Tatum's hit on Stingley was tragic, but I will NEVER forget the hit he laid on Denver's Rick Upchurch that shattered Upchurch's facemask. Seeing pieces of that flying in air was truly incredible. Butkus is and will continue to be the hardest most ferocious hitter of all time. And no one, and I mean no one, is even close to his equal. I've seen LT, Deacon, Tatum, Willis, Harrison, Nitschke, Lambert, Lanier, and so on - None were as devastating when it comes to just plain laying the wood to another man. Sure you've seen injuries cause from hits by others on occurances but those were not with intent and malice. Butkus truly wanted to kill another man on the field.

Good List! Great to see The Waterboy Joh n Lynch on here! Some great suggestions too! A few from the past I didn't see mentioned were Deacon Jones, Mean Joe Green and Ted The Mad Stork Hendricks! One of the most vicious tackles I ever saw was by Steelers Robin Cole who picked up a guy by his head and body slammed him into the dirt! As far as hardest hits. I had old highlight video I can't remember who it was but they hit Fran Tarkenton so hard it look like he was hit by a bus! Never seen someone go from standing to flat on the ground so fast he laid there lifeless like he was dead!
Mid 2000s defenses were the pinnacle of Defenses. Every team had THAT GUY and the best team had THE GUYS. Sean Taylor, Ed reed, Champ Bailey, Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, Shawn Merriman, Charles Woodson, Cromartie, Polomalu, Warren Sapp, Strahan, Freeney, Jared Allen, J.Peppers, Dawkins, Ty Law Ronde Barber Some of the most iconic players in history are in the 2000s

RIP TO THE ASSASSIN JACK TATUM
I was waiting for Jack Tatum, and you got to him! A difference between Jack Tatum, and Lawrence Taylor - Jack Tatum never apologized or asked forgiveness, Lawrence Taylor, and one can see this on the movie, "The Blind Side," immediately felt regret by holding his helmet, one could tell that. Dick Butkus was good, yet Lawrence Taylor was one of the best overall players at his position. Pretty good list!

That was one hell of a good list
You forgot Wilber Marshall. The man was an absolute monster. It’s sad, people forget about the guy, but from 1984 to at least 1993, he was both dominant and feared by offensive players throughout the NFL His 1986 season was UNBELIEVABLEZ During the1986 season, he scored a 23 on the AV scale. The 8th highest in NFL History. Nobody remembers that! He scared the shit out of grown men. In 16 games during ‘86, he had 105 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 3 recovered fumbles, 5 interceptions, and a defensive touchdown. People talk about Singletary, Richard Dent and Dan Hampton, but they always forget about Marshall. Lions 1980s starting QB, Eric Hipple Gave an interview where he indicated QBs in that era feared Marshall more than any other player because his hits were so violent. Hipple said, “More than any other player, the QBs playing in that era were actually frightened of Marshall.” In fact, Marshall’s hit on Lions QB Joe Ferguson in the week 16 game of the 1985 season, could be the hardest hit of all time. Ferguson was out cold before he left his feet. The crazy thing is, Hipple was playing backup QB that day because he had a knee injury. Hipple was forced to play after Ferguson was knocked out cold. After entering the game, Marshall hit Hipple so hard he knocked his teeth out. Hipple left the game for a play and returned to finish the game. That’s a tough quarterback
@alton31ellis
Жыл бұрын
@nurserock77 I would tend to agree with you but so many of his biggest hits are illegal now- leading with the helmet, spearing, helmet to helmet, etc. The hit on Ferguson might have been a tick late or maybe it was just perfectly timed but either way it would draw a flag in today’s game. Right or wrong it was just such a monster pop that they’d call it excessive. The Pat Summerall “heavy hat” play on the 85 Rams receiver was awesome but DEF not legal in the game now.
@alton31ellis
Жыл бұрын
Sadly Marshall is also very broken down now. I don’t believe he is even capable of walking. He truly gave his body to the game. A game that wont take care of him now and didn’t pay him enough while playing. No excuse for the NFL not to cover all player medical bills for life. They have more than enough money to do it.

@@briandunmore6030 back then it was about ending your opponent’s career. Nobody was taught safety. Calling it stupid when that’s all he was taught is pretty ignorant. All I know is that he earned his spot up there and I would take a hit from Lott or Dawkins any day of the week over prime Tatum he had no mercy
