I went to early last year and I loved it, a beautiful country with many nice people and beautiful landmarks (I went to Rome and Florence). The food was delicious too, much better than the shitty Italian food here in America.

Non amo le generalizzazioni tipo "noi" o "voi", legato a nulla, ma mi fa piacere quando vengono dati questi piccoli riconoscimenti alla realtà in cui la casualità ha voluto che nascessi. Mi è dispiaciuto un pochino, perché non sono stati inseriti autori considerati minori, come Fulci o Bava che, a loro modo, hanno creato prodotti geniali, anche se poco conosciuti e non sono convinto della prima posizione, fermo restando che "Ladri di biciclette" è un film che adoro sotto tutti i punti di vista. Forse al primo posto avrei messo un film di Fellini.

posso aggiungere un parere da profana e magari fin troppo ottimista? Secondo me, al di là della componente politica ed economica che ci pesa come macigni sulla schiena, non bisognerebbe svalutarsi così, che uno sia italiano, francese, inglese o qualsiasi altra cosa... Il cinema buono c'è anche oggi, ma la massa non se ne accorge! Siamo un popolo che ha arte, storia, non ci manca niente, soldi a parte! E la fuga di cervelli esiste da sempre, prendete Colombo e Da Vinci! Quindi, politici avari di merda e buffoni che evitano il fisco, apriamo un po' gli occhi su quello che davvero sappiamo fare, perché sappiamo farlo, ma quanto siamo bravi a criticarci!

Am I the only italian here who thinks Rebecca's pronunciation of italian words was almost perfect? Anyway great list, I would have put The Last Emperor and Vincere at least in the honorable mentions but just because Bertolucci and Bellocchio are two of my favourite film makers of all times

Tom Waits Of course not. Leone far surpassed any American director of Westerns. They certainly can be thanked for the initial spark, but no way did the Italians strived to follow the American film makers. Typical Western from before Leone: Only good and bad exists. All cowboys are clean shaven and they put their shirt inside their pants. John Wayne and his silly lines..blah blah. Same old crap.

Tom Waits Most famous/important western are The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. At least those two are the ones people know the most thanks to Sergio Leone and, in no small part, to Clint Eastwood.

You're talking about John Wayne like he's a director, probably you don't know who John Ford was, or you know him but you don't actually care about directing and making of films, you're maybe just focusing on how good the charecters look like and how badass they are. Anyway before i got into the old American western i wasn't expecting them to be even close to Leone's ones, then i was really surbrised when I watched John Ford's My Darling Climitine (1946) couple of weeks later I've seen another movie of his"The Searchers", and it was a great expierience and one of the best movies I've ever seen, it was perfectly made. Somehow i felt that both of the movies had the same tune that Leone had in his movies, especially the cinematography, and the fact is Sergio Leone was influenced by John Ford, in another word he was a pupil of him, of course he wasn't copying what Ford did literally, Leone sees the history of the West as really the reign of violence by violence while Ford had his characters and protagonists always looking forward to a rosy, fruitful future. Bottom line is that even though Leone surpassed lots of American directors, he wouldn't exist if they're was no John Ford.

A few days ago i saw "Once upon a time in the West" by Sergio Leone. With Ennio Morriconi's beautiful soundtrack. What a great movie. Isn't it Italian? Should be on the list.

I never cry during films. Except everytime I rewatch Cinema Paradiso. What a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful movie.

Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" (The Leopard) should have at least gotten an Honorable Mention.

I completely agree. Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) is my all-time favorite movie. Burt Lancaster gives one of his best performances as a 19th Century Italian aristocrat adapting to a world that is changing around him. Alain Delon, Claudia Cardinale and the supporting cast are all superb. Luchino Viscounti weaves an elegant tapestry enhanced by one of the best musical scores ever composed for a film. This is not a film for everybody, but for those with a sense of history and an appreciation of the subtleties of quality moviemaking, it is indeed a masterpiece.

+713davidh42 yes, it is a divine masterpiece indeed. The feelings you mentioned, the location atmospheres, the actors.. I'm glad some people still understand movies' quality. As for a Sicilian like me it helps a lot to comprehend my homeland, the feeling of hope we sicilians still feel is the same from the days the movie showed. " Cambia tutto per non cambiare nulla", a social class of nobles such as the one of the cynical prince of Lampedusa, who dominated Sicily for long, is replaced by peasant-mobs who will turn to be Mafiosi. A land which today is still far to be free from the Principe cynical words. I invite you to visit the locations as the "Castello di donnafugata "and many others where the movie was shot. Beh, 'Italia è uno dei paesi al mondo con la più ampia variegatura di realtà... aspettarsele tutte in un film equivarrebbe ad aspettare un film della durata di 78 ore, tagliato e censurato, ovviamente. :P

This are some of the best movies made by Italian people, and even if the actors are for the most part american or english they are always Italian movies, and they should have been on this list too. If it wasn't for the suicidal political moves, train wreck economy and the tons, and I say TONS of corruption cases I hear about every single day, which really make a young man like me want to look for a future somewhere else, I'd be much more proud of my country. But as things are, I don't see myself staying here my whole life. I know it's not the only country with such problems, but the mindset of the average Italian makes this situation pretty much impossible to change

***** I seen "Ladri di biciclette", so i answer you; I'm italian, but i'm not sure if i can speak italian or english, so I'll say it twice XD. The good, the bad and the ugly is a masterpiece of cinema, and it have a different politic points. Ladri di biciclette is a masterpiece of the italian cinema, and i think that on some points is superior than Leone's film, but it's different way... I don't know how explain, so i'll continue in italian... Il buono il brutto e il cattivo è un capolavoro del cinema mondiale e per certi versi meritava il primo posto, perché ha in se, sotto molti punti di vista, aspetti politici interessanti (e potrei citarne alcuni, ma non lo faccio per ragioni di spazio, ma c'è veramente da scavare e trovare), ma essendo parecchio affezionato a "Ladri di biciclette", non so come pormi. Qui De Sica mostra veramente e con forza una realtà che, metaforicamente oggi, letteralmente all'epoca, era la quotidianità. Tornando al punto principale, credo che chi non è italiano preferisca inserire il film di Leone come primo, perché, sostanzialmente, non ha visto nessuno degli altri, ma rimango convinto nel dire che, fra i film proposti, Ladri di biciclette meriti più degli altri la posizione, ma per ragiodi particolari, perché probabilmente Leone è tecnicamente superiore a De Sica, ma il film di De Sica è in un periodo diverso e, soprattutto, molto più sentito, se si conosce la piccola realtà in cui va ad incastrarsi. Spero tu capisca l'italiano, perché non credo di avere il cuore per riscrivere tutto in inglese :D

***** I have seen bicycle theives( isn't it bicycle theif though?) It's a fantastic movie, but it's kind of depressing. A guys and his sons whole life depend on a bike. I can watch the gbu no matter what mood I am. Not to mention, gbu is number 8 on the imdb top 250. It's above star wars, that must prove how good of a film it is.

guieguima I'm not an expert. I haven't seen this movie. Checked it on IMDB and it seems to be a great comedy. So I'll try to find it. Only Monicelli comedy I saw was 'Big Deal on Madonna Street' and I liked it a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm more into the darker side. Fulci, Bava, and Argento type stuff. I like how their horror movies aren't mind numbing shock value, but have legit gore, scares, and some have complicated stories. Just different ideas done well. Plus the Giallo films are quite nice as well.

Other reccomended movies: La Ciociara (Federico Fellini), a great drama about female abuse Nirvana (Gabriele Salvatores), maybe the only Cyberpunk movie ever made (starring Christopher Lambert) Lo chiamavano Trinità [They called him Trinity], a spaghetti western parody so fun to see Amici miei, a comedy reccomended (you'll find it in KZread with subtitles)

I'm amazed that there was no mention of Pasolini, Visconti, or Rossellini all three were masters of cinema. They easily could've done this list and limited one film per director.

Tony Leva anche anni 40/50, nel dopoguerra c'era un grande bisogno di cinema e chi aveva talento, veniva a galla... Purtroppo in italia esiste anche il nepotismo, infatti i vanzina, i de sica etc sono figli di grandi registi e attori

secondo me il periodo migliore per la storia del cinema va dal 1972 al 1984 e colloco queste date per l'uscita del padrino 1, e l'uscita di scarface, con immezzo capolavori come Full Metal Jacket e Apocalypse Now

greatsim95 Sinceramente non sono del tutto d'accordo. A giudicare dagli ultimi anni, sebbene i film squallidi siano duri a morire, ho potuto vedere film molto molto belli. Tolta "La grande bellezza" pensa a film come "Il capitale umano", "Il giovane favoloso", o anche commedie semplici ma secondo me geniali come "Smetto quando voglio" e "Noi e la Giulia", o film che sperimentano nuovi generi come "Il ragazzo invisibile" e "Il racconto dei racconti". La sfortuna è a quanto pare sono gli stessi Italiani a preferire altri film nostrani come quelli di Ruffini o Neri Parenti. Io comunque ho ancora speranza per il nostro cinema, che non è l'unico in crisi, perché anche Hollywood di recente non se la passa meglio; l'unico vantaggio che ha è che essendo un cinema di gran lunga più internazionale e avendo dietro capitali maggiori ne risente meno. Quindi io sono fiducioso. La cosa che mi preoccupa è che, al di là dei gusti cinematografici, in Italia proprio manca una cultura del cinema. Capite che nel paese che ha saputo competere in passato testa a testa con gli Stati Uniti non può permettersi di non avere una cultura del cinema. Spero che le cose possano cambiare (frase usata in migliaia di altre occasioni) ma sinceramente non la vedo così utopica la cosa. :)

I love "life is beautiful", "yesterday, today and tomorrow", "the dreamers", "malena", "call me by your name", "perfect strangers", "cinema paradiso", "la ciociara (Two Women ) "," Marriage Italian Style ", these are just a few!

Italian Cinema is so special, it gives you something more than any other Cinema including hollywood. I don't know how to describe it but watching a film for Visconti, Antonioni , De Sica and above all Fellini really feeds your soul well and you left you with a feeling of enormous satisfaction.

It's cool when you dont need to read subtitles to understand what people are saying lol

I'm not too big of a fan of Visconti (but I recognize his importance). I would've liked to see something from Ettore Scola on the list. Perhaps Una Giornata Particolare (1977).

You should check out _Nirvana_ (1997), _I'm Not Scared_ (2003), _The Consequences Of Love_ (2004), _Il Divo_ (2008) and _Gomorra_ (2008) for some more recent stuff.

This was a pretty solid list. I would have probably added movies like "Investigation of a citizen above suspicion" by Elio Petri and "We all loved each other so much" by Ettore Scola.

sinEkill it's very unfair to limit the appreciation of a movie based purely on it's graphical content. If a list of "most fucked up movies ever made" existed it would likely include salo, serbian film, oldboy, martys, inside and they're all pretty outstanding films regardless of how messed up they are

I don't know if you count Novecento as an Italian film, this is because although the director is Italian and it was filmed mostly on Italy, there were also parts filmed in France and in Germany and also some of the main cast ( Robert de Niro, Gerard Depardieu or Donald Sutherland) is not Italian. If you do, you should've at least make it worthy of an honorable mention. Maybe, you didn't as from the original piece they did several cuts, as the former was 5 hours long whilst latter versions have been shortened to more public friendly times. Nevertheless, Novecento, I think illustrates and tells a powerful and emotional story in an excellent way. Therefore, without a hint of doubt, and humbly, being my opinion, if you counted it, it should've make it to this rank. Have a good day.

I saw "Umberto D" in a college film class back in 1985, and it broke my heart. Had to get the DVD a few years ago.

nice top10, a little too classical maybe: since 2000 there are many wonderful movies that are often underestimated from the crowd, and you forgot to add something from Visconti, Pasolini and Bava. Anyway nice job, can't wait for top10 movies from France and England :P

L'Avventura is fucking amazing but I personally prefer L'Eclisse, La Notte and Red Desert from Antonioni. Such a brilliant director.

Other recommended movies: My friends (Mario Monicelli), Accattone (Pasolini), Salò (Pasolini), Deep Red (Dario Argento), Death in Venice (Luchino Visconti). And obviously every movie by Sergio Leone :) While The Great Beauty shouldn't even be mentioned, in my opinion.

Hi Everyone, I think abroad (as in italy, sadly) people often fail to realize what gave italian art its flavour and greatness: Simplicity - some movies are so simple and yet so great and honest, and I do not see this enough in this ranking. Where are Sordi, Comencini, Monicelli, Totò? I think we are forgetting this, but it's what really made italian art and cinema so special. To all the italians here, we are innovators, it's good to learn from each other and get inspirations from american cinema but also not to throw away our singularities!

#1 would be a battle between Tokyo Story, and one of Kurosawa's movies like Ikiru, Seven Samurai, or Rashomon. I think 7 Samurai would win. I also predict Kurosawa gets a minimum of 4 of the 10 spots.
