I think for people watching at the time the EM 96 goal from Bierhoff is more iconic, since it was the first tournament where this was an official rule and it was also the only game of the tournament that was decided by Golden Goal. The whole background story sounds like a typical sports movie. Bierhoff was totally unknown in Germany at this point. He had left the Bundesliga in his early 20ies after not being able to establish himself as a regular 1st team player on 3 different teams. He then played in Austria and mostly the Italian Serie B and just had his breakout season in Serie A in Udinese, which was club almost nobody in Germany had even heard off. He gave his international debut 4 months before the EM and didn´t play in any other game during the tournament. He scored the 1:1 equalizer 4 minutes after being subbed in and then won the golden goal. He had success with Udinese, was topscorer for Serie A in one season, went on to play for Milan, became German footballer of the year and was the manager of the German national team for 13 years. A lot of these things would have probably never happened if he wouldn´t have been subbed in.

I think the Golden Goal in football should make a comeback, even if for a limited time. In celebrating its centennial, for example. This rule adds excitement, intensity, and unpredictability to matches. Seize memorable moments to enrich football history.

There’s something about the match ending with the ball hitting the back of the net that I love. I wish they would bring golden goal back.

Bierhoff. God I love Euro 96. Germany vs Czech Republic was a great game too, slightly overshadowed by England vs Germany

No. 7 actually scared me. He was lucky that it was a Champions League match. If it were a national match, that could have resulted in injury or even death.

I believe they created this golden goal to make extra time more exciting and the goal would be more dramatic, more valuable too.But it ended with both teams not wanting to play risky in extra time, extra time got so boring and even if the golden goal happened it still couldn't help, that Henry's goal against Cameroon is a proof of it

Many of us North Americans love the Golden Goal (i.e., ice hockey), but FIFA doesn't. Too bad.

I loved Golden Goal, they need to bring it back. Although I do think they should modify it, awarding a PK can be controversial so I think they should exempt PKs from Golden Goal. So PKs and goals coming back from a PK wouldn't be Golden Goals. It would have to be a regular goal that isn't a PK to take the lead in order for it to be Golden Goal

By not counting PKs you make fouls legal, also this means team A could score 1,2,5,10,...infinite goals that all wouldn't count. Final score: A vs. B - 7:1 but B still wins because their goal was regular? Sorry, but that is stupid.

It doesn't matter that I punshed another player in the face his PK goal doesn't count anyway. (Better a red card than a lost match and that only if you are very obvious.) Golden goal should replace penalty shootout entierly, penalty shootouts are about 80% luck since goalkeepers normaly just guess where the ball is going, and don't involve footballing skills like passing, dribiling, heading, tackling, etc. In short I would like to see unlimited amount of 15minute extra time periods untill a goal is scored, for the reasons mentioned.

@@sicilyeverywhere well if u closely watch the game again, both teams korea and italy played dirty, not only just korea. The ref was not clear all to korea n italy. Some italian players played so fucking dirty. I wont say italy got some disadvantages or there was no home advantages at all, but italy played dirty as well. And leaving all those things, the football match itself was very dramtic and hot n competitive
