I just checked out Little Odessa on Tubi, and I was completely blown away! What an emotional and tragic film! I definitely noticed the street scenes, and thanks to your commentary, it put the element of isolation into context. James Gray did a great job with this one. Tim Roth's performance was unbelievable, very stoic and commanding, and you could really feel the bond the two brothers had, even within the constraints of the overall runtime. Thanks for the recommendation!

I am so glad you tracked it down! It is a great little film that not many people discuss. Very powerful. I agree with all your sentiments on the film, and especially loved the tacit bond between the two brothers. Having a little brother myself made the ending that much more emotional. Great film that I'm glad I watched before making this list! Thanks for watching, and for sharing your thoughts, Jeremy!

This means a lot to me, as these are the types of vids I REALLY love creating. More creativity goes into these than the "Thriftin'" videos, although I do enjoy the relative ease of producing said thrifting videos. Very little editing, haha! Thanks for the continued support, my friend!

:) Thanks for the video! Great picks. I forget what I used to write before listing my favorites… something like, “in no particular order, _may_ be more than 10 titles.” I usually landed at around 10… 30-40 films. The Shawshank Redemption (Andy “doo-frane”), To Live, Three Colors: Red (and White), Ed Wood (it _is_ Burton’s best), Léon: The Professional, Pulp Fiction, Heavenly Creatures, The Crow, Drunken Master II (AKA The Legend of Drunken Master), Exotica, Fresh, Killing Zoe, Interview with the Vampire, True Lies, Chungking Express, Clerks, Pom Poko, Shallow Grave, Fist of Legend, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, The Hudsucker Proxy, In the Mouth of Madness, and Speed. Were any of these “murdered darlings” or possibly films you haven’t seen? Cheers, and please don’t let it be a year before the 1995 video! :’(

Thank you for the kind words, my friend. I still have to see those Three Colors films. I know they are some of your favorites. Glad to see I'm not alone with Ed Wood--what a magnificent film. Heavenly Creatures is a really underrated, effective film. A forgotten film by a HUGE director. Exotica I watched in preparation for this video, and it really flipped my wig. I love how the film leads the audience in directions that we should be ashamed of (or at least I was). It's a dry, mundane film that broods over you the entire run-time with its dream-like nature, which is hard to shake after the credits roll. However, it failed to cut the list. If it was not for nostalgia, it may have made the honorable mentions. Really intriguing picture. I am uber-nostalgic for Killing Zoe! I remember finding it after seeing Avery's name on the writing credits for Pulp Fiction. Cross that with the fact it was a heist film and I was in. Really enjoy it to this day, and I'm glad you mentioned it. Pom Poko, yes... All I know about it is that it features tanuki baring sizable ball-sacs. New Nightmare is excellent, and just missed the cut. Here, Wes really laid the groundwork for Scream, and I'm surprised more people don't talk about that fact. The Hudsucker Proxy I watched in preparation for this video, and really enjoyed it. Another solid Coen Brothers movie. And Tim Robbins always lights up the screen. Fun, absurd, and intelligent movie. As always, thanks for sharing--so many great films. Take care, my friend! PS: I've already started "research" for 1995!

@@theboredcyborg Sure thing. :) To briefly(-ish) reply: The Three Colors trilogy is worth pushing up the watchlist. They’re not “homework/chore” type films, if ya know what I mean. Ed Wood seems to only get more love with time, and I could probably write a mini-novel just listing its many superb moments. Heavenly Creatures - agreed. And maybe… _perhaps_ said director should have returned to smaller/medium budget films… Exotica, I agree completely and am glad you had such an experience watching it. When you get around to the 1997 list, you _must_ watch Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter during preparation. Trust me. That’s how I found Killing Zoe. There may have been a “from the creators of Pulp Fiction” sticker on the VHS box, but it was around the time I started taking more note of other crew members, not just “The Director.” Also - Julie Delpy from the Before trilogy and the Three Colors trilogy. Pom Poko - haha, that’d be the one. Probably Ghibli’s weirdest film, but still immensely watchable. I think New Nightmare is another one that has been reappraised a few times. Give it a few more years… The Hudsucker Proxy was not too popular or well received at the time, I believe. Another one that has aged well. Just pure screwball fun. Bruce Campbell has several amusing stories from the set in his (first) book. 1994 was a good year for Tim Robbins, maybe not Box Office-wise… Thanks for the video and reminding me of several other titles that nearly made my list (*joke about every 1994 film being included on my list here*). Ahh, research! Good to hear! I’ll just say… Before Sunrise and City of Lost Children.

We agree! Amazing year. Forrest Gump is great, but it's been so long, and I did not have time to rewatch it. I'm confident it would not have replaced any on my list, hence why I didn't place it, but it is great. Thanks for the kind words, Al! Plenty more to come.

The best movie from 1994 to me has to be Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman, and it just so happens to be my top five favourite movie. It's directed by Robert Benton, and to me, it's such a warm, fun and in some ways relatable movie. Newman plays a middle aged man who has made a lot of mistakes and is past his prime as far as being "the life of the party," but yet refuses to grow up and settle down in any meaningful way. It changes for the better in a really beautiful way, but that's why you gotta see it! It has a really diverse cast, including Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and even Jessica Tandy (in her final role). Paul Newman is known for so many films, but this is by far his best to me. He plays a broken-down, yet stubborn man really well, and his vulnerability in this role is really charming. I think the reason why I relate to the film itself so much is because the diversity of the cast of characters, Newman included, reminds me so much of a lot of people in my own small town, and how even though they're lives have been difficult, they always try their best and give their best to others. I always describe this movie as a warm coat that you can take out of the closet years later and it still fits and is comfortable. Thanks for the video Mike, and for giving me the opportunity to share my love for Nobody's Fool!

Cemetery Man is a film I've seen one time, and it failed to leave much of an impression on me. No idea why. I do, however, feel it is one that I will really enjoy on the next go round. I regret not rewatching it for this top 10. Oh, well--there is only so much time. You have got me excited about rewatching it, so maybe I'll do that soon. Clerks, I love, but have also only seen it once, maybe 15+ years ago. I've got some rewatching to do! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for watching, my friend!

So glad to get another top 10, and yours are some of the most unique out there. Love seeing both Jackie Chan and Jet Li make the cut. Oh, and Fresh! Powerful, amazing movie! My own top 10: 1. Forrest Gump 2. The Lion King 3. Pulp Fiction 4. Crooklyn 5. Hoop Dreams 6. Leon: The Professional 7. Natural Born Killers 8. Shawshank Redemption 9. Ed Wood 10. The Crow HM: Fresh, True Lies, Blankman, Above the Rim, It's Pat

Thank you for the kind words, Dell! The Lion King is one I'm sure would have cut the list on a rewatch, but I only had so much time for rewatches amidst all the "new to me" films I was intrigued by. Crooklyn is a Spike film I've yet to see. I have it in a Spike Lee Collection on DVD, and I know it's one that is going to rock me, just based on what I know about it. And there's something about Delroy Lindo in a fatherly role like that... I'm looking forward to it. Hoop Dreams is a doc I have not seen, and have never seen it out in the wild. I'll keep that one in mind... Natural Born Killers: Another I think would replace something on my current list. Again, no time to rewatch, as I have not seen it in ages. I used to LOVE it as a younger fellow. Especially Rodney Dangerfield's manic, abusive, and terrifying performance as the fanatical father. And, The Crow: For me a beautiful movie, with a moving story that never quite exceeds a solid 3.5/5 for me. The atmosphere is palpable; unmatched, but there is something about the pacing, structure, and characters (save for Draven) that leave me feeling a tad underwhelmed. Still, it's a film I go back to time and time again, and always will. RIP Brandon Lee. Blankman! I loved Blankman as a kid, haha! Above the Rim: another powerful flick I failed to rewatch. I remember Tupac's performance standing out to me--he was a very good actor. I'm one of the few that prefer his acting to his music. I was always more a Biggie/Pun/ guy, haha. And, True Lies, a film I loved as a kid (I played the SNES game incessantly), but have failed to fall in love with as an adult. I feel it's misguided and convoluted at points. I like it, but don't love it. This could always change, of course--that's the beauty of rewatches. By the way, have we gotten a god-damned blu-ray release yet? I hear Cameron is working on The Abyss, but I feel like he has said that about True Lies time and time again... Anyway, thanks for sharing your unique list; I always enjoy them! Take it easy, Dell!

I have not seen Legend of the Red Dragon! It's in the collection, though. Can't go wrong with a Wong Jing actioner. I do really like The Crow, but it never reaches greatness in my view. It's a me problem, I think. And, NBK is one I really wanted to rewatch for this video, but failed to find the time. Oh, well. It is a GREAT flick, though. And Rodney Dangerfield is... terrifying.
