+sabastian bishop yeah Tokyo ghoul is 100% horror. : blood, murder, the cannibalism, the torture ( involving putting centipedes into someone's head to name only one part), constant death, threats round every corner and that's without even mentioning how fucked up the main characters life is- ie everything we see, added to the fact his mother abused him, and the possibility of rape during torture and the rest. If anyone says that's anything but horror they're kidding themselves.

I just love that Higurashi is finally getting some well deserved praise, I got the Manga as a 16th birthday present from my brother, then I watched the anime. Not even Corpse Party messed me up as much as Higurashi did.

If you enjoyed Higurashi you should watch Berserk , I really recommend you watch the movies and anime, maybe even read the manga. It's absolutely fantastic and trust me, the Eclipse scene will not sit well with you.

+nerd queen I think it depends on your age. I myself did NOT think "Tokyo Ghoul" was scary but it wasn't boring either.... But if you're looking for something kinda scary and definitely "creepy" watch "The Curse of Kazuo Umezo" alone in the dark with the volume high! That definitely creeped me out! Just the way it's drawn is creepy! WIcked City was creepy too but I saw that years ago.

When you feel so inclined, look up "Ayakashi" and "Mononoke." They're both worthy of being on this list.

- DatRandomDude - I actually liked Another specifically for its horror aspect. Towards the end of the series I was on edge during every scene because every stupid little misstep could bring death to one of the characters and I really liked the atmosphere. But I'll admit it lacked character depth. Shiki I could never finish. I just didn't like it. Maybe I'll give it another try someday. And Higurashi was great, but I felt the real "horror"-aspect was toned down after the first story arc. The first four episodes were the scariest IMO. And in the second season they dropped the "horror"-aspect almost completely.

It's pretty much sacrilege that Tokyo Ghoul isn't even mentioned, let alone if it was, it would have to be in the top three, maybe five at the very least! And Black Butler ought to be on there, too. It's much scarier than more than half the entries on this list.

Tokyo ghoul and aot isnt scary and is mostly pyschlogical thriller turn to ghoul and titan and killing them its most fighting they are badass anime

I don't normally like WatchMojo's videos, especially the ones on indie films and music, but I actually don't mind most of their anime videos. I mean, don't get me wrong, I have my disagreements and/or mental adjustments but for the most part they aren't too bad. Sucks that I've seen most of them on literally all of the videos but I think that these are relatively solid lists on sub-genres that I send to people who ask me about what would be good starter animes for certain sub-genres. I, however, usually have to look to avid anime watchers to find things I haven't seen yet but kudos to WatchMojo for actually doing a list genre that they don't suck at...Never thought I'd be saying that.

Another was my very first horror anime. Not only was it scary on a haunting level, with very little jump scares, the soundtrack also creeps the bejeesus out of me. Not to mention the kick ass cinematography too. The Edits and scenes. Eye candy of a timeless horror anime.

Heck yeah Pet Shop of Horrors! Though the episode with the rabbits freaks me out the every time. The manga and it's sequel are really good too.

Serial Experiments Lain is my favorite anime, so just seeing it make the list warms my soul.

Corpse Party should be made into a game.

Would Psycho-Pass be classed as psychological horror? Seeing as that series is friggin scary at times but its only 2 series long dont remeber the episode lengths buts its on netflix so check it out if you want to

Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho Pass also deserve a mention. With some pretty intense imagery and psychological horror mixed in, its definitely worth a watch.The first one starts off slow but builds tension as the story develops.

Ghost Stories should've been #1. Nothing tops it in well-written characters, building suspense, and horrific scenery.

Ghost hunt is a pretty good horror anime to watch at night. It was written by the same person who made Shiki as well.

I dunno... Anime horror hasn't quite done it for me yet. Maybe it's more difficult to immerse myself in an animation to get scared, but it's not really about the gore for me or thriller style serial killers. I just like really fucked up monsters stalking characters and not knowing where they are until someone realizes this horrifying abomination is right behind them. I liked the monster designs in things like "The Thing" and "Evil Dead 2" where everything was really twisted and unnatural. And I liked having absolutely no clue what was going to happen next because everything was so unpredictable.

Ghost Hunt the anime to me was more light because it leaned heavily on the main girl liking Naru and other light endearing aspects of the series, but the manga...legit scared the shit out of me. The ending was a bit disappointing but everything else was perfect!

Thank you watch mojo for introducing me to serial experiment lain. I may no longer be subscribed but you introduced me to one of my new favorite tv shows ever. To anyone curious, watch sel right now! This show might not be the best animated, voice acted or written out there, but it makes up for it with an oppressive atmosphere, imagery that ranges from creepy to disturbed, and a theme and concept that still holds up to day and Is more relevant then the creators could have imagined. Enjoy the six-seven hours!

another was such a beautiful anime for me. I don't know what it was about it, but it completely caught me off guard. After I finished it is was nearly in tears.

My first anime horror was Vampire Hunter D, the original from back in 1985. The update is pretty good, but I still love the original more.

I can say cool list. Saw some of these anime even back in the early 2000's especially Boogiepop Phantom on G4 before it got uncool and now canceled. No really I did see it they used to have an anime block there.

My favorite is Ghost Hunt. It starts slow, then gets creepier with each new haunted place.

I read the manga version of Another first and seen a bit of the anime, and I agree that it's deserve the #1 spot. It been many months and it still send a chill down my back when I think about it. If it wasn't for the Final Destination series, I could a American Adaption of this happening.

Also, if we're enlisting anime by genre, i'm nominating Etotama, Assassination Classroom and Heaven's Lost Property for comedy anime.

Im so glad you included When They Cry, but where do we even watch the show? It's not on Funimation or Crunchyroll. I saw episodes 1-9 on a reaction channel.
