melee, so technically Thunderhand belongs to Dr. Mario.

I'm not so sure about Metroid getting the paralyzer straight from smash. In Zero Mission you technically still have to charge your paralyzer, otherwise it won't paralyze the enemies, it's just that you don't have to keep the button pressed for it to be charged. I think the plasma shot from the paralyzer could be an interpretation of zero suit grapple beam which is definitely a smash original but since Metroid hasn't used that idea it wouldn't be fair to say Metroid took it from smash.

Just a note regarding Other M's canonicity: Some things in the game (mainly Adam and Ridley) directly contradict things in both previous and later Metroid titles, so given that Other M's entire existence is barely acknowledge by later games let alone any of its story or lore, especially by Mercury Steam who do seem to care about that stuff considering they unambiguously canonized Prime and gave it a definitive place in the timeline via Samus Returns, it's safe to say that Other M is not canon.

This is honestly a really cool idea! It's really neat to see you put forth original ideas like this and makes me enjoy your content a LOT! *However* one thing you probably need to know and tread carefully about is you referring to Other M as canon. This is.. honestly kind of a hot topic in the Metroid community for the reason that it retcons every other game in the series and completely wrecks the lore which is one of the main reasons why it's not popular. In fact it's kind of why people say Other M *isn't* canon and can't be since it rewrites the lore so heavily and badly. Just thought I'd provide a little insight into that.

  • @Compucles

The story may not be popular (and the dialogue certainly isn't), but it was written by Sakamoto and is considered canon by him, so that's all that matters. Besides, it *does not* retcon nor rewrite much at all, explains a few important things connecting the earlier games to "Fusion" and "Dread", and whether or not it "wrecks the lore" is a matter of opinion (one I don't share).

Cool video, glad you talked about Pit's design. Fun fact: Samus' now iconic blue visor for the Gravity Suit first appeared in Smash. You see, while there is a purple skin for Samus, it's actually the pink one that represents the Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, where the in-game sprites show the Gravity Suit to have this pinkish purple hue; however, in this game, the visor is still green. The blue visor was introduced in the series with Metroid Prime, this time also having the less pink, more purple color the suit is more known for now. Also, the Ridley dragging thing could have been inspired by his Super Metroid fight, in which he may grab Samus and take her to a wall, however he just drops her instead of dragging her. I'm almost certain he would drag you along the wall in Zero Mission (released between Melee and Brawl) if you don't attack him when he grabs you, but I couldn't find footage of it so I'm not entirely sure.

There's another metroid one, that for me, it was always a smash reference: On smash bros, the grapple beam is a very important part of samus kit, because it can be used for recovery but it's also her grab. A.k.a, it's her tool for dealing with a shielding opponent. And on metroid prime 3, they added that exact concept: the grapple lasso is a grapple beam with it's primary use being using it on enemies that are shielding themselves, like pirates or Rundas. Before prime 3, there was only one instance of grapple beam being used offfensively, which was on super metroid. There, you could shoot it at an enemy, but it would deal minimal damage, and it wouldn't attach to the enemy, and there was an easter egg that if you attached your grapple beam to electricty while Draygon grabbed you, it would also shock draygon. But none of these uses are remotely similiar to the smash bros version, with metroid prime 3's version being very similiar and being a genuine combat tool for samus. Heck, at first, you can't even use grapple beam for movement in MP3, you need an upgrade that is called grapple swing. It's a shame that people sleep on that because Prime 3 is possibly the least popular of the prime games.

New Super Mario Bros Wii probably started that first since in that game pretty much every time you fight Bowser Jr he's in the car as well. NSMBWii came out in 2009, and Smash 4 is 2014

Other things to note - Link’s Triforce Slash in Super Smash Bros Brawl seems to be implanted in his ingame moveset in Breath of the Wild as Flurry Rush except without any Triforce - Samus’ homing missiles in Super Smash Bros Melee were later incorporated into Metroid Prime - Luigi’s Green Missile has later appeared in later Mario sports titles - Jigglypuff’s Puff Up concept in SSBB has later been Implemented as a gameplay design as Dynamaxing in Sword & Shield - Pokémon Trainer’s Triple Finish in SSBB was later incorporated as a gameplay element as Triple Battles in Black & White - Diddy’s Monkey Flip in SSBB has inspired Diddy Kong's forward/backward Trick Shot in Mario Tennis Aces - Sonic’s ability to Spin Dash in the air in SSBB was later officially added to his moveset as Drop Dash since Sonic Mania - King Dedede’s Jet Hammer with the engine inside his hammer later appeared in Kirby Super Star Ultra

Diddy Kong's side trick shot isn't indpired by the Monkey Flip, it's inspired by his classic cartwheel attack

I think Marth's shield breaker can be considered to be derivative of Fire Emblem, since Marth is a rapier user and the whole thing about rapiers in Fire Emblem is that they're effective against heavily armored units and cavalry.

A more interesting and less "controversial" pick for Meta Knight would've actually been his old Final Smash, Galaxia Darkness.

To be fair, the modern Kirby games are a bunch of Smash references and Eldritch horror duct taped together, there was a lot to work with here 🤷‍♂

@@MockRockTalk Fun Fact: Wario's waft actually comes from a micro game called (He who smelt it) From Warioware Smooth moves. Meaning Wario farting is not as original as many people think. Zero suit Samus's Plasma whip is a reference the energy whip used by the Reptilicus Hunters from Metroid Prime 3.

@@SonicTheCutehog I disagree, in fact, I didn't go far enough. Modern Kirby games are literally nothing but Smash references and Eldritch horror. If you don't enjoy Super Smash Brothers, or you don't enjoy Lovecraft, you should never play a Kirby game, they have absolutely nothing else to offer to anyone.

On the same idea. Roy's entire moveset(almost). Roy came out before Roy's debut game, releasing in melee. Almost hos entire moveset could be said to later be canonized when his fire emblem debut arrived

5:08 The stereotypical "Smash Counter" was ACTUALLY put into Fire Emblem Heroes, the mobile gatcha game where you collect characters from series. In that game, you can mix/match certain skills between characters, but some characters have skills only they can use [whether it be movement, utility, or big damaging specials.] These are known in the game as "Preferred Skills" There is a limited/Legendary unit which is a reskin of Female Corrin ("L!Corrin"), who has a preferred skill as her special called Negating Fang, which is a reference to her Down-B counter she got in Smash Bros. IN FACT, in the Japanese version of FEH the special is called "Counter Surge", which is the EXACT name of the move in Smash!
