The thing I see folks not thinking about as they prep is building a library of actual books, maps and pamphlets. It will be common sense to the old school folks but younger people have been trained to go to the internet and most likely that won't be an option. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos- you will save a lot of folks 👍

I have no friends and no family. I plan on staying in place. I've been prepping for a very long time and I have no doubt that I will be ok.

Remember, most water heaters hold approximately 40 gallons of potable water. Attach a short RV hose to the outlet of the drain valve, open the valve, if water flow is slow, then open pressure relief valve.

Remember to turn off electric heaters at the fuse box -- otherwise it'll burn itself out when power comes back on. Also turn off gas to gas-heaters.

Instead of cold packs I freeze empty milk plastic jugs and keep them in the freezer. They can easily be moved to an ice chest, an additional benefit as the ice melts you have drinking water. I really respect the time and effort that you put into your Vlogs. Thank you so much😀😀.

Make sure you wash those jugs very well before putting in filtered/boiled water! Or alternately, you can buy 1 gallon jugs of distilled water and freeze them keeping your freezer completely full which is how it's most efficient anyway! Keeping a cooler (or two) full of these jugs will increase your potable water storage! Save any grey water for flushing toilets! I keep several 6-gallon and 3-gallon jugs full of potable water, using them by rotation to water indoor and outdoor plants, thus getting the contents pretty fresh!

If you're relying on an ice chest for a bug-out food preservation method, get 2 ice chests. Keep your frozen food in one and your beverages in the other. You'll need to open and close that beverage chest a lot more frequently than you will the "food" chest. Every time you open an ice chest, the hot air rushes in and you're starting all over to re-cool that air in the chest. Having two chests will help you with that.

Don't use freezer packs, use (various sizes) of water bottles. Once they thaw, you have drinking water

How do you know how much water to put in them so they don't bust when they start freezing?

I started prepping in 2015 while living with my daughter and her family because I lost my home to fire and I had health issues. I explained about all the reasons to prep but they, my 4 grown kids, only kinda prepped during COVID. Now Mama's just crazy again. I've been in my own place for 3 years now and still prepping. I am constantly gifting them prepping items at random times and Christmas. Everything from PK and apple pectin to buddy heaters. As with most moms, they are my life.

Swimming pools, even kiddie pools, are another great source of emergency water. A common occurrence here in AZ is power outages during monsoon season, which is basically all summer, though this year we haven't had much of one. We have had power outages 2 or 3 times this summer and while they only lasted a few hours, it was nice to have available water in our "adult kiddie pool" as my wife calls it, an 8 foot around by 2 foot deep pool that holds approximately 750 gallons to fill the toilets so we could continue to use them.

I would suggest you add another care point: in such an emergency, take extra care of your hands and feet. Keep good gloves (work and warmth), and good walking boots. In a grid down situation, you need to carry out extra tasks and move about. Good lists.

My wife and I, were not full on "Preppers" until the Covid Pandalerium! We suddenly jumped into Prepper mode, and have been ever since!

If I knew I only had one last trip to the store? DOG FOOD!I have what I need for old Fido, but he loves his kibble. It only lasts for about a year. Dogs are omnivores. If it comes to it, he can have what I'm having!

Well, most dry dog food has about a year and a half of shelf life, so keeping that much and keeping it rotated should keep Fido happy! And no matter what some people say, dogs can eat most of the same things people do but they shouldn't be given some things that we do eat like chocolate and we people too often eat junk foods! And my neighbors have horses!

I found tourit ice/ water bags on Amazon that allow you to fill the bag with ice and use it in your cooler, but as it melts, it has a spout so that you can drink the water. This may not be the most durable, but they give you an option.

A couple of lifestraws are very essential.

Excellent refresher course here Scootch!! We've been preppers for over 28 years and still to this day I watch your videos and others in the prepper community! You never can have too much info!!

My spouse and I make certain we never allow our vehicles' fuel tanks drop below half-full. If some emergency happens and we need to evacuate at short notice, we will not be waiting in a long line at a service station when we could be traveling. We have boxes of Mt. House meals and large bottles of drinking water ready to load into our vehicles along with a couple of butane stoves, butane cylinders and some nesting camp cookware. And we have area maps and road atlases just in case onboard navigation systems are not working. And we keep a stash of cash at home to take with us just in case credit card readers and ATMs are not working along our route when we evacuate. We have all sorts of preps for sheltering in place and for just in case the local power grid goes down. Many of our small electronic devices are protected with EMP pulse-resistant bags, including our little Jackery power bank and the portable solar panel for it. We also have a motorhome that has an onboard diesel generator as well as two roof-mounted solar panels connected to a set of big lithium batteries. If there is no EMP, but the local power grid is down, we will have power in our motorhome. The RV has a refrigerator/freezer that can be powered with propane and we keep the RV's propane tank filled. We also have a countertop ice maker. And we could fill the freshwater tank more than the one-third full that we usually keep it. If we have advance notice of a power outage, we could connect the RV to shore power and cool down the refrigerator, transfer some food from our house refrigerator and freezer and then switch to propane power when the local power grid goes down. We would also want to wash all the laundry, vacuum the floors and bake some cornbread in our ovens, use our bread machine and bread mixes and pop some popcorn with the air popper while we still had grid power. Yes, we have multiple ways to do grid down cooking, but we would like to start the power outage with some already cooked food that does not need refrigeration. We would also fill every cooking pot, mixing bowl and bucket with tap water for washing and cleaning while the water pumping stations were still working. And after the local power grid fails and we have finished our emergency chores, we would want to take showers while we still had some warm water in the house water tank. Later on we could use the on-demand heater in the RV to take short showers. And we have multiple grid-down ways of receiving emergency bulletins and news as well as multiple ways of keeping ourselves entertained while we shelter in place.

I bought some(3) of the cheap 6 gal water jugs from Wal Mart several years ago to just keep some water stored in.(Just sitting in the garage) A couple of weeks ago I had to throw one of them away because one of the seams started leaking. Just a suggestion to buy "Quality" storage equipment, so, when you need it, it's there/works for you.

Most everyone has it in their home but petroleum jelly aka Vaseline will stop bleeding when placed on a wound and if your allergic to to ingredients in antibiotic ointment it's also can take the place of that

I keep my freezer doors filled with water bottles to help keep in the cold if the power goes out. Thanks Sootch. I've been following you since 2020. Appreciate your expertise

Same. I use those frozen bottles in water jugs or coolers regularly. Nice side note is you can drink them once your done with them.

Get into shape! If you are not fit all of the equipment prep in the world will do very little. 😊

Great advice and reminder about having physical maps of the area you either live in or want to travel over. So many folk depend on their electronics now. Here in the UK you can purchase waterproof maps . Either printed directly onto the plastic or laminated.

Groceries. If it's crazy shtf don't go to the big box or grocery stores your local convenience store may be more expensive but you can stock up on what you can and not get trapped in lines, traffic, mayhem.

I'm entirely on my own. My kids, with 1 exception out of 4, are so self serving, wouldn't lift a finger to help me. And the 1 that would help, lives in a different state. So, I've prepped as much as is humanly possible. I trust in God to protect me.

@mattschmitt9924 no parent is perfect. My kids had a normal upbringing. But they made some decisions that changed their lives in a negative way and ultimately changed our family, as a whole. They made their own decisions. I have remained steadfast in communicating my love for them, but my only hope is that the Lord will do whatever is necessary to cause them to seek His face, repent, and trust Him for their salvation. I see my situation being played out with so many other families. It's happening everywhere. I cannot change my children. But, I can lay my concerns for them at God's feet, who hears me, and who loves my kids more than I ever could.

Correct - nothing is guaranteed but death and giving an account to the Lord for your life. Physical preps help handle some unplanned emergencies but do nothing for the one thing you know you’ll experience someday

I don't have a wood stove in my house, but I've made hobo stoves, and I've stockpiled firewood. When SHTF, I'll be able to boil water and cook. If the neighbours need to cook on my hobo stoves, they can. It's great to have them premade and ready for SHTF.

I've got 3 camping stoves and a plethora of mess tins. I now keep one camping stove at my ex's. I'll leave some mess tins gas cans and food and water there too. If my son is at his dad's when SHTF, at least they'll be able to boil water for hotwater bottles, to wash and sterilise, and to cook. I gave my son some wool blankets last winter, and hotwater bottles. And I just bought him all new pillows and pillow cases. I'll buy him a new quilt and new quilt cover next month.

When the SHTF, it's best to live quiet, remote, bush craft using renewable resources and skills like foraging, hunting, and gardening. Paper maps. No phones. Just low key. What ya absolutely DON'T want is to be that lone light off in the distance (because all of the power is out but you were smart enough to get a generator). Because people will become animals and savages. You can prep all the live long day but you need to also prepare for the hoards of Takers as well.

I’m always finding gaps in my prep. Organize and keep record of your inventory!

And if you loose power, a fuller freezer will hold the food better than an empty freezer.

A great video to help to do a bit of a reset and focus. This is the perfect time for it

Just semantics, but it'll make a difference to someone; you don't get "really dehydrated" after 3 days without water. At 5:03, "You can only live for 3 days without water before you really start to get dehydrated". You get really dehydrated after 2 days without water. That third day, you can barely open your hands, let alone stand for any period of time without getting lightheaded and fainting. In 3 days you die and it doesn't just happen at the 72 hour mark. You're dying for an entire day before your body gives out. Don't think, "I've got 3 days." You have a day and a half to find water without help...

Add at least one fire extinguisher and a few fire blankets.

One of my main prepping complaints is the cost of purpose made water storage containers. I am currently using a couple of improvised containers but now I see a real need for a couple of very sturdy 5 gallon containers. Thanks Don.

Check out the aquarium stores, esp. the ones that carry salt water fish. They may make their own salt water on site, but if they don't, they go through square, thick walled water containers and may be willing to give some to you, or sell them to you. Often for cheaper than the 'prepping' ones. Cheers!!

Ziploc bags with a zipper on them when disposing poltry trimings, bones, fat, etc. since magots and flys can be a real neusence. Eliminating odors and attractants. And for soiled clothing. And then trash bags 2mil carpenter bags. Or visit places that offer convenient trash cans on premises to toss sealed garbage bags. Power Bank. 24 mile repeaters to keep in touch if cell phones are down and extra batteries for them. A whistle helps find one another in a crowd of people. A great life line. Also if you are keeping one room occupied set up a tent to hold the capacity of family members and a Mr Heater Buddy. But not inside your tent! The hot heat rises upward and could damage the tent material. Have a cooler (without ice )to prevent drinking water from freezing .

Get your laser range finder out. Find ranges to known visible locations. Make notes with the ranges written on a "fire plan sketch". Make a different one for each window/opening at your location. Laminate each one and keep it near to each window/opening for quick reference. When adrenaline is high and things are happening fast, having the info readily available, accessible, and easy to understand, is very helpful.

@@juliabrown5948 If you know of a friend/family member who was in the military (preferrably infantry, spec ops, etc.), ask them questions, pick their mind. Also, you can get surplus infantry military manuals online. They contain easy to understand instructions for the basics. Concentrate on ones with titles like "Squad in the defense", "Defensive operations", "Platoon defensive ops", etc.

Oh yeah- everyone needs fire extinguishers!!!

food grade 5 gallon buckets with lids filled with clean drinking water. Put those buckets in your chest freezer, same thing with used milk jugs. They will help keep your food cool longer + a full freezer is more efficient than a half empty one. When the water melts, you can drink it.

I live in a rural area with a bunch of land. I’m staying home. Worst case things get really bad and I’m going to my forever home with Jesus. Happy either way

Yep, I'm on my own and have only one family member that could help me but only if she's close by. She lives in the next state over, about an hour away, so if it all takes a dive were both on our own. I, too, will look forward to that forever home with my Jesus! My daughter can meet me there!

You didn't list "get cash." One of the first things you should do is withdraw as much cash as you can as quickly as you can. I don't like storing a lot of cash in my home. But the FIRST think I'm going to do when I SMELL SHTF coming, is to get as much cash as possible. If I'm wrong, I can always re-deposit it back in the bank. And remember there are different types and phases of SHTF situations. Only in the most absolutely dire type of SHTF will money be worthless. But in MOST types of SHTF situations, the ability to use credit cards/checks/electronic funds transfers etc. will be one of the first things to go south!

With the maui fires this type of thing has been on my mind more & more I mean we prep but prepping for something like that is tough imagine you got 2 mins max to grab everything essential and go from wherever you are. I'd say keep it light have a bag in your home and also with you on the go with essentials to live.

Heads up.I thought i was fairly well prepared 6 months freeze dried food water catchment 1200 watts of solar panels and battery's and 2 generators reloading equipment lots of camping gear. AND THEN IT HAPPENED.I live on a 265 acre farm in central Texas and a fire 1 1/2 years ago burned around 50.000 acres including my property.I had just enough time to grab most of my 6 guns 2 of my Guitars my Dog and a stash of cash and get of the property.When i returned 2 days later everything i had was gone. the one thing i was not prepared for got me and 20 years worth of preparing.COVER ALL YOU BASES. In a cold climate yes can store food outside. As a rule expect it to maybe be frozen not refrigerated But. Critters may try for it so put it in a metal box. Such as a surplus ammunition box or a non functional freezer sitting in the yard so they can't get it

The big problem with perscription medicine is, your pharmacy will only give you the normal 1 - 3 month supply. And thats only if you are close to being ready for a refill! You can't get a 1 year supply!

There are so many simple things you can do. I buy vinegar by the gallon. When the bottle's empty I rinse it, refill with water, and stick it in my basement. Not good for drinking (well, unless things are really bad) but perfectly good for washing and flushing the toilet. One less gallon I have to haul from the pond is a good gallon.

You could add about an ounce of plain bleach to those re-used vinegar jugs to help keep fresher for a longer time and if you need to drink it just open the jug and let it breath for about an hour and most of the chlorine will have evaporated out by then! Don't forget that your water heater has a lot of water in it and the water in the toilet tank can be drank after boiling!

I am a fan of 2 liter soda bottles for water storage but we don't drink much soda anymore. I am not afraid of asking friends and family to save them for me. Most of them don't know why I save the bottles and if they ask, it's to use for craft projects.

For night vision get another light source versus the built-in one. As that red glow says "Shoot here" to some. They all have built-in light sources but they are not designed to be used for that kind of defense. Rather have someone shooting 2 feet off to the side than at my face. But even some of the cheap ones work pretty well. Always good info.

Dying of thirst is one of the most painful ways to die. Tnx,I just picked up a solar battery maintainer for my generator. The heater buddy that can be used indoors has a fuel filter in it. Good to have a spare filter as its one of the reasons why it can be used indoors.

FYI my wife buys some food from hello fresh or something like that and it comes with cold packs in a insulated cardboard box. We have had some power outages and I have re-frozen the cold packs to keep things cool and it works great and kinda cheap and it’s in my possession already soooo use what works.

Anyone think about keeping an eye on the water pipes in the house in winter if the power is out? It only takes a couple of days of frigid weather to freeze pipes in some locations. Shut the water off if you can and drain the pipes a bit.

We have metal hot water bottles. We can take off the cap and reheat the water right in the 'canister'. We made little fleece bags to put them in so we don't get burned. Stick those in your blankets and it will keep you warm! Haven't tried it yet, but I have a tent to use indoors to make a mini room inside the living room.

KEEP IN MIND sometimes, like in an earthquake, cell service may be down, BUT it will only be out in your area. You can still call out of state. Have someone who you can all call to let them onow you are ok

Have you seen LuminAID? Lightweight, foldable solar charged lanterns give off a decent amount of light. The larger ones can charge your cellphone. My first aid kit is in a old ammo box from the local military surplus store.

Interesting list with common sense stuff. I like to think of it less as a top 10, however, and more like a countdown to point zero. Obviously, if your first sign of an apoc is the flashes and mushrooms, then you are starting at point zero. With something like an economic collapse possibly giving you a slow countdown of several months or more as things just steadily get worse on a downward slide - so much so that you might know that the apoc point is coming but still have to do things like go to work, etc, as it creeps in. If you have zero - then his #1 is the #1 - get your people and get them to your safe (safest) location. If you have 15 minutes - then that doesn't really change, except that your options might be wider for how you do it. If you have a few days (incoming mega storm), then some of those things on the list (gassing up, last minute supplies) make sense if you can do them FAST. Consider COVID, the people who rushed and panic bought TP are the people who caused the run on TP and the months long shortages - but they also are the ones who always had plenty of TP. You REALLY need to instinctively fill up your tanks ANY time you hear something spooky in the news - because gas in one place even the most prepared of us cannot go too deep since it is perishable and difficult to store in true bulk. If you have several weeks, you will face that hard, hard choices - when do you stop building preps for things getting worse and when are you at the point where things are worse and you need to use your preps to keep your dwindling cash going to the end? Still, all good food for thought. Family first. The greatest danger in the last moments will be from those who are desperate also trying to get supplies while they exist. Apocs start hard as people panic, go quiet as people huddle in, get dangerous again as people come out because they are desperate, then even out as only those who can survive are still surviving and those living off of others attrition their way out.

With regards to a wood stove and/or fire place ... you will want to have your chimney checked and cleaned, especially if you don't regularly use it.

ABC - Always Be Charging! Life these days seems to be battery powered, it's challenging but important to keep it all charged.

If the power goes out, there will be no cell service. Do your best to be sure your vehicles are never below half a tank of fuel. More if your bug out destination if too far to reach with half a tank. Realize you'll probably have more people than you thought - family and friends know you prep. Start growing food now,; you will NOT get it right on the first try. Potatoes and corn provide the most calories for a given area. While some of your corn should be sweet corn, most should be dent corn (aka: field corn). That is harvested as a grain when it's dry and it's what we use for corn meal, corn syrup, Bourbon, etc.

About the 3 days without water, most people will need to go to the hospital by the 3rd day without water, because depending on your state of health, after 3 days even if you drink water your body might not be able to process that water due to a severe dehydration, so yeah...

Freeze water in empty plastic bottles. Leave a few in each freezer. This will keep the food in the freezer nice and cold.

I went to shooting club again tonight, I'll be doing 3 sessions per week. I started back at HAM RADIO CLUB last night. I'll be taking Intermediate licence in the spring.

I take several prescription medications. I always get (via mail order) a 90 day supply (it's cheaper that way), but cannot get any more than that. I cannot order an additional amount. That means I have anywhere from 5 to 95 days of medicine at any one time. If anybody knows of a way I can get a years worth that I can renew every six months, that would be great.

Well I'm prepared to bug in. Dont need to bug out. We have a huge wel with electric and manual pump if needed. Don't need to go anywhere. I'm already 40 miles away from down town. Funny people I barely know will say. I here your the gun guy just because I worked at a gun store for a long time after Marine corps. I'm coming over your house when chips at the fan. I'm looking I'm screwing the icing or not. Cuz none of this matters. Everytime I prepare for something that never happens. So I'm fully prepared.

I've been thinking of using double seal zip lock bags of ice in the freezer at all times and transferring some bags of block ice to the fridge, but I also have a counter top ice maker that works with my solar generator. Also having plenty of thermoses is good too. To keep hot water on hand for all types of things, hot tea, dish water, hot water bottles, sponge bathing etc. So I make lots of hot water when I do and then use thermoses. I use mylar blankets in windows. Using double stick window tape in the insulation aisle at Wallyworld. Go slow, use clean DRY hands, make it as taut as possible. This will make your windows 2 way mirror. May still need curtain or blanket for night time but you can see out but NOT in during the day!

For the bath, get just a cheap plastic painters tarp and a roll of duct tape to keep in the bathroom ready to go to line the bath, put the plug in first just incase the tarp does get ripped.

Why would you need to line the inside of the tub? Maybe make some kind of cover for the top but why line the tub?

I absolutely will never prep fridge food and freezer food. I do dried food like rice, beans, pasta, and cans. I buy canned meat and veg that could be eaten from the can if need be. I bake hardtack. I have enough hardtack for a couple of months. I've got ghee, powdered eggs, mineral oil coated eggs, and powdered milk.

I dry-can in Mason jars which is much cheaper than any other methods as the jars can be used many, many times! Just make sure that you keep lots of extra lids!

We live in the country, have a well, generator to pump the well, all propane cooking, wood burning stove, 4 freezers full of food, I have a huge garden, fruit/nut trees, livestock, I can/dehydrate/freeze dry. We try to be as prepared as possible for what’s coming. Just been busy organizing everything.

God help us all

I have learned one thing recently and that is with the Phones/GPS etc. it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find Paper Maps anymore. Try finding a ROAD ATLAS like we all used to buy from Rand McNally. I drove Long Haul Truck back in the 1970's and 80's and we lived by those old things. I got some new ones as a "Prep" item a few years ago and stashed them in my supplies. Luckily I still remember and have and old notebook I kept from my trucking days and many of the old roads, shortcuts that I drove on are still there today. Once the Interstate Highways come to a complete stop, knowing the old roads could save your life if you have to be mobile instead of staying in your SAFE PLACE!!! HAVE A PLAN PEOPLE... with several alternatives as back-ups.

I got one last spring from Amazon (large print). Made copies of all the surrounding states, slipped them into a page protector sleeve and put in each of my kids vehicles.

I got two woodstoves seven cords of firewood ,500 gallons of 91 octane fuel with stabilizer. seven 100 pound pound bottles of propane ,18 20 pound bottles of propane, three generators, small medium large oh, well, which I can run off of generators and even a hand picture pump like the old days, bulletproof vest for all family members rounds of different ammo from buckshot to small rifle and pistol. Three years of food I think I’m good. Friends and family make fun of me.
