Great list. Murmur remains one of my all-time favorites, but didn't get it until the late 80s. OK Computer is a great choice for no. 1 - also a fave. It grabbed me just a few notes into the first song, and I believe I bought more of their albums than any other band. You know, back when people used to buy albums, or rather CDs. I was thinking that NIN's Pretty Hate Machine might be on this list, but that's not really the appropriate genre, but surely that would be at the top of the influential industrial albums.

Great to see REM’s Murmur in the top 10 alternative band list along with The Smiths, Urbana, Radio Head etc. REM is a very versatile band that absorbed many musical styles but came out with its unique signature style .
I do really enjoy, and agree with some of selections on this list, but there were some glaring omissions that deserved to be on here in at least an honorable mention capacity. I'll list some of the albums that I can think of off the top of my head: Jar of Flies - Alice In Chains Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins Ten - Pearl Jam Loveless - My Bloody Valentine Live Through This - Hole Superunknown - Sound Garden Odelay - Beck (Even though Watch Mojo obviously considered it. My fave off of this list would be Disintegration by far. That is the only one that really made an impact on me. The one album that did make a serious impact and did change my mind about alt rock music/alternative was Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by The Cure. That was watershed for me.
While I would've done a top 20 and put most of them in a different order, OK Computer is my generation's Dark Side Of The Moon. It really raised the bar super high as far as what makes a timeless & truly amazing albums. I'm also happy that you guys FINALLY gave Pinkerton the recognition it's always deserved. I wouldn't say it gave way to emo. That's reserved to Sunny Day Real Estate's debut album Diary. Also, if we didn't have SDRE, we wouldn't have had the Foo Fighters. "Pretty Hate Machine" by NIN and "Suffer" by Bad Religion were two albums that quite literally changed my little pubescent life. There was an amazing radio station in Salt Lake City called KJQ that played what they called 'modern rock', and I ate it up. They were ahead of their time, for sure.
Thank you for the udpate, WatchMojo..!! When Nirvana's Nevermind came out in 1991, people actually lined up to buy the album. In my city's downtown record store alone, they sold over 1 million CDs. I used to study while listening to the album on my standard speaker equipped CD player, but later learned there was a hidden track on the 13th position that sounded like a demonic crap. I listened to that multiple times not even knowing that track was hidden on the CD. @.@
So many good albums on this list. For me, it's OK Computer and Disintegration, in that order, the later mostly when I was younger.
Yes Ok computer is number one. That one definitely is most influential cuz that's the one I personally most remember besides nevermind

Velvet Underground and Nico. Wasn’t that the album that *begat* “alternative” rock? Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie (or Siamese Dream)

Am here 4 "No Surprises"❤ Radiohead❤

These choices are personal, but this would be my list: Husker Du - Zen Arcade Replacements - Let It Be Pixies - Surfer Rosa or Doolittle Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out Weezer - Blue Album or Pinkerton Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One Stone Roses - Stone Roses Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret Radiohead - OK Computer Yes, I know that's 11
You read my mind about Nevermind but I do accept you guys really thought about this! Let me throw in Mellon Collie due to its epic scope and ability to counterbalance heavy depressing angst with elegant and gentle melodies in a conceptual package. But maybe that's for another list.
I don't think anyone was surprised with no1. Easily one of the greatest albums of all time. Tom York's voice is unreal and beautiful.
Even if we regard punk as a separate genre/subgenre, we're just going to pretend that Björk, They Might Be Giants, Ween, Garbage, Linkin Park, The Flaming Lips, Devo, The B-52s, Tom Waits, Talking Heads, Suzanne Vega, The Pet Shop Boys, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden & vintage alternative such as Frank Zappa, Residents & Todd Rundgren (yes, Rundgren, I'm not kidding) don't count/don't exist???

Loveless for sure! Thank you so much! So many bands drop MBV as a major influence, but none of them sound quite like it. Ever.
The one I listened to the most? certainly Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, because it's the one that brought me and my group of friends together! We listened to Pixies and Sonic Youth all the time! The one I listened to the most by myself, of all those, is the Cure's Disintegration. I do agree with a lot of commenters that some important albums were not mentioned, like Loveless, but overall this is a pretty solid 'list'!
Would have been nice to see the three below but it was a better list than I was expecting. Should do a follow up Pearl Jam/Ten They Might Be Giants/Flood Violent Femmes/self titled
I seriously expected Disintegration to be #1. Hit singles and total LP combined.
Nirvana, Radiohead and R.E.M. are the one I listen to
The quality of the work put out by Radiohead in the ten years, from 1997 to 2007, is some of the very best by any band ever.....they are without parallel - their music is totally unique and revolutionary.
Heard nearly all of them save for a couple ahaha. OK Computer is definitely my favorite in the group tho
Define alternative rock.
Probably could've made a top 50 and still left great albums off..I would say Violator by Depeche mode..
Glaring omissions, Smash by Offspring (best selling Indie record), Dookie by Green Day (popularized punk), Superunknown by Soundgarden (helped further popularize grunge after Nevermind).
