Actually seeing adult themes in these shows makes these shows age better. So many kids shows you grow out of by the time you're 10 years old. It's neat to have those kinds of moments you don't quite notice as a kid but care about when you grow older.

According to Tom Ruegger, the joke was originally supposed to end with Yakko saying: "FINGERprints!", then Dot just chucked Prince out the window. "I don't think so" was actually adlibbed by Dot's voice actor, Tress MacNeille.

The flintstones started out as basically a cartoon version of the Honeymooners and was marketed towards adults (which was why it was on prime time). They discovered that more kids were watching it then adults so they cut the cigarette advertising, eased back the more adult storylines, added a few things that would appeal to kids (like pebbles) and turned it into a family show. It actually became even more popular after they did that.

I was a teenager when some of these were on so I got the innuendos. However, when I was younger, any adult themes flew right over my head. Even the 80's cartoon that I still watch called "The Smurfs" had some light innuendos. I can't pin point one right now. I know it was from when Papa Smurf turned the Gargamel created Smurfette into a blonde headed beauty. The only woman in a sea of male Smurfs. I'd have to go back and watch some more because the innuendos were few and far between.

There is an episode of Rugrats that I thought was really twisted. Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil all talk about abandonment. Each child has a scene where their parents come to their crib and they are hungry. Their bottle is gone but they won't give them either any more milk or not enough. Their clothes are tattered and worn out, the wind is blowing. In Phil and Lil's scene one of the twins either gets more milk than the other or one doesn't get any milk at all. I used to think it was lost media, I haven't watched any episodes but I looked on the Wikipedia and didn't see it. I remember the entire episode being that plot but it could have just been a side plot so it wasn't in the plot description for the show. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I remember it really vividly because I was really sheltered as a child and so the fear of abandonment really freaked me out, I remember seeing it more than once

I think strongly disagree that Mariam ruined people's childhood because some of those kids who grew up watching Hey Arnold had parents with alcohol and drug problems or didn't have a great relationship with their parents. My parents loved each other, but it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. It got bad to the point where my father moved out and lived in an apartment. Even when they were apart they tried their best to get back together. But it never happened because my father died of a heart attack in his sleep. It was before I graduated elementary. It could be drugs, alcohol, porn, hell, even sugar along with other things that could lead to a breakup or even someone's death. There are many children that learn this the hard way. Sure tv shows are about escapism and it's definitely no exception for kids. But in shows like Hey Arnold you have to make the characters more relatable and that requires you to "take off the kid's gloves." And that's why Mariam is the best clean version of what alcoholism is for a kids show. If you think I'm wrong then watch Bojack Horseman or Morel Orel. Clay makes Mariam look like a saint in comparison.

I have a birthday in late October. It's cool to have a birthday on or close to Halloween when you're a kid, but once you get older, it starts to get depressing. If you're lucky enough to have heads remember your birthday, you won't get decent gifts from anybody because they blew all their money on candy, costumes, decorations and isht. Maybe they'll hit you off a week or two afterwards, but it's just not the same.

10:58-11:08 or 10:58-11:09 : Honestly, before I saw this video not only have I ever seen that “Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” episode with the sitting-on-a-banana reference but I’ve also never known that the song “Miss American Pie” was about saying “bye” to your virginity. I had no idea that “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” actually meant “Bye, bye, my virginity” and that the term “Miss American Pie” was slang for one’s virginity. Or is that 10:57-11:11:09? 10:57-11:08?

You didn’t mention the Black Dick joke in liberty kids, there’s no way that show really meant for kids!

I'm surprised Tiny Toon's Babs Bunny "Me So Bunny" scene did not make this list... in less than 30 seconds she does impressions of Homey the Clown, A Madonna "Justify My Love" impression and 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny" reference

In Ninjago season 8 in game of Masks there was an adult and/or mature scene where harumi was trying to seduce Lloyd by stroking Lloyd's chest and looking at his chest too trying harder to manipulate him, how did a kid show like Ninjago manage to get away with that scene making it past the censors, THAT is the most hardcore scene to ever fly past over kid's heads, whereas adults will automatically see that kind of scene and make them feel really uncomfortable

My childhood Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, the original, were pot heads. Bugs was bisexual and ,as said then, a cross dresser. Being 50 years old, there was also TONS of racist depictions from cartoons far older than me. 30s 40s and 50s alot of them. Hell, half the star references in the cartoons we didn't know and back then couldn't Google to find out!🤦🏾‍♂️😆😆🤷🏾‍♂️

Didn’t care as a kid still don’t care as an adult. More things change the more they stay the same.

A vast majority of cartoons have more adult humor in them from time to time. Why? Because in many cases the show may be geared towards kids but parents are often stuck watching it with them. So they throw in a joke here and there for the parents that they expect the kids to miss or not understand.

If memory serves, the person who came up with the design for Grandpa Boris was Jewish and inspired by one of his own grandfathers, and said as much in response to the ADL's complaint.

I don't think the accident one is over kids heads I think it was meant to humanize kids who have had it rubbed in their face that they were an accident. I grew up knowing full well that my birth wasn't planned, my parents flew across the country my mother's suitcase had the birth control in it my mother's suitcase went to a different destination and she didn't get it for 3 days by the time it arrived I had been created, thankfully my parents had already been married for a few years and they were very happy for my arrival but nonetheless anytime flying was discussed or missing luggage was brought up on the news I was reminded that I was unplanned
