    A lot of these aren't cliches. Magic is a staple to fantasy so you can't really say spells are a cliche. It would be saying pistols are a cliche in an action movie.

    WolfsCreed397 That would be all movies, books, ect. then since you need certain elements to make a movie what it is. Mobster movies needs the Mafia, Yakuza, or anything similar to those groups, Sci-Fi needs advance technology, Drama needs... drama, ect. Certain things are needed to make a movie what it is, they cannot be a cliche. Although I do agree that Fantasy really likes reusing a lot of the same story mechanics. Which is the other half of the list.

    How the fuck is magic a "cliche" ? It's just a part of the fantasy genre. Or "different races" if you said elves and dwarves are a cliche I'd agree, but there's a lot of unique or strange creatures in various fantasy stuff, that doesn't make it a cliche... #8, #7, #6, #5 aren't cliches, they are tropes, building blocks of a story. If you said "sword that must be pulled from a stone" or "can only be used by the pure of heart" now THOSE are magic item cliches. The other entries do fit the description of a cliche.

    DrowningJoy I think that depends. Some of them, such as magic, mythical creatures or fictional humanoids are just regular tropes commonly used by nearly everyone as a means to tell a fantasy story. However, others, such as the Prophecy(TM) or the Chosen One, are not only unnecessary to tell a good story by now, but also overused to the point of being corny unless done exceptionally well or and/or being approached from a new angle.

    The witch in Sleeping Beauty isn't bad. Same with Snow White, where the witch had to uglify herself to give Snowy the apple. Kind of idiotic, since the witch's whole rage was sparked by Snow White being fairer than she. - All the bad girls in James Bond movies are hot. - The cast of Game of Thrones is attractive, and no one is good. - The old wizards are never attractive, but are good. - Draco Malfoy seems to be an attractive kid. Tom Riddle, before he was Voldemort, didn't seem to be ugly.

    Do you know what a cliche is? Definitions: a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. a very predictable or unoriginal thing or person. a stereotype or electrotype. There is a huge difference between calling something a cliche bs an element of a genre. It is like saying "drinking blood is a cliche of a vampire story" "space travel is a cliche of science fiction" or "human characters are a cliche of crime dramas"

    Fucking seriously. Magic, different races in fantasy? Just like futuristic technology in sci-fi? Christ. Take those away and you have something less interesting. The ones I thought of before they mentioned it is just this static "good vs. evil, dark lord, blah blah" shit that you see in everything. Paradise Lost gets it right. Satan is the "hero" of the story, and God is the enemy. This was written in the 1600s, mind you. John Milton poured his life into that work.

  • @HeidLander

    @HeidLander

    8 жыл бұрын

    +jagarcia0705 In this case I'd say a trope is an aspect of a genre that is so common as to help define it. A cliche is a trope that is over-used to the point of becoming meaningless or uselessly repetitive. While all off the items in this video can easily become cliches, they are important enough in defining the fantasy genre that without any of them I think defining a game as fantasy would be questionable.

    Now do a Martial Arts movie cliche list my top 10 in no particular order 10. The Blind Master: come on whats more bad ass than a wize fighter, but the blind one who can kick your ass with out seeing...like Zatoichi, the Blind Samurai 9. Samurai Silhouette: This is when two fighters are behind the paper wall of the dojo and all you see is their forms doing battle, which is obscured by the blood splatter on the paper walls 8. Sword cuts bullet cliche: always bad ass looking 7. Animal called combat! Behold I am the master of the Mantis! You're cannot touch my tiger! 6. Chi blast: not used that much in live action, but you see it in anime and video games alot. HADOU KEN! 5. One vs many: One show that your warrior is bad ass, have him face off an entire class of rivals all by himself or against an entire army. 4. East meets West: take two bad asses from different nations and have them team up against the bad guys. Bonus points if its a chinese dude becoming allies and friends with the black Dude 3. Fish out of water: Take the martial artist how of their home town and put them in another country. Jackie chan and Jet Li did this all the time in the 1990s. 2. The Tournament: Weather its for money, revenge, self respect and pride or to save the earth from invasion The tournament is a great way to bring multiple styles to the table. Bonus points of the tournament is being held by the bad guys 1. The Elements: One of have the fight look even more bad ass and climatic, have the duel take place in the rain, or on a snowy feild or in burning temple or in a ring of fire. Bonus points if the fight uses two of them...like a ring of fire while its raining! what you guys think?

    You can find these tropes in fantasy novels as well. My favorite cliche is elves. I can't get enough of elves, or Dragons for that matter. Most of my books have elves in them, and I am currently working on a novelette with Dragons.

    ***** a good way to deal with social problems is to shed light on them. An author or a film director may hate some social injustices and in order to spread awareness, they can show how harsh it is through their works and make us the readers, see the injustices without really experiencing them. Wether J.K. rowling was intentionally discriminating the muggles, and the fantasy races is up for speculation, but the readers are aware of it in the books, and can gain insight of the wrongful social kinda injustices.

  • @terrorcop101
    @terrorcop1017 жыл бұрын

    One thing you left out is Fantasy's obsession with the Medieval Era. For the most part, even movies that technically take place in the modern age tend to lean towards medieval elements, including swords and castles; what's more is the fact that modern fantasy usually has the wizards and everything hiding either in plain sight or in the shadows. Traditionally, the only exceptions to this have usually been sword and sandal movies that take place in the Classical Era. You'd think that by now, movie-makers would try for a different setting like the Gunpowder or Industrial Eras, or at least creating a modern world where magic and monsters didn't have to hide.

The dark lord will always creep us out if he is portrayed right as the chosen will always make us cheer. It is like the old formula "Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. But boy gets girl in the end" for romcoms. It is not what is being told but how well it is being told.

    Not one of WatchMojo's best. Some of these cliche's have a really weak basis: British Accents: It's fair to point out that most of the greatest fantasy stories are of British origin. And then some is strictly happenstance: Labyrinth was one example, except that Bowie is British...that's his voice. Monty Python was another example...all British. Not a cliche. Magic Spells & Magical Items: Really? Not a cliche, rather a central core aspect of many fantasy novels. Ever since Tolkein, magic is an essential part of the story. One example even picks on Harry Potter...the whole point of the movie is that they can create magic. Magical Items, on the other hand, has been the traditional way those who don't have magical abilities can get access to magic. Different Races / Mythical Creatures: Again, an essential core feature of fantasy stories (it's called fantasy for a reason). Not a cliche. Furthermore, I find it amusing that different races and mythical creatures are two separate so-called cliches in this list...aren't they related? Wise old Wizard: That's why he's called a Wizard. You scratched at an actual cliche in that segment though...Wizards having beards. Or is that going to be in a different follow-up list? And don't get me started on the honorable mentions.

    I'll add the haunted forests to the objections, it's a classic fairy tale plot device, based on the fear of the unknown, one of the most basic human fears, totally valid literary reference. I think your summation - it's called fantasy for a reason, encompasses the rest of the issues.

    Rachael Switalski I stewed and festered about that one. It tends to be a bit like an easy fallback in fantasy stories. So I guess I can see the point in calling it a cliche. Then again, if you're talking about a world where the forest is unknown...maybe it's not really enchanged, it's just perceived as enchanted. It's a simple case of the unknown. So I guess that's a fair point. Certainly not a cliche.

    The British accent is the default accent for movies in English. American is anachronistic for any movie set more than a few hundred years ago. Then they forget that most of these writers are British, and the filmmakers are often not from the Western Hemisphere. Pretty much anyone not from the Western Hemisphere who learns English is taught British English.
