Past Lives is my favorite for this year. I had a friend who liked it but felt it was a bit slow. Unfortunately, the attention spans of many people are like those of a spider monkey on speed.

I was getting very nervous about Matt’s list when Past Lives wasn’t showing up. Thank you! Also, I’d like to thank Geoff for making me look up the meaning of a word he uses in his reviews.☺️

From 10 to 1 for me: Killers of the Flower Moon, The Beasts, May December, Oppenheimer, Monster, Past Lives, Society of the Snow, The Holdovers, Poor Things, Spiderman Across the Spiderverse. Haven’t seen The Zone of Interest or All of Us Strangers which might have the best chance of cracking the list. Great lists and video guys

Loooooved your lists! Thanks, guys. Wow, what a great year 2023 was for cinema. Just to let you know (in case that you haven't seen it yet), last night I saw Wim Wenders' 2023 film, Perfect Days, at the MoMA Film Center here in NYC. It was chosen as the last movie to close MoMA's, The Contenders, film cycle featuring a couple dozen films that are all contenders for the 2024 Academy Award nominations. Perfect Days was absolutely delightful. What a lovely, masterfully written story. What can I say, Wim Wenders; I mean... what a genius! No wonder that after competing for the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival (where it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Best Actor Award for Kōji Yakusho), Perfect Days was selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the upcoming 96th Academy Awards (it made it into the 15 finalist films in the December shortlist). Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended!

I still haven’t seen many of the films on your lists (living in Wyoming has its perks, but close proximity to small releases is not one of them), but I was struck by what was said about seeing The Zone of Interest a second time and how that might deepen one’s feelings about it. I watched Foe last night, which is a film that most critics have shit on, and I thought it was mysterious and moody and beautiful, until it became devastating and harrowing. My sleep last night was agitated because I spent much of the night dreaming about the film, and I find myself thinking more and more that it will benefit from a second viewing in ways that nothing I’ve seen in recent years has.

Wow! I skipped it just because of the reception but I will check it out now. I did enjoy the Ian Reid novel that it is based on.

@@moviehusbands I’ve never read the book, but the fact that the screenplay was co-written by Reid is a good sign for you, I should think. The movie feels like a cousin to Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go. Foe also has my favorite film score thus far from 2023 releases.

I call the movie passages the gay version of the worst person in the world, but less comparable.
