Should have included the 1969 Kansas City Chiefs stuffing Joe Namath and the Jets in the playoffs. A goal line stand later in the game holding them to a field goal in a low scoring game, on their way to a 13-6 win and eventually winning the Superbowl behind an all time great defense.

What people forget or don't know is that San Francisco's defense was even more dominant than their offense. They were #1 in the league in '81 and '84. In fact - in the 1984 playoffs the D gave up 1 TD. Just one. In Montana's last 3 NFCCs the Niner D gave up a TOTAL of 6 points - an average of 2 per game. So all Joe & Co. needed was to average a FG to win 3 NFC Championships. In Montana's nine full seasons in San Fran his D was Top five all 9 years. The Niners defense was #1 in the league in '81 and '84. In fact - in the 1984 playoffs the D gave up 1 TD. Just one. Unbelievable. In the 1988 playoffs the San Francisco defense gave up ZERO touchdowns. Even more unbelievable. In the 1989 playoffs they gave up 1 garbage time TD to the Vikings when the score was 41-6 and one garbage time TD to the Broncos when the score was 41-3. So in those 3 Super Bowl runs the 49ers defense gave up one meaningful TD. Incredible.

In 1989, part of that was the offense though: 1989 49ers time of possession: 39:48 to 20:12 29 first downs (to only 9) 44 rushes for 179 yards 31 passes for 268 yards But yeah, that was one of the best overall teams ever. The other two NFCC games were more balanced in time of possession. In 1984 the 49ers actually lost the time of possession battle but still shut out the Bears. However, they ran 10 more plays.

One that should be high on the list occurred on Monday night between Washington and Dallas back in 1978 when their rivalry was at its most intense level. The teams were playing for the division lead. The teams had the league's #1 and #2 offenses but the defenses played at a seemingly superhuman level keeping the final score down to 9-5. Don't let the low score fool you; this game had as much thrills and drama as any game could possibly have. In the 3rd quarter with Washington up 6-0, Dallas had the ball (after a 5 yard offsides penalty) for a 1st and 5 at the Washington 7 yard line. On first down, Tony Dorsett ran it for two yards. On second down, Robert Newhouse ran it for two yards. On third down, Tony Dorsett picked up one yard for a first down at the two. On first down, Dallas completed a short pass to Preston Pearson in the right flats and was tackled at the one. On second down, Tony Dorsett ran it and was met in the hole at the line of scrimmage by Harold McClinton for no gain. On third down, Dallas tried running it with Dorsett again and Harold McClinton jumped into the hole stopping Dorsett for a 1 yard loss. On 4th down, Dallas simply settled for a field goal to cut the lead to 6-3. All told, Dallas, with the league's #1 offense, had 7 plays inside the seven and 4 plays inside the two, and only managed a field goal.

I’d like to have seen Super Bowl 21’s Goal-line stand. I know the Broncos didn’t go for it on 4th Down, but they were about to go up 17-7, and ended up getting zilch. On 4th down, their kicker missed the shortest FG attempting SB history. Another Giant favorite of mine was week 3 of the 2007 season against the Redskins. We were about to go 0-3 and held them from tying the score on 4 plays. Without that, we probably don’t win the SB in either that season or 2011.

SterlingArcher85 - That’s what I was thinking when I first saw this episode live, but remember the Jets kicked the field goal on 4th down. So it’s exempt from this list. They mentioned it on Best of the Rest though, so that’s pretty cool. King Of Random - It’s still part of the NFL dude. And a well known goal line stand by people who actually care about the history of the sport. Also the list had the Greatest Game Ever Played from 1958 at number 7, and the 1966 NFL Championship Game at number 2, so pointing out the year would make even less sense. Tom Brady Shady #CheatSquad#KissMeLikeMySon#WOAT - I can’t speak for SterlingArcher personally, but age doesn’t have much to do with it. I’m 19 years old and was wondering the same thing. You don’t have to have lived through history to show an interest in history.

  • @thelovebat

@Harry Engel It went three downs but forced the Jets to kick a field goal in a game the Chiefs narrowly won in a defensive struggle, en route to winning Superbowl 4. It was definitely a difficult goal line stand being in the playoffs and going against a highly touted QB Joe Namath who had just won the Superbowl the season before.

Which... turned out to be Steelers and Broncos again!
