The byplay between old pros Phil Silvers and Zero Mostel is classic.

This movie never ceases to make me laugh. Two bits that make me laugh are Hysterium and Pseudolus talking to the old man and Pseudolus's line " and a strange little boy" , and later Hysterium's "No! I meant yes, it just came out no."

So the doctor not only fights Daleks but deals in slaves? I suppose he has to pay for his repairs to the TARDIS somehow.

Over the years I have directed two stage productions and have played every possible male role except for Erroneous and Marcus Lycus. I also had the pleasure of seeing the original Broadway production (Brian Davies, the original Broadway Hero, was a friend).

The first time I saw the film, I think it was the punchline from #2 that made me laugh the hardest.

Thank you for the compilation, Mark. Unfortunately, my favourite line is missing: When being asked to punish Pseudolus, Hysterium (Jack Gilford) promises "I shall be brutal".

@@ChattingwithMarkStise I'll add a few: I am my ideal (really, Gloriosus gets some of the best lines). Was One a good year? Sir. You're in need of a sooth sayer. How did you know? I'd be a fine soothsayer if I didn't.

Why does this have so few views? This is a classic of my childhood. You where sold to a Syrian Shepard? He comes to collect you today? You must run 7 times around the 7 hills of Rome! They'll be bringing him out any moment now. Bring another victim to the altar!

An underappreciated movie. The late Broadway critic Walter Kerr, reviewing the 1974 revival, said the movie had forgotten the jokes. This proves that it did not. It was filmed by a British director, and British humor is different from American in that it doesn't shout out punch lines as if the audience wouldn't get it otherwise. Nearly every joke from the stage show (if not the songs) is in the movie, but you have to listen for them.

Actually, the director, Richard Lester, is an American director, now based in the UK. He had just directed A Hard Day's Night and Help! when he was signed on to Forum. His style is evident here - with the jagged editing and frenetic pace. Eventually, he would direct some of the finest films of the 60's, 70's and 80's : Petulia, The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers, Robin and Marian, Superman II and III.

There's not a single shot/ line or action in this movie that doesn't contain a joke. Excellent video : but more hilarious omissions : He raped Thrace Thrice. He Raped Thrace Thrice ? Ye, he did, and then he did it again and again. .and the wry : Was 3 a good year ? The hilarious Roy Kinnear Gladiator lesson....." those are the mightiest thighs that i ever have seen, i mean..."

The first time I saw this, I was sore the next day from laughing so much. It's tragic that it will never be performed again because it is so sexist (not a word I throw around a lot, but you gotta admit that it is sexist, in that mid-60s, short skirted, tight topped, big bosom-y, young, blond actress sort of way). But my favorite joke is: Lycus (pulling his wig off) - "I'm NOT a virgin." Erronius (looking into the camera) - "Those FILTHY pirates." Yes, you have to know the context for it to be funny.
