What were the most expensive American cars of the 1980s? We can all assume that each car on this list will either be a Lincoln, Cadillac, or maybe Buick? You will have to watch the video to find out because that's what I thought initially. There are lots of surprises packed in this video!
Had to pay tribute to the bustle back Cadillac Seville, what an iconic piece of automotive history!

The same here, I found a 1983 Buick Riviera convertible but I didn’t move fast enough. So I got a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. The cool thing is that it was built in 83

By 1985 the Cadillac Eldorado convertible was $35,000 and that was very expensive for that time.
Thanks for the video, I just love vintage cars from 60's through 80's. One car that was prominent in the mid-1980's was the Pontiac Fierro.
I was born in 97. These are my favorite type of videos because I love these cars! I grew up around late 70s to early 90s cars so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. Grandfather had an 88 Ford Festiva, a 76 Chevy Custom 10, a 92 Mercury Grand Marquis, and mom had a 97 Ford Escort in purple.
That GNX is one of a kind , for a collector 350k is nothing for a museum piece
Amazing cars, I love them all! This was the last era of great American cars that were proud to be American and stylish.

I was a child in the 80’s and recall we had both the Cadillac and Jeep in our family. I miss that Jeep.

I know someone who has one of those Cadillac Sevilles, and thought it looked terrible when I first saw it, but the more I see it, I realize it looks pretty ok from the right angles. He's very proud of it; the interior is nice. I've also seen a GNX on the road, someone around Naperville, IL owns one apparently.

When introduced, critics said Seville front didn't match the rear and you have to agree. Buddy had his brand new GNX stolen soon after taking delivery. Always thought thieves probably saved his life.

I owned a Versailles. 302 under the hood. 4 disc brakes. It was fabulous if you overlooked the fuel economy.
85 Cadillac Eldorado Birattz edition has always been my favorite car. The hard top with the stainless steel roof is my favorite
I owned a 1981 Eldorado custom convertible by Hess and Eisenhardt. Beautiful white with red leather interior. It had the V864 engine which worked flawlessly. Still on my top favorites after my 1963 Lincoln Continental 4 for convertible black with red leather interior.
My grandfather owned a 1985 Cadillac Seville Elegante with a wheel on the back of the trunk, cream colored exterior and interior, and it had those classic wheels with the signature Seville cursive engraving. He owned it from 1985-2009. My grandfather babied that thing. Sadly he had to get rid of it because he couldn't find parts for the fixes. I still remember seeing it in person as a little kid, and even my parents driving behind it. Might of even been inside it before. Memories man!
That humpback Seville looks absolutely amazing. I love that body so if you don’t you’re crazy.

I recently drove a gold 86 Lincoln Town Car Signature that I'm working on purchasing and I fell in love. I cannot wait to experience all the car has to offer as it's a low mileage survivor. So so impressed with the quality, the ride, the feather light steering, everything. Truly what an automobile is supposed to be.
You did your homework. I like the fact you are willing to learn about these cars and explain and share. You are honest as well. I like the footage you included as well. I recall all those cars. I was not a fan of the downsized era at GM( 1985-1989/1990) either. GM turned it around starting in 1989. This was a great list. Thank you again.

No, not that much home work unfortunately, he forgot to mention the corvette Calloway twin turbo price tag was 100k, the 1989 trans am turbo , price tag was almost 40k with mark up , the 1988 trans am gta notchback , price tag 38k at dealers, and the mustang saleen supercharged s93, 4pk ish ANS many more not said, but it’s ok he’s close,

When you said "GM turned around starting in 1989" you're def right about that, at least as far as Cadillacs were concerned. The '85-'88 DeVilles and Fleetwoods for example were just simply too damn small and generic. In '89 when they restyled them that was absolutely the right move. That new style gave them more presence, versus an '85-'88 DeVille or Fleetwood that looked like an Oldsmobile Calais with a few extra inches added, with a vinyl roof and opera lights. (Not knocking vinyl roofs and opera lights lol... I do like those things when tastefully applied but they looked like cheap add-ons to that generation of Devilles/Fleetwoods)

At age 63 I love the fact that someone your age is learning about and presenting the history of these cars. I remember them all . Nice job in presentation esp. in adjusting $$ prices for inflation, it makes it easy for your generation to relate to true cost. I also like that you use the modern day equivalent cars as to make it easier for younger generations to know how these older cars were once positioned. Video was nice length, not too short nor too long. I would just delete or lower the back ground music as it was distracting (at least for me) and yes, better audio quality would be great. Keep up the nice work and I subbed your channel. Mike in San Diego.

Kudos to you! Your video was not only informative but interesting & well-edited, too. I was a young teenager when many of these 80s cars about which you spoke came on the scene & you did an excellent job of capturing the “spirit” & mood that accompanied each. It’s easy to minimize these high-end luxury cars 40 years later but, when they debuted, they were a really big deal. And yeah…that Buick GNX was bad ass.

I grew up with 2 Grand Wagoneer’s in the family. One being our family hauler for many years and the other one I drove to High School during the winters. Great vehicles with tons of personality and it gets a lot of attention.
In regards to the Imperial FS Edition, the whole story behind the FS model cancellation goes as follows. Mr. Sinatra was given a New Imperial FS for his personal use from Chrysler. Actually, Mr. Sinatra's Imperial FS was the first Imperial produced since 1975, Frank drove it off the production line personally to much fanfare and media coverage. Unfortunately he experienced engine problems related to the Imperial's "Wizard Engine" computer controlled fuel injection. Ofcourse Chrysler promptly serviced the car each time, claiming to have fixed the problem for good. But as Mr. Sinatra navigated his way through Las Vegas traffic one hot afternoon his Imperial conked out, and refused to re-start, leaving him stranded on busy Las Vegas Blvd. in a traffic jam his car was causing . Mr. Sinatra was irate after this embarrassing situation, he immediately contacted Chrysler, presumably Lee Iacocca himself, demanding his name be taken off the Imperial halfway through the car's second year of production. His wishes were met, the FS model was no more.

I owned a 1976 Ford Granada Ghia Sedan and a 1977 Lincoln Versailles at the same time. While the V is in fact as you described it, “A redesigned Granada” it most certainly didn’t drive like one. My Versailles had the 351 Cleveland engine. The Granada had a 302. The Granada weighed in at just about 3000lbs. The V was a bit over 5000lbs. It was common knowledge that the V was the test bed for all the innovations that went into the 1980 Continental. I thoroughly enjoyed mine and if it weren’t for the sub-par dashboard that hasn’t stood the test of time well, I’d happily get another. I got a 1979 Continental Town Car instead.

@@johneckert1365The Windsor engines were available in several displacements including a 302 cubic, 4.9 liter and 351 5.8. But everyone calls the 302 a 5.0 because it sounds better.😊😊 The Cleveland engine was a 335.
The Mercury Grand Marquis, which was the sister car to the Crown Victoria. The panther cars came out in 1992 and lasted til 2011. The Crown Vic took on the roofline of the Marquis in 1998, so technically, the panther car lasted for 20 model years. The Jeep was 29 model years, so not twice as long. Not being critical, because I am impressed with your willingness to learn about these great cars. The Versailles came out in April 1977. Yes, it was a glorified Granada, but it was, at least for me , an impressive car. First American car with 4 wheel disc brakes, standard. First American car to utilize base coat clear coat paint. The dash was hand stitched leather, and the seats were a huge upgrade not available on Granada or Monarch. When you compare the Versailles to Cavalier, oh, sorry, the Cimarron. Cadillac used the exact dash as the Cavalier. They should have used the more luxurious looking Buick Skyhawks dash. It is also a J car, so it would work and look better. So, in my opinion, the Versailles was a lot more than a Granada. The first Seville was based on a modified Nova Chassis. Car companies do what they can to make the most money for the least cost to them. Keep up the great work. I really enjoyed this video.

Great job on the video. I’ll never forget when our neighbor came home with his brand new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 diesel and admitting he paid $11,000 for it. It was shocking for a car to be over 10k in December 1977. Luckily for him, the diesel was reliable until a dislodged oil filter O-ring caused rod bearing failure at 111,000 miles. They replaced bearings and piston rings and the engine was still running great 185,000 miles later when he sold it, just shy of 300K total.

Similar memory. I was eight years old in 1986 when our next door neighbors sixteen year old daughter came home with her first car. a brand new white two door cutlass supreme With blue Velour interior. I remember my parents and other neighbors walking over to check it out, and how thrilled she was to have it!

The hood ornament from the Chrysler reminded me that a couple of my hoodlum friends in JR High were going around swiping hood ornaments. These guys had bags full of them in their lockers. The Mercedes and Cadillac ornaments were the most highly prized, but they had every marque under the sun. I don’t really know where they found the cars to grab all of them from, because our neighborhood was mostly high end union blue collar families. Our dads were crane operators, elevator repairman, cops, railroad, machinist etc. There were mostly Volvos and Chevys, not Mercedes and Cadillacs. Anyway my friends eventually got caught, and their treasure trove of hood ornaments got confiscated. One of those guys died when we were in Highschool, he wrapped his 84 IROC around a concrete pillar. This video sure brought back the memories!

Good video! I have often wondered what would have happened with the DeLorean if DeLorean would have used a better V6 engine such as the Buick 3.8 turbo. I think that along with using powertrains from GM probably would have helped him with his political/legal troubles.

John DeLorean left GM on bad terms. I doubt they would have partnered with him on the drivetrain. They prob cheered when the Feds tried to get him.

@@MrStacy1974 I'm not sure the drug-running charges against DeLorean were substantiated. Several reports saying the bust was a set-up. DeLorean pissed off a lot of suits at GM; I never put it past them to make JZD a fall guy.

The car was built in Northern Ireland therefore they needed a ready available European engine that could be serviced easily in the States. They didn't have the money to import an engine from the US as DMC had just taken a huge loan from the British Government to keep the plant open. The PRV V6 was already in Volvo and Peugeot cars on sale in the US market. In European tune the engine could put out 160hp standard and up to 300hp with turbocharging. Apart from the drugs bust, John DeLorean and Colin Chapman of Lotus (the DMC 12 was based on the Esprit chassis) were being investigated for defrauding the British Government over the loan money. It is believed that if Chapman had lived beyond 1982 he would have been arrested and charged.

Too funny. I graduated in 80 but still drove my classic 65 Olds that was our old family car that I had to have (I was into classics). 425 engine. I got into a race with the new Trans AM and won...can't believe I didn't get more tickets back then. I probably won that race because I didn't have all of the pollution control shit that the newer ones had. It only had a 2b carb but it still screamed. Bought my first new car in 80 (grand prix) and I heard that the guy that bought my olds threw a rod in the engine racing it. Sucks.

Nice video, only thing, the Crown Vic started as a standard nameplate in 1983 as the LTD Crownvic and went out in 2011. Another, is that the GNX and Grand National are two diff cars. The Grand National was rated at 245HP and nearly half the price of the GNX, which was rated at 300 hp. Both were underrated and other than the side fender heat extractors and wheels, both looked the exact same.

That gorgeous Seville two- door coupe was never offered but one prototype was built. The designers actually paid for it out of their own pockets! Unfortunately management wouldn't go for it. What a shame
36 color options on the Versailles! Back then the car one drove was an extension of their personality. It was fun just watching cars go by and learning all their makes and models. "Going for a drive" was a national past time just like baseball and the advertising reflected that.

The Jeep Wagoneer (and later Grand Wagoneer after Chrysler's acquisition) was so damned full of sole and dripping with style that it remains iconic to this very day. Restored Grand Wagoneers today can cost over 100k in some cases. I've owned an '84 Wagoneer and an '89 Grand Wagoneer. Though they were both averaged around 10 MPG with the AMC 360 V8 and considered "high maintenance" vehicles (plagued with vacuum leaks), they were a dream to drive, like driving somewhere from your living room. A real asphalt magnet in the snow and could tow anything if paired with a towing package.

I went to a High School Military Ball mid 80's chauffeured by my neighbor "Sonny R." in his Seville Elegante bustle-back diesel. I loved that car, the styling and having him drive me and my date Jackie. It made me kingpin for an evening. I think I paid him 25 bucks for 100 dollars worth of effort. I didn't realize he was doing it to help the dumb neighbor kid grow up a bit. Great man, I will always remember that car fondly. Real wonder years stuff.
My mom had the Cadillac Seville Elegante with every option! I have a photo with her and my two older sisters standing next to it. We were taking my sister Valerie back to her base before she was deployed to an aircraft carrier. Such nice memories.

Great video, I really like your appreciation for these older cars and your inquisitive nature. I do have to comment though regarding the Versailles, It was not simply a tarted up Granada nor Monarch. Lots more sound proofing , advanced, double isolated shocks, as well as a host of technical features that other cars wouldn't even think of for years!

I still love the Biarritz. In case you don't know, Biarritz was a hot luxury vacation area in France before the Riviera totally stole its thunder. GM used both names, of course. And Versailles is of course the name inspiration for the Versailles. I guess cribbing names was an easy way to do marketing.

My uncle just bought a new 1983 Seville , man it was beautiful at the time, black and gray color, with the 4-6-8 motor v8 efi My uncle said he spend exactly 32k plus financing, man that was the price of a house with 2 bedrooms back in the days, And then there was the corvette Calloway twin turbo he forgot to mention in the 80’s error, Car and drivers quotation was, the fastest car ever made in the United States, beating the GNX, is why they said let’s build it, as in 86-87 corvette was in 3rd place, for quickness. Dude my first car was a 1986 Grand Wagoneer and that thing was a beast. It had a sunroof and electric rear window, fake wood paneling, fake leather, and of course a tape player. It was so big I could take all my friends at once wherever we were going. I loved it. Only bad thing I can say is the gas mileage was horrible and it blew several head gaskets over the years. Don't care, still want another one.
