@@skybebop2870 as a batsman Ricky is better than dhoni. & also his captaincy is legendary. But MS is regarded as greatest cricket minds cuz he built a team from ground ( which ganguly establishing the seed). Ricky has won trophies with much more capable & dominating australian squad at that time. Obviously he was one of the greatest captains & batsman but Dhoni is builder or modern day Indian Cricket, Won all trophies with a new built team & also he is not top order batsman like Ricky. He is wicketkeeper batsman & played role in Finishing ( always). Cuz Ricky finished some game as Kohli does today bhut both of these batsman are not traditionally assigned to that role.

Oh you guys don't understand the pace bowlers back in the days. Most of the batsmen used to leave the crese retired hurt or with stumps in the air. To name a few Greenidge, Holding, Marshall, Sir. Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Vaas, Olonka, Ambrose, Walsh, Lillee, Donald, Pollock, Srinath, McGrath, Brett Lee etc..etc.. Everyone who know cricket knows deep inside these were the best to name a few. It's not that the new ones are not great, but they were just soooo damn good.

There are many more test matches per year now and the game has been transformed by the introduction of helmets. Balls bowled aiming at the head can now be hit by a ball travelling at 80-100 mph when the danger of serious head-injury before was not something to risk. Also the use of much heavier bats makes it easier to hit boundaries which score 4 or 6.

Arguably, today's generation players are more skillful because today we have 3 different forms of the game. A player as to adjust himself in T20, ODI and Test. Where as during those times there was only Test Cricket. But still, all these are the legends of the game. What cricket is today, is because of them.

This is an excellent list. Don Bradman played on arguably more lively pitches(i.e. more bounce and swing) since much less cricket was played in those days, and they didn't trim the grass. Also, there were outstanding and quick fast bowlers in his time, although the technology to measure speed needed to be more accurate and the camera technology required to be up to scratch. The bats in that era were nothing compared to modern bats, either. Then he also made runs quicker than the batters of his time and averaged the double of most great players in his time and since. In terms of facing the most hostile bowling, batters like Sunil Gavaskar, Javed Miandad and Viv Richards probably faced the most hostile bowling of all(the 70s-80s). Though Don would have aced any conditions and bowling attack. On the difference in playing conditions, some players question Dhyanchand (who is considered the greatest hockey player by Indians), that his records wouldn't be what it is today because he played on grass which was a lot slower than today's astroturf, which enabled him to dribble the ball a lot more. But that is a different sport, and I don't want to get into that debate either.

Cricket fast bowlers had achieved high speeds very early in the development of the game. Some of the bowlers that Bradman faced would be quite competitive with modern fast bowlers speed wise and would easily match them for speed if given access to the latest equipment and training techniques. Harold Larewood particularly was noted for his fearsome pace at the time. The fastest bowler of all time retired over 30 years ago- Jeff Thomson of Australia- he regularly broke the 100mph barrier in the 1970’s and was still playing for Australia at the end of the 1980’s.

This is injustice to the great wall Dravid .. Don , Sachin , Richards , Lara , Hobbs , Sanga , Ponting , Kallis , Dravid & Gavaskar

Dhoni has some abilities for which there is no metric or Objective rating mechanism, e.g. How do you measure the ability to use brain, strategy and planning? Remember in 2007 T20 final with Pak, he sat right behind the stumps to guide the bowlers. There is sadly no mechanism for measuring these but the viewers know what sets him apart.

I agree as the list is pretty accurate. These batsmen were the best coz they were batting against the best bowlers the cricket world has ever created. I'm 32 and I loved to watch and play cricket back in the days. Lost interest in watching by the late first decade of this century as they started mixing it with the so called stars and dolls of Bollywood whom you can't even call actors or actresses. They just failed terribly in making a classy old, beautiful art of a gentleman's game better. They shouldn't have even tried, I mean come on who can paint or make Mona Lisa look better. Even though there are still countries like England, Australia, New Zealand to name a few who still tries to keep it original. As an Indian, team India is not bad but lost its character I will say. I am sorry maybe it's my vintage eye perspective makes my eyes cloudy to fully see and understand what is happening now, I don't know. And, Please don't say anything about MJ in Basketball and MJ in Music as they are, were and will stay the best. It's like asking which bible is good while praying or as a wise man once said,'nothing' when he was asked 'does bacon has two styles? Because, at the end, smoked or fried or thick cut or sun-dried or whatever it's, Bacon is supposed to stay crispy while eating. Anyways yours show is fun to watch even if you guys fully don't understand what you are reacting to, which is not your problem at all. Love from NY and a proud Malayalam man. Keep up the fun touch.

Since you mentioned Dhoni time and again.. He'd not make it to the list of great batsmen cause he was extremely unorthodox and unusual from the technicality of most cricket shots. However, he made full use of his own technique and posed a threat. What makes Dhoni great is the position & situation he comes in to bat. He usually walks in at no.5 or no.6 when the game's nicely poised and takes it deep (thus the greatest finisher). He's a master at handling pressure situations and a phenomenal leader. Who knows .. had he batted a slot higher during his days he'd have made it to the list of great batsman (guy average over 50 in ODIs batting lower and amassed close to 11000 runs which is no joke!).

Pretty good list, but unfortunate that Dravid didn't make the cut. Dhoni is the greatest captain in my list, but he wouldn't get a place in even top 20 greatest batters. Also, this was a list of retired cricketers as they went by overall statistics. Kohli, and even Smith might deserve places in the top 10 if you consider the current players.
