Aerosmith's Janie's Got A Gun. The censors took out the line about Janie shooting her stepfather in the head. Steven Tyler was pissed. What was ironic about it was the tons of songs played in the late 1980s about males using guns. No, but censor the girl using the gun, even though the men using guns in music was often gratuitous, while the girl in Janie's Got A Gun sent a potent message.

Are they including self censored? It has long been common practice to have an album version and a 45 edited for pop radio. Early on the editing was to make songs shorter and remove any lengthy instrumentals that station managers feared would get listeners to flip to someone else. In time it also way to remove obscenities and offensive references. This seems not to be the case as the alterations seem to be changes made to the approved broadcast version.

One song that comes to mind almost immediately is "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship. The album version - which the FM Rock stations played back in the day - had a line about oral sex somewhere in the middle of the song. If you actively listen for it, you'll hear it as plain as day, but because the long version is, well... lengthy, most people had zoned out before it came up, me being one of them. Another classic is "Life in the Fast Lane" by Eagles, for the obvious "...we've been up and down this highway, haven't seen a goddamn thing..."

Way back in 1966-67 a Canadian band called the Royal Guardsmen recorded a series of singles based on Snoopy's imaginary encounters with the Red Baron in the Peanuts comic strip. The songs referred to "the bloody Red Baron". They became very popular in several countries including Australia, especially among children. In Australia at that time, the radio stations in different state capitals had different play lists and adhered to different standards of what they considered decency in what they broadcast. This meant that the radio stations in Sydney played the songs with the word "bloody" uncensored while the radio stations in Melbourne bleeped out the word. The result of this was that the children in Sydney sang about "the bloody Red Baron", but the children in Melbourne sang the word that they imagined was being bleeped out, so that parents were scandalised to hear their eight year olds singing about "the f***ing Red Baron".

Wow, I hadn’t realized how much I missed this. I can remember having the record and loving it. The controversy probably didn’t hit so bad in the US then because the word bloody doesn’t carry the same meaning. As someone into colors, bloody red just sounded descriptive of what he might look like. I’m definitely going to look this up!

"Hey, let's do a list about songs that were censored, but not bother mentioning why they were censored!" Who the f*ck do you have writing the scripts to your videos? I guess we have to google the lyrics ourselves if we want an explanation beyond "it's got a naughty word in it". And the reason that Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones was censored was because of _what_ exactly? Because it has... "racy lyrics"? Wow. I just love how thorough and insightful these explanations are. You guys just delve right down into those details, huh? I wonder what the reason the #1 song is gonna wind up being censored for... because the lyrics contain "stuff"?

There was some controversy with the Osmond Brothers (yeah, I couldn't believe it, either) song "Crazy Horses". The line "Smokin' up the sky" was believed to be referring to marijuana use (the Osmonds? REALLY???). In reality, the song was addressing the problem of air pollution. Another controversial song is "Hell Is For Children" by Pat Benatar. Some idiots out there actually believed Pat was advocating that childrens' souls be damned to Hell. Obviously they never heard the song or read the lyric sheet, otherwise they would know it shined a light on child abuse...

" Another part of the song goes she shaved her legs then he became a she. so many songs have alternative meanings.
